Yazzx's family was in town for one more night, so the boys ended up taking out his little brother and hit up a few bars. I joined them after getting off of work around 3:00 AM but couldn't get too crazy as Yazzx brought his Mrs and she knows my girlfriend. As the bars were closing down, everyone else wanted to go to Pontoon, which makes sense since it wouldn't be the greatest idea to drag the fiance to Candy Bar. I didn't really feel like going but they talked me into it. A few more friends joined then we went through two bottles of Grey Goose rather quickly and ended up dancing away the rest of the night. The dancing thing is not something I do that often so I must have been really drunk. When I got into the room this afternoon, our favorite Russian player couldn't stop laughing as he said that I'm always too serious and that he'd never seen me relax and have fun until this night. I guess we don't hang out that much. I got a brief shot from our private table. It wasn't the best lineup I've seen there but maybe I couldn't see so well in my compromised state.

We finally found a proper maternity doctor and birthing place for my girlfriend. I decided to do some research online and found this place:

http://www.khemaclinic.com/

It's located in a far away part of town called Tuol Kork, but they opened a new branch nearby in BKK1 so we decided to make an appointment. I was blown away by how modern the entire facility was. They had all the modern equipment, the doctors spoke English and they were all trained in foreign countries. So it turns out that my girlfriend is 12 weeks into her pregnancy and everything checks out fine. We've had an ultrasound before but it was very early so this was the first proper one where we could pretty much see everything, well almost. They still can't determine the sex yet and said that would have to wait 4 more weeks until the next scan. As I have previously mentioned this is my first biological child so the entire experience was quite moving and I admit that I even cried at one point. The entire thing cost only $26 and while my girlfriend thought that was too expensive, it was just fine by me. If everything checks out fine during the next appointment, we probably will commit to having the baby there.

I've already decided to name him Ross after my boss, if it's a boy. It's actually his last name but as we have the same first name, I really didn't want to have a son who's a "junior." I haven't decided if it's a girl, although I am partial to the name Clare or Claire.

Hey guys wanted to ask couple of questions about Cambodia because plan to move there for several month probably around February-March.
I am 32 been in a relationship last 3 years with thai GF so not interested with all the hookers/girl stuff anymore.

What I am looking for is stable internet (still doing quite well playing online poker). Places to run/walk and also some good gym nearby would be nice. And on top of that super tired of Thai food would love to have some mall/market where I could buy some imported stuff and some nice restaurants.

So have several questions tbh.

1) Phnom Phen or Sihanoukville. I mean I don't mind if it is a boring city given I won't do the girly stuff. So if thats out of the window which city would you choose. And what part of the city would you chose based on the criteria I have? I might play some live poker from time to time but given they allow smoking I will probably do it rarely and more to meet some new people and socialize with like minded individuals rather than really grind.

2) Apartment/House rent
Would you go with the Agency or do it on your own. In Thailand you will get a lot better offer when you go to the place rent hotel for like 2-3 days and look for the agencies/individual offers because online prices are ridiculously inflated mostly targeting tourist that don't know any better.

3) Does anyone tried to move like more stuff from Thailand to Cambodia? I have like 10k $ PC equipment+Aeron Chair. Would preffer to take it with me so could avoid spending more than needed.

4)Bank account. Can you get a bank account that works with USD?What documents you need in order to open a bank account in Cambodia? I mean from what I see here usd is like 2nd currency you can use to pay for everything so I could use it there right. Does anyone here use skrill/neteller? Can you withdraw USD from ATM or only Reil (or whatver their currency is called)

5) Bike driving license. Have thai motorbike license you need to do some exam etc or you can switch/use your Thai license there??
Probably going to buy some bike when in Cambodia cause hate taxis/tuktuks.

Will really appreciate all the info/help.

1) Phnom Penh simply because the infrastructure is much better. Services like internet is much more stable and you'll have more options. Food delivery, Uber and far better Western food choices are all here in Phnom Penh.

2) Go with an agency or agent and don't even bother looking online. The agents don't get anything from you as their commission comes from the owner.

3) Not sure but the last guy who made such a move sold off a lot of his stuff before coming here.

