Hi all,

Couple of questions if someone that maybe a Brit(or anyone) in Malta could answer please.

I have read that there are currently no restrictions for us to enter and stay in Malta without a visa but I have also read that we must apply for residency if staying for longer than 3 months. Is this correct and are there no issues if do not have employment?

Would keeping only my Hungarian bank account(euro account) suffice or would I be getting charged too much withdrawing from ATM's? I have read it is difficult to open a Maltese account with a job. Although my gf will be working and have a Maltese account so doesn't seem to be a problem unless getting a resident card without a bank account is an issue?

I can google this but any info about live games in Malta? Any mix games/split pot games? I am guessing not.

I emailed Pokerstars to ask if players will be able to use their EU account currently and for the foreseeable future. Of course I got the response that they cannot know what will happen in the future but for now can play.
Any views on whether this will change or rumours about it?

Any info on any of the above appreciated.

Thanks

Oh one more thing. Any golfers around that play Royal Malta golf course? Looks hugely overpriced but as it's the only course in Malta not surprised. How would you rate the course? Looks quite short but i'd be more bothered about the condition of the greens and fairways. Especially when paying 60 euros a round or w/e it is.

You have to meet residency requirements in any EU country after a period of 3 months theoretically under freedom of movement rules. If no employment and no student, you'd have to apply as self-sufficient, provide health insurance, etc.

However, if you still have a place to call home in the UK and only plan to stay short-term, you should get away without any of the above. If the plan is to stay in the EU post Brexit, I'd get this sorted ASAP, the window is closing fast unless they'll have some special Commonwealth agreements in place.

You can apply for a ID card right away, but afaik its not necessary. It's necessary if u wanna have a car though or wanna register yourself with the electricity company. im employed here and it wasnt a problem at all.

banks in malta are terrible and opening an account without a job is pretty much impossible afaik. the service is terrible anyway and im happy with my german bank account. I can withdraw 2k/day without any fee. ask your bank if they charge anything.

Thanks guys.

Yes I would be looking at longer term so sounds like i'd be best to apply for residency as soon as possible. I guess proof of funds will be required but as gf who is EU will be employed there i'm guessing getting a joint visa with her maybe the best solution.

That's great you can get that ATM cash with no fees. I doubt very much my Hungarian bank is that accommodating. I think I will shop around for banks here that will be best for this purpose though.

Hi guys,

I came to Malta (I'm from Europe) to try to become a professional poker player and I'm getting close to succeed? Do you know what is the procedure to become pro over there?

Best regards,

What do you guys think of this thread? Got a lot of attention that's for sure.

Are the people there really that unfriendly? Doubt they are as unfriendly as some places in central/eastern Europe.

Is it really dirty and overcrowded? At first I thought was just some old git moaning but there seems to be quite a few posts in agreement with the OP ha. You guys agree with any of it?

As far as immigration goes, a GF is nobody to you. Need to married to be classified as a dependant, you'll have to do your application separately. It will however help to have a joint rental agreement with both your names on it.

Thanks yeah. I was thinking that if been with someone for 2 years then it would be a defacto partner and can make joint application. We have a joint rental agreement now but did not for 1st year living together so idk. And I guess we would do the same if got somewhere in Malta.

I guess best thing is to go there and live for a few months to see if want to stay longer term. Then worry about that stuff.

Got a None Maltese EU national friend with a none EU girlfriend and it was easy for them to get her a Visa to stay in Malta. They had to submit some proof of their relationship photos, flight tickets, FB and stuff like that.

Make sure that you get the correct application form, at first they got the one for Maltese nationals and it was way more comprehensive.

Good luck.

Hey me and a friend want to stay in Malta for a month to work on our business and play poker as well. Are the 2 casino's in the OP still good places to grind? Looking for cash games anywhere from 1/2 to 5/10.

I see Vodafone has rolled out 4G+ to a lot of Malta now. Anyone grind just on that? Speeds of up to 230mbps - and it's on gozo too. Makes me tempted to avoid the high-rent areas of st julians and sliema... very handy backup at least :P

Has anyone here moved from UK to Malta and got Residency, i want to stay for about 4/5 months and if anyone from the EU stays longer than 3 months then you have to apply for residency, any UK poker players had experience with this?

No need for residency card. You can stay as long as you want, no one cares.
