Im in Malta currently. Was looking at the poker schedules from the casinos online.
What's the best place to play at? With fish/tourists and stuff.
Most of the tournaments are rather low buy in, where should I look if I want to play 100€+ buy in

Yes, agreed with the above. I believe they have a 100+10 tournament on Fridays. This week Israel Poker Tour is in Casino Malta IIRC. A few higher buyin tourneys there.

Hey guys, i'm from Germany and i'm thinking about leaving it But i don't know where to go..

I heared Austria has the same politic as germany aswell, so Poker isn't tax-free(?!)

Now i was looking for Malta and i saw that a lot of guys wrote, that they don't care about paying taxes. (Why?)

Currently im earning like 5-10k a month in Pokerwinnings (online and live) and im not sure what to do. Would be great if someone could help me a bit.

Are there currently some mid-highstakes grinders who is living in malta/austria?

tons of people in malta and austria. austrian legislation in rgds to taxes is clearer and better. that being said nobody cares about 5-10k/month so doesnt really matter where u go as long as u arent in germany

well that's interesting. I was sure that taxes are unclear in Austria and somewhat straightforward in Malta :O

i elaborated on those ad absurdum.

Fedor Holz bought a place in Vienna during his peak and afaik has his residence in Austria. Tons of german HS MTTers have their residence in Austria and cash to their bank accounts in Austria. I have never spoken to a tax lawyer in Austria.

In Malta everybody you speak to will tell you something different and most will trying to do some sort of business with you where they help you to "avoid"/"reduce" taxes.
It's quite clear that you cannot be taxed on money you don't remit to Malta according to their laws so its fairly save to have a residence in Malta and spend 180days/year++ there while cashing out to offshore bank accounts (those shouldnt be in YOUR country).

I know tons of people in Austria and tons of people in Malta and I'm not aware that any of those are paying taxes on their poker winnings.

100% safety you only have in the UK, Austria probably has 95%, Malta 90%++ but Malta in reality nobody gives a **** anyways whatever you do...

If you want to have really sound information it always makes sense to speak to a tax advisor. Everything i said is personal opinion and not advice in any way

ok cool, thx for the above

This is more or less what I knew on the subject too. Although I spoke to tax advisers in the UK 2-3 years ago, who told me that you have to pay taxes as long as you play poker professionally (in that case it is considered as trading). Actually I heard this from more than one person. I know nobody pays taxes anywhere, but my point is that not even the bright and sunny UK provides 100% safety

Also fyi from this year on you gotta pay min 5k EUR taxes in Malta if you earned more than 35k globally.

Hi everyone,

I'm a french poker player, mainly specialized in MTTs and SNGs. I'm looking for one or more poker flatmates to rent a long term apartment in Malta or join you in your apartment if you 're looking for someone. I'm looking for something around 500 euros + bills (internet, electricity etc..) I can move in starting June.

I'm looking for serious, clean and respectful people. I'm a calm person, nightlife/nightclubs is not at all my thing. I'm more of a video games, TV shows/Movies and watching NBA type of guy. I want to change my bad habits and get into sports as much as I can. Eat healthy food etc.. I'm also looking forward to trying out some fantasy basketball when the new NBA season starts whilst in Malta

I think i've said it all, if you're interested please don't hesitated to leave a reply on send me a private message.

Sorry to bother u on this but RE austrian taxes do u know of anyone who has got an answer from the tax authorities on that? Lot of people thinks it's taxed and obviously that's not correct if authorities aren't going after Fedor and those guys.... They must have got some answer when you've got people like BencB changing residency from UK to Austria.

The UK attitude all stemmed from a fairly old case that found, due to the massive variance involved, that gambling cannot be regarded as a full-time occupation and was not subject to income tax. It's not exactly a rock-solid foundation, but precedent is quite important in the UK legal system so tax authorities have not been too fussed in challenging the decision.

It's a very weird and antiquated idea to not regard gambling winnings as "income" but there you have it!

Okay found something very interesting RE Austrian taxes and this may explain why the German players have moved there more recently.

In 2014 it was ruled poker was a game of chance by the constitutional court so as to require poker operators to require the same national licences that lottery providers need. Obviously this was done for practical reasons - much easier than drawing up entirely seperate legislation for a single game.

All winnings from games of chance in Austria are not subject to taxes.

Therefore poker is tax-free in austria.

The best bet is to reach out 3-4 and hope for a somewhat similar answer. Cannot imagine that nobody has ever done that, but obviously talking about taxes in a public forum not a normal things to do for ppl. That being said I'd be more than thankful (alongside with lots of others) to hear from someone who's already reached out for legal advise in this regards. Vienna would be an awesome city to live in if poker was tax free

Yea am looking out for some more confirmation. Might ask a few people on Rasieyouredge forum since there's a good few Germans on there that have probably moved.

Only started looking into it recently I had presumed it was taxed the whole time.