4) When you come in you should get a business Visa. It'll initially be for one month but then you can extend it the first time up to a year. If you show a bank at least a six month renewal and a rental agreement, getting an account is easy. And USD is the dominant currency here as everything is transacted with it. Riels are used like coins for change. I wouldn't keep too much in Skrill or Neteller as it will be difficult to take out here.

5) As long as your Thai license is current and is not near expiring you should be able to get a license here. No exam required, you just have to pay.

Good luck.

When it comes to using Skrill card in Cambodia I had no issue with that. My Skrill Mastercard worked perfectly fine with ATMS in PP and Sihanoukville. I guess they simply don't offer cards to Cambodian citizens but if you have one they work perfectly fine.

Def tons of western food choices in PP and most of them pretty decent too, many other good choices too. Sihanoukville has the beach and prolly cheaper costs of living. Maybe more peace and quiet, dunno

Sihanoukville is more a village than a city, so if you want shopping malls, cinema, etc would definitely go with Phnom Penh..Also small correction to what pt wrote, unfortunately not anymore possible to get 12 month visa without special documents even for first time you now only get 6month multi entry :/

Hey Pronto, are there still any $0.50/$1 ($1/$1?) games going in Snooky? Thinking of heading down there around Christmas/NYE time, if so whereabouts? Wouldn't be interested in playing any lower/higher.

I've been a bit under the weather lately and busy with the poker room so haven't gone out as enthusiastically as before. That hasn't stopped me from going out to eat as we don't generally cook too much at home. So I thought I would just list some of my favorite restaurants that I've been to lately with friends and my girlfriend and what we ordered.

1) La Residence - Beef Bourguignon and Lamb Stew
A great French restaurant not too far from the Riverking that the boss and I like to go to. The quality of the beef is top notch and the service fantastic.

2) 상하이 (Shanghai) Chinese Restaurant - Spicy/Sweet Sour Pork and Cha Chiang Mien (Noodles w/ black bean sauce)
Koreans have their own take on Chinese food that is vastly different and this restaurant is one of the few in Phnom Penh to serve up this variant. Dishes are much richer with many different types of sauces and spicy and sweet flavors are accentuated.

3) Gerbie's Salad & Sandwich - Scrambled eggs and smoked salmon open sandwich
The newest entry among the great sandwich restaurants in Phnom Penh, but also easily the best. They have a wide selection of sandwiches from baguette, open faced and paninis. And they offer more than just the traditional fare, although they do those excellent as well.

4) Sik Gaek Korean Restaurant - Yukhoe (Beef Tartare)
The variant we ordered includes live octopus (or squid???) on top of the raw beef. This is easily one of the best Korean restaurants in town. A great place to go with friends as each party gets their own private room.

With Christmas coming up, I've been debating whether or not to teach my daughter about Santa Clause. I don't think I'll go as far as getting a tree as I live on an incredibly high floor without an elevator. But I will probably end up getting her a present as I'll definitely be giving my girlfriend a gift. And now as I'm writing this I just realized that this will be my first Christmas with my own actual family. I'm starting to hit some sureal milestones in my life that I still can't wrap my head around. My daughter cries every day when I go to work and she can almost stand on her own now. It shouldn't be that long before she can walk on her own. And of course we have another child on the way. For reasons related to the management of the room, I'm working more night shifts now and I see very little of both my girlfriend and my daughter as I'll head into the room early at 3:00 PM. I usually sleep in considering when the room closes so I don't wake up with anyone else. Then again it keeps me on my best behavior as I don't go out drinking as much. I'm rambling a bit here but it's near 3:00 AM and my mind gets a certain way when flooring for a game this late.

