Great to hear you are well & happy.
Good luck with your construction as never easy, an old mate from Cairns built himself a nice home there for 35k USD. Which I thought was unreal as end result was good. He lives in Cairns and visits regularly to see his Family.

Surprised you didn't marry yet or start family but as long as both happy that is main thing.
All the best keep safe win big as life way to short not to Enjoy.
I hope travel resumes soon but I highly doubt it.

The curfew was lifted a few days ago so life is returning to normal slowly. Bars, clubs, KTVS, etc are still closed so everything on the riverside is shut-ish. As usual about half the bars remain open with their lights off but if you walk around a lot of the girls are sitting outside waiving you over. As Secrets has a full scale restaurant inside, they are pretty much completely open. I know I've said this before, but I really do think things will start to fully reopen slowly. First should be the alcohol ban, then clubs/bars reopening should follow shortly thereafter. Naga shouldn't be too far behind that and then finally the travel restriction of $2K deposit upon entering. Once they start handing out visas on arrival again, we should be flooded with tourists. But perhaps I'm being too optimistic.

The Cambodian tourism ministry recently announced that fully vaccinated international tourists with proof of their inoculation could be allowed into Cambodia as soon as November 2021. To make travel more convenient, Cambodia is also considering lessening or the full removal of the 14-day quarantine policy for fully vaccinated tourists, barring certification showing a negative COVID test 72-hours before travel and another negative COVID test upon arrival at Phnom Penh International Airport.

Are there jobs for an English speaker in Cambodia?/what type of jobs? Is there a social services available to people who have a visa? Is it easy to keep renewing your visa?

Is there anyway to get a mortgage from a local bank as a foreigner?

PT can probably give you better info about these kind of things, but just a word of caution here, Cambodia is really a developing country and many things are not developed very well yet, such as the rule of law. Social services you can also forget about. English teacher positions are available AFAIK but not well-paid. You will earn more than the local average but that's not a lot, to put it mildly. Visa renewal is fairly easy in normal times if you have some contacts, ofc at the moment it is shut down mostly due to covid.
But what I really want to point out, you better think twice before getting a mortgage there, even if you could. Cambodia can be great if you play it in the right way, and I like that country very much, I am considering retiring there in the future. But some things you better stay away from, like owning too many things in that country. If some ruling party member does not like your face or whatever he can just take everything away from you and nobody will help you, least of all the local courts. So keep that in mind, it's not the US or Europe and there is more than one barang who lost everything there.

You really want to be able to work online making USD, actual jobs for foreigners are pretty limited and the pay is probably not gonna be good.

Basically no on both fronts. The job market for foreigners is contracting right now and has been for a while. Many people have returned to their home countries because of this and if it is your plan to come here and find work in order to survive, I would advise you to not come.

In regards to social services there are barely any for locals let alone foreigners. And once you arrive visas are easy to renew but this is assuming they start giving out visas on arrival again, which they have not as of yet.

Not as far as I know. There are some rights afforded to foreigners in regards to land and home purchases, but you will need a local acting agent for the most part.

Not sure if you are dead set on Cambodia, but teaching English in Vietnam is the way to go for native English speakers ; I am not a native speaker myself, but have no doubts that I would of found EASILY a decent paying job. GL

you need to embrace the flavored soju, it's fantastic, blueberry #1

none of that good for your weight loss prop though - alcohol has a scary amount of calories

i've done bike trips where i'm pedaling 6+ hours every day for a month and gained weight at the end of it because i was finishing off my evenings with beer and wine

strraight up drinking nothing but water will work wonders and is one of the easiest possible ways to drop weight just eliminating liquid calories

I know and appreciate the advice but the Korean that invites me is older and I cannot refuse. None of the Koreans will drink the flavored stuff. We keep it around for the token white guyLiving in Cambodia and turning Pro

very true indeed the koreans themselves seem to view the flavored stuff with suspicion, perhaps even something just for the females

but this token white guy loves that stuff

A 1 bedroom in my building goes for $1,200 per month, assuming it's available. But you don't have to spend as much and can still get something plenty nice in an area like BKK1. My condo before this was fine and it was only $600 for a 1 bedroom. If you go the apartment route and not go for a condo the price dips even more. The family and I had a 2 bedroom before I got my own place and that one went for only $450.

I think 6 months is a reasonable hope. There is talk of reducing the quarantine and deposit by half but I think it may go away altogether. Everyone keeps throwing the month November around so let's hope.

My mom used to say that I eat like someone was chasing me. Growing up poor and not always having a lot of food inspired that feeling. I haven't felt that way in a long time but still get glimpses of it when I see how my girlfriend orders and eats.

I'm considering going on a trip to a warm country and staying there for a month or two, maybe longer. Cambodia might be a good option. Looking at Phnom Penh's climate data the best time to go is between December and March, so that's good.

From what I've understood, one can stay in the country for 30 days with a tourist visa and these things can be renewed. But if I were to leave now I would still have to fork over $2k and spend two weeks in a quarantine hotel, right?

Tourists are finally allowed in again, and from now on it's "only" 1 week of quarantine and $ 1,000 (but you need to be vaccinated).

With tourist visa you can stay 30 days and renew 1 time for another 30 days as far as I know.
