I can`t send you a pm but I`m also moving to Malta and want to share a flat so I`m interested in your post,add me on skype 'amillie65' to talk more.

Also if there`s anyone else searching for roommates or wanting to put together a poker house you can add me on skype as I`m also looking.
Thanks

Even with a "normal" job it's difficult, generally the ask you for one thing at the time, so everytime you go there it's another thing you got get before you can open an account.

My firend thought he had everything sorted after four visits but then he needed the signed lease after he came back with the Malta lease he was able to finallt open his account. Then he got to choose to have Visa sent by post or to pick it up at that BOV branch, he choose post because he would prefer never to them again.

That was a big misstake because the decided to mail his Visa card to Sweden akthough the last hurdle for opening the account was proof that he was living in Malta

While I don't dispute that this happened, it's not always a nightmare.

My friend recently came over, got a job, and opened a BOV bank account relatively painlessly. Although a contract of employment is needed...
HSBC used to be even easier, though I don't have recent experience of it.

But actually, you don't need one. Just do everything poker-wise by Skrill, and all other stuff you need to pay in Malta can be done with cash. No worries.

Compared to many others it was relatively painless for me too, 3-4 visits 4+ hours at the bank total with all documents in order and work contract. Only the basic stuff, internet banking, debit card and the account.

Also 1.5 years ago or thereabouts it was no problem opening a bank account here, now it is a bit more difficult. And the most annoying thing is that they don't tell you exactly what you need at once, if they need ABCD they tell you that they need A and when you come back with A they request B and so on.

Compared to last time did it in Sweden filled in the form waited two days for a certified letter and that was with a credit card with a 10K credit.

But for pokerplayers I doubt it is worth it and there are potentil tax liabilities if you go that route too, As Tim said there is really no need for it.

But if you do want to open an account above information is helpful to make the process less painful and manage expectations.

Good luck.

Just to sum it up because it's not clear to me. As a poker player from UE, is it possible for me to open a bank account in Malta if i do not work/study there?

If yes what more than these do I need to prepare:
- flat rent proof;
- my previous bank statement;
- id/passport??

What are the actual brackets for taxes? I've read, that till 8500 euro annually it is 0% tax.

GL surviving on that.

I can't tell you the brackets but afaik most poker players in Malta elude the income tax completely. You can use Skrill and pay your cost of living in cash or setup an offshore bank account.

yeah 8500 seems like flat+utilities+internet+phone for a year, for rest skrill etc.

No, but most hotels will have one and might allow you to use theirs.

Did that before when I had to print something and the first hotel I walked into helped me out

Ok so here is the story

Me and my 2 friends have decided to take the year off to live abroad and one of the options we consider where to go is Malta. It is our first time doing such thing and I was hoping maybe you guys could give us some advice to follow/suggest.Right now I am studying IT at our local university with the other friend but we both absolutely hate it and consider leaving it.

I was hoping maybe you guys could describe a little bit the local job market and how difficult it eventually will be for us to find job.I am afraid that finding job will be much harder than we expect in Malta. I have some ideas in gaming industry but nothing sure yet. Needless to say we are up to everything as long as the salary is relatively good. And also what should be the bare minimum budget for us even in the first place.

All three of us are comparatively young (20-21 years old)

try looking for some bilingual jobs in gaming industry if you speak any other than English.
something like customer support

Hmmmm....my advice?

Developers get paid a fortune - stay in school!

Failing that, look and see what types of developers are needed and study that independently. I'm forever wishing I was a developer....

Languages will get you a CS job on 18-20k a year. It's liveable, but nothing to wite home about.

You could always lie to the bank, and compose an offer of employment letter for yourself. Who knows if they check, they are most likely just ticking boxes on their application forms. None of my contracts are on headed paper these days.

Also, you could try www.banif.com.mt/ or APSbank.com , they're smaller but also offer personal banking. Who knows, maybe they are more lax. Especially as you require no credit related services.
