Was able to get pokerstars up and running. Took less than 12 hours. Seems as long as you have a somewhat legible lease your good. Did a p2p trade earlier, excited to get back on the grind later tonight.

There was no game on Friday so the brothers who run the room at Lion City were nice enough to treat the regulars to a night out at the KTV with them and the whole dealing staff. It was a great night of singing, drinking and dancing. Thanks to Tom and Huang for taking us out and treating a bunch of $100 NL players like some high rollers.

How far is this place from all the action and from the card room? How do you get about, I seen this place on http://sihanoukvilleproperty.com and thought it looked decent for $250, did not know it had a swimming pool included. Does the bedroom have a big window/door that leads onto the balcony or is that the hall? Did you pay a security deposit and did you pay the agent any fee?
Thanks in advance, have a good stay!

4_chainz's place is confirmed legit as I've been to it recently. When my lease runs out I may seriously consider moving into the complex. Personally $250 was a bit too high for me so I ended up getting a more "rustic" place that is definitely more of a Khmer style apartment than 4_chainz's place. Still, it was fully furnished and came with free cable and Wifi. On the latter though I bought a $40 router and had a cat-6 cable wired into my apartment to get a better signal.

Like 4_chainz I used an agency but did not pay them any money. Generally speaking the agency gets paid a commission from the complex owner. I pay $150 per month and the apartment's main feature is its large size. But being a Khmer style apartment, it's not as insulated as I would like and the gate that serves as my front door lets in insects and geckos from time to time. I signed a 6 month lease which means a 1 month deposit. Complexes will usually ask for 2 months when signing a 12 month lease.

Generally speaking the apartments that expats stay at are in downtown Sihanoukville. It's about 5 minutes inland from the beach and is filled with businesses and services that do their best to cater to Westerners. 4_chainz and I live fairly close to each other and Lion City is a bit under 2 miles from our apartments. Queenco, which just announced they will be re-opening their poker room, is a bit further away at about 2.5 miles.

The typical ways to get around town are in tuk tuks and moto bikes. The former seem to be more expensive here than in Phnom Penh as the default starting price in all negotiations seems to be at least $5. The cheapest way to get around is by moto taxi as many short rides won't even cost you $1 and seldom does a ride go higher. Of course you can always rent a moto, which is what I decided to do as 2 years living in Phnom Penh made me vow never to deal with tuk tuks again. Traffic is crazy in the sense that cars, motos and people come out of nowhere all the time. Although it is nowhere near as crazy as Phnom Penh, I have already been involved in 2 minor accidents here in Sihanoukville. I used the same agency that found my apartment to rent a moto and they charge me $70 per month. They also got me an international driver's license for $100 and gas will cost you no more than $1 per week.

I like the low rent of my place but it may be more third world living than some may want. As previously stated 4_chainz's complex will be an option but I may also try to get a few poker players together and try to rent a sick house.

Yeah I've seen some screen shots. It'll be enough for me to put the movie on in the background sometime while grinding when it comes out.

They're the dealers at Lion City and maybe I've been in Cambodia too long, but most of them are more than bangable.

Awesome post mate! Yeah 4Chainz apartment prob a little better but it is also $100 more. Bit late but I think an International license is like $5 back home, at least it is in the UK. I am not even sure you need one in Cambodia.

What about grocery shopping, what are the supermarkets like (big like Walmart etc or more just small corner shops), how easy is it to do a weeks shopping for example. Anyways great post, have a good stay!

I was getting stopped by the police about twice daily. First they started asking for my American license and when I provided that they said I needed a Cambodian/International license. All I know is they were stopping me constantly for bribe money and my leasing agent assured me getting this license would prevent that. Perhaps I overpaid, but I've been stopped many times since and they let me go each time as soon as I show them the new license. Lately they recognize me on the street and don't even stop me. I agree that you don't need one in Phnom Penh, but in Sihanoukville police checkpoints are constant and everywhere.

Supermarket shopping is a bit of a challenge here. Many, if not most items, are brought in from Phnom Penh and the store managers are not that good about keeping things in stock. Certain items will be out for weeks before they order them and even essentials like meat products will be completely out for days. There aren't any Western chains and there are plenty of small marts, but they are not as prevalent as in Phnom Penh. There is so much cheap food around that I've just found it to be not worth it to cook. I'll make breakfast and I have tons of ramen packages, but I don't make any real complex dinners. You can easily get a full meal at even Western restaurants for $3-$4 and eating at the casino only costs around $2 per meal.

I like your spot. Would be nice to figure out a screen or something for the gate and get a sofa.
Don't know if you cook much but the counter height in Asia is so tilting (and painful) but you have a good size kitchen and room to set up a bbq outside :-)
The only thing I'm not seeing is an air conditioning....

Confirmed that I do have aircon but only in the bedroom. It's a common setup here and I like it because my TV is in the living room which guarantees that the air is in only when I sleep. If they were in the same room my electric bill would be too high. In regards to the Khmer style "sofas" with the glossy finish, they may look nice but those things are the most uncomfortable seats known to mankind. BBQ is a nice idea but can only really be done by those in the higher floors. Doing it in the front would attract too many critters through that gate and thee have been snakes spotted in the back. I'm not really complaining about any of this. Frankly, this is the experience I expected when I first moved to Phnom Penh a couple of years back. I prefer this over the $350 apartment I had in the Russian Market.

Unrelated thought, but I've been pondering splintering off and starting a unique thread for Sihanoukville. I wonder if there is enough material and people down here. Thoughts?
