I am thinking of cambodia instead of thailand.. I keep hearing cambodia is half the cost of living compared to thailand.. I might just grow my own.

You can find good hotels in both cities at 15-20$ in both cities, with a bit of research. I stay at the same hotel when I go through both places. In Bangkok, Watana Mansion Hotel is a great 15 story hotel with mini fridge, bath tub, decent tv, restaurant + convenience store downstairs, massage (+extra) room service, balcony (the higher, the better), elevator and a big pool. It is also located by the train. As far as value, I cannot imagine better than this, even though I have not spent a significant amount of time in Bangkok, but always spend 1-3 days. 20$/night.

says 750 for a single, 800 for a double.

@alll who live/lived longer in Sihanoukville and maybe have some knowledge to help out with folllowing situation:

Unfortunatelly there has developped some fungus in the upper wall of my appartement.
Someone has adviced me to use a special lotion with chloride from Samudra, but it did not solve the problem.
According to the landlord now every appartement has developped some fungus cause its rainseason.
Obv. it is not built perfectly, but thats how it is here at most palces, I guess according to what other expands tell me.
Besides of this I like my appartement and feel at home here (nice neighbours, quite, no powercuts, good location...) - so I do not wanna move out if there is a chance to let it fix.
Landlord will only let it fix in bout 4 months, which is quite a long time to live with a fungus which might develop further - not the best for your health...

So when anybody of you know real experts regards to this topic which I can engage/book to fix the situation and in a professional way (not only remove fungus and paint over it) fully remove the fungus in a way that it does not come again,
then I would appreciate a PM with a contact to those ppl - thx!

Well, I just checked my Agoda bill, and I paid just under 24$ USand that included an American breakfast with coffee. Last time I was there, breakfast was not included and I do believe I saw a sign saying rooms are 20$/night... Either way, the breakfast makes up for the 3$ and change...

i checked the phnom penh hotel and it was $24 per night too, not $15.

In my experience the rate I paid was about half the rate posted on their counter. They said $35, I said "that seems a bit expensive", then they said ok $20, but no breakfast.

FWIW as far as weed goes. I spent the first night in Snooky in Victory hill, and the the first bar I went in to had some ladyboy rolling spliffs at the counter. I bought a girl a drink and they passed it around, i had about 3 goes on it and was stoned out of my mind. YMMV though because that's the first time I've smoked any for years.

If you want the modern amenities found in most Western countries, you will pay more in Phnom Penh than in Bangkok for the same level of standard. If you want to directly compare the hotel quality, then you typically end up paying more in Cambodia than in Thailand, this is obvious once you have stayed in enough hotels or check an online hotel booking site.

Western food in Cambodia that isn't disgusting? Please do share.

Comparing the absolute cheapest options in each country, finding the lowest common denominator, then proclaiming it having a higher standard of living for less is an absurd line of thinking. This is the LOWEST LEVEL OF SUBSISTENCE possible in each country, in which case, yeah Cambodia wins out over Thailand. But to say it's a great place to live if you are used to Western amenities and standards is blatantly wrong or at best, misleading.

I never talk down to anybody who has a legitimate question to ask. I only become this condescending asswipe when I am faced with idiots heralding false truths and misleading people on the forum who don't know any better.

And no, I like to reply with the quote on the bottom, sue me or better yet, skip my post if it's too challenging to read in this format. What a mental thing to complain about.

As a temporarily solution you can spray it with vinegar and wash away and spray again after. That should keep it away. This helps against molds, which I assume it is since you did not specify which kind of fungus the apartment got.

This is correct. If you want to live a western life, then you should live in a western country or at least choose a country that has a vide selection of luxury items like Thailand.

Luxury items will be much harder to find in Cambodia and probably quite a bit more expensive.

And you should never choose Cambodia just because you want to save money. Only if you like a little adventure in your life, and can live with some things being sub-standard to a modern western life.

fully remove the fungus in a way that it does not come again,
Your landlord is right. Rain season makes Cambodia very humid and fungus/mold is a big problem in most places. Even in a nice solid house like mine, we have some problems from time to time.

If you have it on the upper wall, it is most likely not coming from outside, but because the wall itself is getting wet inside the wall, from raining going into the wall somewhere. Chances are it is coming from the roof somewhere, or a crack in the wall, that lets water get into it. That can be very hard and very expensive to fix so it never returns.

So yes, you best bet will be to wash your wall a couple of times in a chlorine solution. It will kill the fungus. Paint over it, if you want. If the wall is colored, chlorine will bleach it and remove the color, so wait until it is completely dry. If it is done properly, you should not have anymore problems this season. But most likely it will return next year.

I am staying here right now ; from my experience, Agoda usually prices slightly higher then when you pay cash directly at the hotel. I paid 17$/night through Agoda for 5 night for the hotel is often full and then I will 15$/night cash, like the last time I was here.

To everyone else, I highly suggest these 2 hotels.

They used to change them at markets for a discount ( like $97) I normally pay them into my bank no problems or give them to people going to another country.
