That's not a policeman, if you see the picture there,he's some kind of officer, coordinate with Indonesian police force to guard the international school..

The police uniform colour is brown-ish with darker brown pants..

The bright jacket,used usually when they work/assigned to the road side,so it would be obvious for any two/four vehicle driver to see..

Im glad I found this thread man, I just came back from Bali and Im planning to go back in January 2016 for 2 months or so.
If anyone is wondering I tried ps.com, ps.fr and winamax and all worked fine from there. Food is cheap and accomodation too. People are absolutely fantastic, never experienced so nice and kind people. Girls are loving blond hair+blue eyes I experienced only 1 blackout which was due to having too many lights, A/C on. Internet was slow but seemed stable though I didnt play any session, just tried opening tables.
I had troubles with police too, I payed 300.000 rp for having "not valid" driving licence (which I had) but if you wanna avoid that, just have only like 50.000 in your valet and show them u dont have more and make some speach u got robbed yesterday or something. I also had my phone stolen, directly from motorbike I was on. My mistake for letting it in a drawer and not in my pocket or somewhere (I needed GPS).
This time it was only for vacation but in January I wanna grind hard so if anyone has a tip for good internet please let me know (I need backup internet too and some UPS for power backup would be also good I think).

Hospitals have credit card machines. There is literally no reason whatsoever to carry around so much cash. It's not very smart at all.

I live there 2years between 2006-2008..now live in Jakarta..occasionally I still travel to Bali for vacation or business trip

Regarding internet issues, try search in the Google

Www.Firstmedia.com (this is internet provider bundling with cable TV)

Keyword : Bolt 4G,Indonesia and look for the coverage area there (some kinda internet stick but generate Wi-Fi signal)

so who are these guys that pull over car (taxis with foreigners in them) at night in north jakarta. because earlier in the night there was another of these "police checks" in the distance, my driver noticed and quickly took the next corner.

if they aren't police then why are cab drivers stopping for them? are they off-duty police out of their official uniform? i don't understand why the real police would let them get away with it.

i don't like losing 3-5% on each transaction. in south-east asia you can change cash for basically the spot rate.

i already said that i never show the money in public. the money stays in the hotel and i take out the amount i'm going to change.

Then try to make sure the chances of you needing to use a credit card in a hospital are lower than the chances of you getting robbed while driving down a road to the airport.

You can rationalise it any way you want, carrying around $2000+ in cash is incredibly dumb. An experienced traveler should know better.

There are ATMs on every street corner. The chances of you ever actually needing that much cash all at once are much smaller than the chances of being robbed. In fact it's far more likely that your hotel safe would be robbed than it is you'd ever need $2000 in cash. Hotel safes get robbed all the time.

I am sure the officers that stops you is the policeman with vest like that,and the colors of their uniforms as I described**..(they usually stopping to find drugs or just occasionally make random stopping vehicle to earn some side pocket money)

never had anything stolen from a room safe in all my travels. i stay in hotels with good reputations.

using an $800 phone in public in a third world country is far dumber than carrying $2k in a cheap satchel bag and never ever taking out money apart from in the hotel room. the only way i can be robbed of that money is going to or coming from the airport late at night or early morning since it wouldn't happen in broad daylight. i mitigated the risk by taking a reputable bluebird cab from an official bluebird rank in front of the hotel.

not having the money on me meant i could have risked going to the station with them, but that's a big risk to go alone with them in the dark at 5am in the morning.

i've saved thousands by swapping money at money changers for the spot rate rather than getting raped by banks 3-5% per transaction. it more than offsets the $400 i lost through no fault of my own.

There are plenty of banks that offer travel cards with no foreign exchange fees. You could have saved thousands more by having one of those cards rather than paying commission to an exchange booth.

Again, there is no reason whatsoever to have that much cash on you. It's just asking for trouble. Keep your money in a bank like everyone else and you won't get robbed for thousands in cash.

in bangkok i get the spot rate. jakarta was the same.

if the money just sits in your safe all the time how is that really going to help you if you have an emergency when out and about and are taken to the hospital?

i forgot to mention that i nearly got pickpocketed by a couple of guys in jakarta as well.

nothing like this has happened in all the time i have spent in south-east asia, but an attempted pickpocketing and a shake down by police/thugs for $400 in the space of 3 days in jakarta. the pickpocketing was in a completely different part of the city.

you can blame me all you like, but i was dressed like a slob when they tried to pickpocket me. all my money was stuffed in my front pockets any way.

Hi guys. Bali is at the top of my short list for places I'm going to move to come March. Could someone help me out with any pertinent info as to setting up shop with the intention of grinding on PS. Banking info, visa info, housing info, etc. I have never traveled abroad and I want to minimize risk as best I can.

bombs and gunmen at sarinah mall in jakarta.

two guys tried to pickpocket me outside of this mall in november, then i went into the mcdonald's and had a 5,000 rupiah ice cream.

No. (At least not from Europe, and what I gather, not from much anywhere, it's an old policy and not enforced even if it's still valid.)

Also useful tip for anyone contemplating about staying longer time in Indonesia would be that, if you get the $35 visa on arrival, you can extend it by one month at imigrasi for ~300k, can't remember the exact price. You'll need a local sponsor for that, but shouldn't be a problem, just hook-up with some hottie in Tinder and ask them to sponsor you. Note: you need to go to imigrasi about 1 week before visa expires, because that's about how long it takes to renew it. Also takes 3 separate trips to imigrasi: 1st leave passport and application, 2nd go to pay and have your photo and fingerprints taken, 3rd pickup passport.

If you can get a sponsor letter (any kind of bull**** from local), than you can apply (outside of Indonesia, in an embassy) for a social visit visa, which is one-entry 6 months valid. After first 2 months you have to go to imigrasi to extend it every month until sixth and then you need to leave country again.

Rinse and repeat.
