There are more common than I am just two. I'd say maybe every two months. It happened to me once when I was chipleader at a final table. The next day I got a mobile modem for my laptop.

I'd guess the power cuts happen only during the summer, correct me if Im wrong. But anyways we had 2 or 3 in the end july, before and after that - no problemos.

Ho! I'm going to be grinding with a mate in a house on gozo from mid november and the landlord has agreed to get broadband installed. I've been disappointed before in this situation and would like a backup so wonder can anybody confirm from personal experience that there is reliable 3g coverage in Munxar? What dongle should I buy and is it available in Luqa airport?
Also I'm half thinking of buying a place in Malta in the new year but I'll have to relocate my ladyfriend. She's a very presentable recruitment/sales type with a degree in theoretical physics, anyone have a recruiting/startup contact that may help?
Finally if anyone has had as rough an under EV night as i have you should hop a seaplane to Mgarr and boat to Comino and wallow in the blue lagoon rather than self pity for a few hours. That's what I'd be doing, there's one leaving at 9.30!

Hey guys

I sent out a few job applications and am waiting for ppl to get back to me. I am currently in university and am looking for a change. The things that I am studying are really hard and dont interest me a whole lot. Can you make a contract for just a year or so so I could still return to school? What kind of opportunities are there to get higher up in the companies if I were to leave school totally. I dont want to work as a customer service guy for the rest of my life.

Just got back from playing the EC Poker Tour in Malta and the place seemed pretty good. Spoke to one of two people who already had made the move from germany / holland.

I've contacted/ looked online at some real estate agents but just wanted to know a couple of things.

1. Roughly how much are people paying for a 2 bed apartment in Silema? I've seen some sick ones for like 900 euros and not sure if that's a little extravagant when a 700 euro one would do just fine. Do you haggle for the monthly price btw or is that price set in stone?

2. What are roughly costs each month on top of rent.. like electricity/water/interwebs/food? (exclude drink and going out). I was going to budget about 300-400 euros each month for this..?

3. How do people get about (if they live in silema/st julians)? I was getting cabs out there from valletta and everywhere really and it soon added up. Do you rent a car/ never go too far/ nothing to see so just walking distance/ bike? I'm predicting to be out there for min 6 months.

4. Easy to meet people out there? Do most poker players tend to get to know each other and not really know 'the locals'?

5. Casino's for live play... I've been to casino Venezia and it seemed cool but wanted to know if live cash games/ 200 euro< tournaments run frequently. (I've read Maltese people love to gamble and thus should be good on this front).

6. I've contacted betfair and they have told me that its illegal to play in Malta on their site. Somebody else mentioned this in the thread and others said this is fairly common but you can get onto it anyways. Can somebody clear this up.. can you get onto betfair or other sites that are ''illegal'' to play at in Malta?

7. PCs/ Monitors... did people get pc's shipped out there or buy montiors to add to thier laptop or something. I'm not really a fan of playing on laptops and wondered what set ups people use?

Thanks in advance!

edit: also is it pretty easy to get weed out there?

I have a quite spacious 1bedroom apartment in Sliema with seaview and im paying 650eu rent, really depends on what you want, id say; seaview, 2 bedrooms and luxury would cost you around 900 - No seaview, 2 bedrooms and crappy furniture around 600

2. What are roughly costs each month on top of rent.. like electricity/water/interwebs/food? (exclude drink and going out). I was going to budget about 300-400 euros each month for this..?

Water/electricity is around 100eu/month if you live alone and dont overuse it, i pay 80eu a month for tv/internet - for food depends, i dont or barely cook

3. How do people get about (if they live in silema/st julians)? I was getting cabs out there from valletta and everywhere really and it soon added up. Do you rent a car/ never go too far/ nothing to see so just walking distance/ bike? I'm predicting to be out there for min 6 months.

Busses and cabs basiclly - busses are as good as for free :P

4. Easy to meet people out there? Do most poker players tend to get to know each other and not really know 'the locals'?

Yeah really easy, everybody introduces pretty much everybody

5. Casino's for live play... I've been to casino Venezia and it seemed cool but wanted to know if live cash games/ 200 euro< tournaments run frequently. (I've read Maltese people love to gamble and thus should be good on this front).

