To rule by the book or to rule by fairness/spirit of the game?
Certain things in poker are very clear cut.
It was a 1-1 Omaha game, hand was checked down on the river. My opponent tabled his hand and I announced "three pair". "Oh, you have a straight" I said and threw my hand into the mucked pile. "Ace high" the dealer clarified, stating that I have misread my opponent's hand as she shipped a $60 pot towards him. I shook my head and my opponent smiled as he threw a $5 chip my way as consolation.
It was a mistake on my part and I conceded the pot to my opponent. I looked over at PT who was watching the game, shrugged my shoulders, and continued the Omaha grind. Everyone in the game, including me, knows that my hand is clearly dead and my opponent profited from my mistake. I have no problem with that.
Not for this case.
It was a 1-2 Hold em' game at Naga. Similar situation. My opponent tabled his hand and I announced I have the winning hand, a pair of 8s over his 77s. As I was about to flip over my cards, it dropped and touched the betting line. I immediately flipped over my cards and my opponent quickly said "Dead hand! Muck it dealer!" The dealer stated that my hand is a fold. As she reached for my cards, I pulled it back and raised a storm. I am not going to stand for this bull****. I literally shouted and screamed for a proper ruling, so much so that three security guards came over to calm the situation down. Me dramatic? Probably.
What made me so angry wasn't about the money ($30 pot size) but more about how my opponent was clearly taking advantage of me. We both knew that I make a genuine error of dropping my cards when I intend to flip the winning hand over. Any other player on the table would have overlooked and conceded the pot to me. Moreover, he was being very rude and aggressive when I explained myself. I stood my ground. I told the staff if they kill my hand, I'll never come back here to play. And I mean it.
The game was stalled for about 15 minutes as the management checked the CCTV footage. What's the final ruling?
The floor ruled in my favor.
And their reasoning is this. I have verbally declared my winning hand and the CCTV showed that I accidentally dropped my cards when I was going to flip it over.
Just to make a statement, I tossed the rest of my table mates a dollar each (besides the mother f***er) before cashing out. It's not about the money. I can always earn it back through other means besides poker. But to be bullied and be taken advantage of, it's a big no-no and I'll kick, scream, fight, do whatever it takes to protect my boundaries.
I later asked the floor manager at RK about the above case. He shared that had the floor ruled strictly by the book, my hand should be dead. In my case, the floor ruled by the spirit and fairness of the game, since I fully intended to table my hand. The floor manager shared a case where he had to rule against a local bong because he tabled his winning hand so forcefully, it went face down over the betting line towards the mucked pile. He didn't have much of a choice and had to declare that his hand is dead.
