It seems they got a rather good deal: 8k USD total currently is 265k THB. That`s a daily rate of 5,300 Baht.
A pretty nice 4br villa with sea views and no construction nearby in a good location (North East, within 15 minutes to Chaweng) starts at about 10k per day in the low season (October - Christmas is low season; with a monthly discount: about 180k/month+).
If you are talking about onsite staff you won`t find anything for less than 15k per day.
A really luxurious 4br+ villa with home cinema, gym and stuff like that starts at 20k per day. Probably 90% of them won`t be available for such a long time, because they are booked out well in advance.
You find similar and cheaper places in the South and on the West side of the island, but obv they are cheaper for a reason: location.
but seriously, 2k for 1.5ish months in high season when most poker players choose the worst possible way of renting doesnt seem that off, would doubt there is anything fishy going on, especially if the place is nice.