Speaking of Riverking and Christmas, a player just asked me if we're going to be open on Christmas. We will be open as we are on every major holiday and I can't remember the last time, if ever, the room was dark. But it did get me to thinking that we might want to do a special themed dinner for the holidays. As most already know, we have a restaurant here at the Riverking but we order food from the outside every Sunday to sample some of the best restaurants in town. We do the Hummus House a lot as the owner plays in the room and we also get Tex-Mex from Taqueria Corona as the players love their food. And since Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday this year, it would make a lot of sense to do a holiday dinner. We probably won't be able to pull off a turkey, but there is a rotisserie place where they do whole chickens not too far from here. It won't be exactly the same, but like so many other things here in Cambodia it'll be close enough. Perhaps we'll even play some Christmas music in the room that day. I think fatherhood is making me nostalgic and sentimental.

With the room being so busy and Yazzx grinding a lot, we haven't really had a chance to hang out as much lately. So we set some time the other day to catch up and grab some sushi at one of our favorite restaurants the Sushi Bar. I think when he goes with his Mrs the bill usually comes out to around $30. The fact that ours was over $50 probably means we ordered too much. One of these nights if the game breaks early we have to complete the cycle by going out for some drinks.

In the meantime I met up with some players at night to hit up street 136. This isn't my favorite street anymore but I still don't mind going to the Tiger Bar as they bought out the place next door and combined with it to form a larger bar. The place is practically a club now and comes fully equipped with a dancing stage where several girls will take their turns throughout the night.

I have one more day off tomorrow so I think I'll spend it with the Mrs by going to Aeon mall and catching the Star Wars movie and probably dinner as well. Some of the players from the Riverking have already seen it and report good things.

It's been a hectic week for me to be sure. On Friday I took a short trip to Siem Reap and it was the first real time that I had spent in this city. I love Phnom Penh, but I was really impressed with this city as it was a real proper town in a different way. It is the first city in Cambodia that reminded me of walking through a town in America with proper shops, restaurants and cafes. And everything was so clean and the level of service so high. And the hotel I stayed at was unbelievably nice for only $20 per night.

The night is a different story as Pub Street is a complete zoo. The music is booming, drinks are cheap and people are partying everywhere. There are also the more familiar sights to Cambodia with girls walking up and down the street looking for their next date. I've been told by many that this city is lacking in the more adult elements. And while I can see how one would get that impression during the day, I saw no shortage of it at night.

I flew back on Saturday after an hour delay of sitting in an airplane with no air conditioning. I touched back down in Phnom Penh at 5:00 PM, got to the Riverking by 6:00 PM and started my shift. The games ran until about 4:00 AM that night so I closed the room shortly thereafter then got a few hours of sleep before opening the room at 11:00 AM.

Later that night I took out a few of the players on a Christmas Eve night out on the town. They were already pretty drunk by the time I met up with them so it wasn't hard to keep the party rolling. We started on street 104 and we got there in two separate tuk tuks which meant that they had to insist on racing there of course. For once we started at Rose Bar instead of ending our night there and perhaps that was a mistake. The guys didn't seem as if they were feeling it so we split up and I took a few of them to the infamous Cyrcee Secret Bar. The bars are great and everyone knows I love them, but sometimes guys just want to get laid without all the foreplay. About an hour and a half later they all left with a smile because no one leaves there disappointed.

The following morning I took a taxi to Sihanoukville to meet up with the boss on Christmas day as he was vacationing there with his family. It wasn't a real holiday for me as I just had business to discuss with him that couldn't wait. So I kept the wife home, packed a few things and headed down for just an overnight stay. Once there we got much accomplished in regards to room business but it was Christmas after all so he included me for Christmas dinner later that night with his family, something for which I was very appreciative.

I have very romantic memories of living in Sihanoukville, something that was squashed almost immediately during this trip. I now remember why I left in the first place. I know there's been a lot of talk lately about the games there, but it seemed like the same sh*t town that it always have been. Nothing worked while I was there such as WiFi and there were rolling blackouts throughout the night. While I enjoyed the time with my boss' family, the food down there is still pretty garbage with only a couple of exceptions. Every poker room is still run like a zoo with the worst dealers imaginable. And don't even get me started on the Square. For Christ's sake every girl is either underage or some busted up meth head. I hung out with Pronto and a few other friends before calling it a night and leaving the next morning. I got home a few hours ago and basically passed out having just woken up. There's still a game running at Riverking so I was tempted to go play but it's 5-10 right now so oh well.
