HSBC used to be even easier, though I don't have recent experience of it.
But actually, you don't need one. Just do everything poker-wise by Skrill, and all other stuff you need to pay in Malta can be done with cash. No worries.
Compared to many others it was relatively painless for me too, 3-4 visits 4+ hours at the bank total with all documents in order and work contract. Only the basic stuff, internet banking, debit card and the account.
Also 1.5 years ago or thereabouts it was no problem opening a bank account here, now it is a bit more difficult. And the most annoying thing is that they don't tell you exactly what you need at once, if they need ABCD they tell you that they need A and when you come back with A they request B and so on.
Compared to last time did it in Sweden filled in the form waited two days for a certified letter and that was with a credit card with a 10K credit.
But for pokerplayers I doubt it is worth it and there are potentil tax liabilities if you go that route too, As Tim said there is really no need for it.
But if you do want to open an account above information is helpful to make the process less painful and manage expectations.
Good luck.
