I enjoyed your post a lot and think you have found yourself a pretty sweet set up. But if you haven't been out there a long time yet, you haven't talked to veterans a lot about the way things work, and so on... well you just need to be careful. Plenty of men get screwed over in the SE Asian countries on a regular basis and frankly I think you're exuding some blind confidence over your situation. This isn't a bad thing in itself: if you are enjoying yourself then don't stop. However, if you ever feel like you're being pressured into something you don't want to do, if you *ever* get a vibe that it is about the money or you're being used then it is already *wayyy* past that point.

Anyway these are just some general thoughts. Good post though and I appreciate you taking the time to write about your experience so far.

I spent a few days in s'ville in june of 2010. To me it seemed sketchy. I wasn't the biggest fan of it really. It was fun but I always was watching everything and everyone around me. I suppose I did that all across SE asia though.

I doubt I will go back when I take the gf to SE asia next summer.
Probably just Vietnam and Thailand.

That's okay. It's amazing to me that people who have never been are so adamant about not hearing the downsides to a country like Cambodia... but whatever.

I've travelled a lot in SE Asia (Thailand/Cambodia/Viet Nam/Laos).
I lived for a year in Cambodia from mid 2005-mid 2006. I spent most of my time in the capital Phnom Penh as a volunteer teaching English to street kids and low and unwaged Cambodians.
I went to Sihanoukville for about 3 weeks and it was more of a town than a city at that point, I guess it's grown a lot.
I thought it was a nice place and think that living/grinding there could be a good lifestyle.
Cambodia is poor and corrupt sure but I didn't drink/take drugs or do the hedonistic backpacker lifestyle and I would say it's a hell of a lot safer than any western countries in regard to crime if you live simply and don't go to the seedier areas.
In regards to sex tourism, I thought Cambodia was probably worse than Thailand. I saw westerners with really young Cambodian boys when I was in Sihanoukville. I mean these kids might have 10 years old and they would openly proposition you when you're walking down the beach! I hope they've cleaned that up.

1. I've been all over SE Asia. Cambodia is safeish for the most part, the main problem being is if you have a problem its likely to be a big problem. If you get into a scrape with a local its not going to end well for you. Unfortunately most westerners mouths get them into trouble a lot of the time as they don't understand what raising your voice etc can do for you in this part of the world.

2. If your talking about sheer quantity of sex tourism, Thailand wins hands down and its not even close. I do however concede that what goes on in Cambodia is of the worse variety, forced prostitution, underage etc. There has been a big crack down in recent years but its still around, in fact the local prostitution market is way bigger than the tourist one, the same goes for Thailand too but most don't realise that.

Yeah, you overreacted. Did you recently move back to the states? Seems like you have a bit of culture shock...it's quite common...

Hey Iao, I'm in Sihanoukville with 2 other poker players right now. It definitely feels cheaper than Chiang Mai (which is already the cheapest place I've ever lived). We're on Serendipty beach, which is touristy/backpackers but with 50c beers all day long.

The town is small, and I'm not yet sure if its year-round livable, but I could easily spend 2-3 months here happily.

lol level? i was actually wondering about normal chics. i've just heard that most hookers there are underage and that's pretty sick (in a bad way).

rainseason is horrible but make it a 5 month stay home grind and its ok.

Its way cheaper then Thailand thats for sure and way more authentic and beatyfull.

Altough yu will find underage girls if you are looking for them its simply not true that most are underage thats a real minority but yes the problem is precent.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia questions:

Are there ATMs available in Phnom Penh that dispense american dollars? I will be staying at the Red Fox Inn and going to Nagaworld pretty much every evening if that helps with finding an ATM location.

I am hoping they have them at Nagaworld at a minimum, but I am not sure, hence the question.

Also, any tips getting from the Airport to the Red Fox Inn in Phnom Penh? Are the metered taxis fair and safe?

As for taxi yes they do have metered taxi's those are safe and fair.

Slifdog, A Tuk-Tuk to the city centre from the airport is $8, if you PM I can give you number of a driver who speaks great English and will pick you up and help you around town on your visit.