You gotta love Portomaso, i hate livepoker but tables are fun over there, 400bb stacks=awesomeness

2 friends of mine who also moved here both were BF regs but couldnt play from here

I play on my laptop+26'' :P
Thanks in advance!

- You could definitely get something in that pricerange. WB shares a 3bedroom (1 converted into office) in Sliema, but this is around 2700eur. (water+elec is roughly 200 for ours), cabletv+internet(20mb)+phone 80eur. maid once a week around 50eur etc.

2. What are roughly costs each month on top of rent.. like electricity/water/interwebs/food? (exclude drink and going out). I was going to budget about 300-400 euros each month for this..?

Food - all depends on what/where you eat. Going out to restaurants is fairly cheap.

3. How do people get about (if they live in silema/st julians)? I was getting cabs out there from valletta and everywhere really and it soon added up. Do you rent a car/ never go too far/ nothing to see so just walking distance/ bike? I'm predicting to be out there for min 6 months.

Taxi, is around 8eur from sliema to st.julians/paceville. - use wembleys

Portomaso/Hilton Casino is the best imo. they run 1/1 games and up to 5/10

You just keep your old address on the account, there should be no problems logging in to these accounts.

7. PCs/ Monitors... did people get pc's shipped out there or buy montiors to add to thier laptop or something. I'm not really a fan of playing on laptops and wondered what set ups people use?

A 24" 1920x1200 is around 220€ here.

Thanks wonderboy (and others) for response, very very helpful.

I will be out there at the end of January and probably stay for at least 6 months... no doubt get the chance to meet quite a few of you.

One quicky is what do people do with withdrawing cash. I bank with Barclays bank in the UK and have a visa debt (don't use credit cards). How do people withdraw cash whilst out there. Obviously I could just use my debt card but the fees are going to be like 5% + charge no doubt. Do people just stump it up and pay it or is there some magical way around all this by setting up an account in Malta.

Also the £300/ 320Eu max a day is a joke as don't want to have to take out max every day lolz.

Thanks! (Good call on the sushi will definatly check it out)

Estilo started serving Sushi as well. Pretty ok. Open 24/7 and located in central Paceville.

But Zest must be the best place with sushi and to dine in Malta imo.

Sakura is pretty good stuff, ate there multiple times so far. Just don't expect good service cause when you have ordered they just bring the stuff and don't pay attention to you anymore.

I currently rent an appartment with 2 bedrooms foor 700, pretty spacious but I have a view to a concrete wall. I don't mind so to me it's ok. I have a 6 month contract and it's pretty common I've heard, and if you contact Matt from Dhalia or Michaela from re/max, they already bargain for you.

Haven't met many people though, I feel like most locals look down on foreigners. But fellow poker players are mostly relaxed and nice, haven't met one that I couldn't laugh with yet.

locals are pretty racist people tbh esp towards brothas

imo maltese people are really simple, dumb and slow in general, fe go to a small store - it prolly takes you 15mins to get a pack of cigs bought even if u had exact amount in your hands plus the service that you get in restaurants isn't the best out there, seems like they hate money

I always wondered why paying the bill in the restaurants takes more time then to order and get in the food over here.

hey guys chill chill,
locals are not racists over here , we just dont like the fact that we get invaded with illegal black immigrants here in malta espescially since we have a small population of 400,000.. otherwise malta is not racist espesically to foreigners who relocate here in Malta and generate a extra revenue for Malta.

again, the service you get in restaurants all depends on which restaurants you go to. im sure that if you go to dolce vita or peppinos or zest you do get a good service. for other common restaurants you have to understands that the wiaters that serve you, will be people that have no other options of working and get paid 3-4€ per hour..all depends on what restaurants you go to....

lauri ma man... maltese people are dumb haha..again depending on where you buy your cigarettes from, if you go to a shop thats falling to bits and is owned by a fat maltese old woman - she's probably just too old to communicate
