You should owe basically 0% to Malta if you do it right. Assuming you win enough to make it worthwhile, set up an offshore bank account abroad in a haven (not at home) and send your money there. This is legal in Malta and does not need to be declared. Then only bring in the minimum to live off to your Maltese bank account (capital that you transfer over will be taxed at some rate once over the personal exclusion limit). Or you can live off withdrawals from a Moneybookers card.

Capital gains, interest and dividends from stocks are also not taxable for Maltese residents assuming you have your account abroad. So this is probably the best country in the World for EU people to relocate to for tax reasons. This is ironic since the EU countries pay for most of the infrastructure here. For non-EU citizens it is ideal as well, except that they have suspended the permanent residency scheme for the time being.

I have an accountant to recommend if you are interested. He proved very helpful for me relocating here and charged a lot less than I expected. He has experience with many poker players, as well as other sorts of clients. He is quite knowledgeable and has extremely fair rates so it is worth getting professional advice instead of just from a poker forum. His name is Aldo Vassallo, Mobile: +356 99673108. For his email, put his whole name together, first then last, at onvol.net. Or else skype is vassallo.aldo.

First of all, all info I care about is tax on LIVE-winnings all over the world (Im a MTT-player that plays a lot of live-tours)

My situation:
I live in Sweden and its no pokertax on winnings in Europe but 30% on winnings outside Europe. However... if you live more than 6 months in another country you follow that country's rules. So for example, if I live in England for 6 month and then go to WSOP in Vegas and win the main event I dont have pay any taxes neither in England or Sweden becouse pokerwinnings are 100% taxfree in England no matter where you in the world you win.

My questions are...
1. Is it the same if I live in Malta? Noone can tell me to pay taxes on my huge live-win in Vegas just becouse I lived in Malta for 6 months?

2. According to what I've read in this thread I guess I would have to pay taxes on it if I put the money in a maltese bank-account becouse I remitt the money to Malta but if I put it on my Swedish bank-account I shouldnt have a problem and it would be 100% legal?

Be aware of that tax-people in both countries will know that I have made the win and do what they can to tax me!

If I get YES to all these questions you will probably see me in Malta in November/December! =)

Another question... WHY THE HELL would you like to have a maltese-bankaccount!? It seems that all that follows is tax-problems! The reason I ask is becouse after reading this thread it seems very popular to get it.
Get an offshore account and send most of your money there. The purpose for a Maltese bank account is because it is convenient when you live here. So I just keep enough in it for day to day things. Plus for the terms of permanent residency for non-EU citizens it is necessary to remit a fixed amount of money to a bank in Malta every year (around 10k euros). For EU citizens I don't see why you would need a local bank account unless you find it convenient. It is worth talking to an accountant when you get here though.

"Be aware of that tax-people in both countries will know that I have made the win and do what they can to tax me!"

You are giving the Malta tax authority WAY too much credit on this part.

Thanks in advance.
Dentists are very cheap here in Malta, at least compared to Canada. I think a cleaning costs around 20 euros and not much more to get a simple cavity filled. Most services are very cheap here. You can get a haircut for 5 euros and house cleaners for 7 euros per hour.

- As far as I understand we have to have an ID card to open a bank account.
2. What should we say to the bank when opening an account ab what we do etc. pretty sure we don't want to mention that we play poker?
3. What bank is best/easiest to open an account at?
4. Do we have to have a return flight already booked upon entering Malta? I have read different things on this and was hoping somebody could clear that up for us.

Any other info you think would be helpful would be great. Thanks a lot.
It took me a REALLY long time to get a bank account in Malta as a Canadian. They had to send a physical letter from Malta to my ex-home bank and then back again. This somehow got delayed and it was over 3 months before I got an HSBC account open. I listed my profession as Investor. I had to leave a 2k term deposit to get a visa debit card with a 1k limit (even though it cannot be used to borrow). So basically getting banking set up here is a hassle for non-EU residents. I wouldn't bother if you're only staying for 3 months (which is as long as non-EU can currently stay).

Yes I opened a bank account at HSBC without a Maltese ID card. I just needed a passport. But the letters back and forth took forever. It wasn't possible to bring a recommendation letter here with me either. HSBC needed to send away to request it by post. Not fast. They must have used sailboats. Maybe the other banks are less strict about bringing your own letter? I just trusted HSBC more.

1. Do you guys just remit your winnings in a Maltese bank account anyway or have an offshore bankaccount; so the money is never remitted here; so never taxable?!

2. Does any player here in Malta pay taxes on his winnings?!

3. Does anyone know how it works with the permanent residence scheme; where you pay about 4K euro's as minimum taxes?!

4. Or simply how do you guys handle taxes?!

Thank you very much for helping me out.
PR scheme is suspended. I doubt any poker players have paid tax to Malta. Most of the locals try to avoid it as well for stuff like rent (landlords here love cash). But you can get burned if you transfer much capital to a bank here. Talk to my accountant Aldo Vassallo he knows all the angles for poker players and he's a nice guy. It won't cost you much, way less than any lawyers. His contact info is above. Don't bother mentioning me, he doesn't charge enough to give me any kickbacks!

If you take a normal Melita contract you don't even need a passport, all you need is a 3 month deposit. A 24 month contract is a bit cheaper and I suppose you would need some form of ID for that. The other internet/phone/TV provider Go requires ID/passport and Visa card details + deposit. Vodaphone has a prepaid service which most pokerplayers use and it requires nothing at all.

Hi guys,

I am wanting to go to Malta for about 3 weeks around september 6- september 28), to primarily focus on playing the WCOOP's, and figuring out legal issues regarding getting my residency there. I've stayed at Malta before, and I really like the place... However, it's a lot more fun to have some roommates, than to grind alone, so I was wondering if anyone currently living there is up for another roommate for one month (and potentially more if I can figure out legal shizzle and we get along). Obviously I would be willing to pay rent.
I am mainly a cashgame player online, but I have recently started to focus more on playing mtt's. If you have interest/ any questions, feel free to send me a PM... I know I don't have many posts on this forum, so I'd be happy to share some more info.

See ya,
Complexion
