Stop giving out free food and every hour splash the pot with a free meal token.

I've never heard of it done before though it probably has been, but I think a great promotion would be a cash prize for most pots won in a time frame. Like $100 every two or three hours. Dealers can just hand out little tokens to the winner of each pot and whoever has the most at the end of the time frame gets the cash. You could even make it most post flop, or won on the turn or won on the river. I imagine just a small incentive like that would create some pretty serious action.

Overall promotions that encourage action are much better than promotions that encourage time at the table.

Are promotions even needed? I know it's your job to try and drive traffic to the room but anybody who is into poker and in PP is going to RK regardless of any promotions. If anything I'd say you just need to promote the room more to try and get rec tourists to come and that's probably best done through advertising. Get an ad in the air Asia magazine, Facebook adds, etc... With the main promotion probably being that you'll send a tuk tuk to new player's hotels to pick them up as they may not be comfortable to navigate PP on their own. It's easy for them to just get in a tuk tuk and ssh naga.
Talk to some of your regs who frequent the naga game and try to find out how many actual tourists end up at that game and if it's significant enough to invest to divert them to RK.
You have free food and drinks which gives you a good advantage and cross promoting with bars is another good idea.
The big disadvantage is that a night game of nlh isn't super consistent. Tourists are doing touristy stuff during the day and poker is a nighttime thing for them.

This 👍 and any promotion that encourage active playing on the table, isn't that bad for business if your room get the money from rake..I mean,if the table play too active,it breaks sooner, isnt that bad for business?

Probably not your desired clientele but what about promoting at hostels and run a $30 hippy backpacker hyper sng on a Tues night or something. Offer a meal and free beer with entry and maybe be willing to spread something like .50-1.00 following the sng.
Don't know if those stakes make sense for the room revenue wise, just throwing out ideas.
Does bring another thought to mind though? Are you guys listed in lonely planet and other travel guides? Not all backpackers are broke and tons of tourists use those guides anyways and may bring some people in that otherwise wouldn't know about you.

Hello,

I'd like to know how feasible it is to move from Chiang Mai to Phnom Penh to grind live poker with a thai GF and 2 dogs (female puppy 7 months old).

We are only worry about safety, money not really a issue, yes cost of living is higher but the visa situation is much better.

So if our *project* is possible, is there a area that we should start looking at?

Thx!

But I was pleasantly surprised as we ran both games everyday and the Hold'em game even held longer than usual. But I was most surprised about the PLO game as we not only ran it everyday, but it ran $5-$5 most of the time and even went up to $5-$10 on certain occasions. Our Sunday tournament ran as usual and those that play bigger even organized a "high roller" event that ran concurrently. They did a $500 tourney with one re-buy and add-on that was limited to one table. The total prize pool nearly ran up to $10K at $9,500 so it was rather a great success.

We're making a few changes, or rather tweaks, to our promotions namely the hotel deal and the food. It's not really that any of the new players or locals were taking advantage, but the benefits were somewhat disorganized and unclear at times. So I've cleaned it up a bit so that everyone should know exactly what the deals are and what they can expect.

50% off at $10 per night does it mean that the full price is only $20 per night? It seem very low for a casino.

http://sunnyresidentrealty.com/ - sorted me out, just get in touch with them and give them a price range & area preference and they will take you around a few places. As you don't know PP that well, it might be worth telling them/or me what sort of area you're looking for.

Sounds like you're settled so I doubt Riverside would be for you which is where all the main expat night life is and the seedy side of PP - that's the main action area but Independant Monument, BKK1/2 or Russian Market areas may be better for you as they're a lot quieter and you don't get bothered by beggers/tuk tuk's constantly and they're 5-15 minutes depending on traffic away from riverside anyway. Plenty of restaurants & coffee shop's etc round those areas, everything you need.

Riverside tends to attract the lowlife & degen expats/extended holiday types (Not knocking it, I lived there for 16 months and still go for a night out there) Whereas as you move further a field you get more balanced expats, settled guys like yourself & teachers/NGO types etc.

I keep reading about your safety concerns, it's fine.

That's because you can easily find a better apartment in PP for less than $600 a month.

I'm trying to encourage a friend to do this very thing at this present moment and coincidentally he's also from Chiang Mai. The visa situation also happens to be my main selling point to him. He's been grinding online and like many others is considering the possibility that playing live may be a better option going forward. There are examples in this town of people who play live and are earning a comfortable living. A close friend of mine switched from online to live a couple of years back, has a girlfriend and absolutely crushes the Riverking game. He would probably crush Naga as well but doesn't want to play $1-$2. Another friend of mine just recently moved here, has a more moderate monthly budget and does fine just playing at the casino. But these are all good players and how well you would do here is obviously dependent on many factors related to your skill and lifestyle. I'm certainly not the crusher like my two friends are and I have beaten the Riverking game over the last five months, albeit for a lower winrate but also under less optimal playing conditions.

Life is just full of coincidences as I played last night with a friend who also lives here with both a girlfriend and a huge dog. They live by the monument, drive a car and find the city perfectly safe. There are certain adjustments that people always have to make living in the third world, but seeing as how you've already lived in this region I would say you should be fine. Depending on your budget I would start looking at BKK 1 and/or 2, the area around the monument and Russian Market although this area is a bit further away. I live two blocks from the Riverking and one block from Pontoon nightclub and find it safe. Some may think it to close to the girlie scene at Pontoon and Sorya for their comfort, but it keeps the area busy enough that it's fine for me to walk home after work at late hours of the night.

As someone else pointed out we are not a casino but rather a poker club; we just happen to be located within a hotel. The current printing is for $10 per night and is a really good deal. Everyone is certainly different and there are those who would prefer more permanent arrangements, but most of our players taking advantage of the promo have found a certain level of comfort in having their living accommodations, electricity bill and food all being covered for $300 per month. There's a massage facility on site and we've had several players over the past months who've fallen into a nice routine of playing, eating, relaxing and living within basically the same area. And of course it's worked out for the poker room as well.

Had a decent night on basically one big hand as I won a three way pot with 22 on a board of 2s Ts 5s Kc 2h. It didn't hurt that one opponent had TT and the other Js7s. I won a bit more at the casino later in the night so I can't really complain. But I couldn't really enjoy the spoils of my labor as I had to get up relatively early this morning to help run the tournament. So maybe I am complaining. Tonight will probably be a different story as I'm most likely going out. #roughlife

In term of housing this is about what we need (around $200): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PS-YjPqqz8I

Even that it's much bigger than our house right now in CM that cost $115, but I can afford $200. I like the fact that in the video they have a roof, seem like the perfect spot for my dogs to have fun together.

I have send a FB msg to that agent you guys talk about.

p.s: Anyone know what area is the house in the video?

When I was getting shown apartments there were lots of them that were top floor (usually something like the 5th floor) and had some big, nice open air balconies. It seems like nobody wants to live on the top floor, but it would be a pretty good setup with dogs if you don't mind going up a bunch of stairs all the time. I was quoted $300/mo for those though.
