Not going to find many poker players there. My thoughts about possibly living in SR:
- plus is it's cheap and because of nearby temples, you get a changing group of tourists all the time. you can eat/drink for cheap and will probably meet many people at bars/restaurants on pub street who are from Aussie, UK, Europe and US (quite a few Aussies since it's so close to there).
- minus is that otherwise it's generally boring. there aren't really many nearby cities, so the scene is very limited: pub street, temples, tourist markets, and lots of your typical cambodian stuff.
Personally, I like SR, because I just like hanging out and eating/drinking, talking with the tourists, etc. and it's cheap and safe there. PP is overwhelming and Snookville has sort of a sketchy rep. You'll blend in more in SR and they keep it safe, because so many tourists come there to see temples.

Def. don't need to fly into Cambo, usually much cheaper to fly into Bangkok. There is a bus station on the north end of Bangkok, has buses that go to the border city (I think < $10), so don't have to deal with Khao San Road scams. If you get there during the day, just hire a tuk tuk to take you to border. If you get there at night, hire tuk tuk to take you to motel a couple miles closer to the border (or maybe stay where they drop you off). Then the next day, there are trucks where you just climb in back and sit down, and they take you to border for a buck or two. It will be hotter than hell during the long wait at the border, where even a bribe might not induce them to open any windows or turn on any fans, no matter what the temp. Figure on a couple hours at the border. There are buses from the Cambo side of the border, but it's best to pool and have ~3 of you split a cab from the border to SR. IIRC, it's ~$20-25/person if 3 of you split a cab, and it's so much faster and more comfortable and sitting on a cramped bus and feeling every pothole, while the bus meanders behind carts pulled by water buffalo or w/e. The cabs will just weave in and out and make good time on the improved road they now have to SR. From SR, there are many places you can buy bus tix to PP, if that's your destination, incl. your hostel/hotel usually, but not sure what a cab costs to PP.
