Can anyone tell me if im allowed?

I'm 99% sure you can drive in USA with a valid british drivers license.

I also recall reading that you have to have held the license for a minimum of one year. When I search on this though I can't find any information.

Also if it is a 1 year wait, can I take a test in USA and then drive?

Thanks!

Are you just visiting the USA?

Your license should be valid here for a visit.

Each state issues it's own license and to obtain a driver's license in USA, you will probably be required to have a Social Security Number, which if you aren't an American ciitizen, not sure you can acquire.

Yes just visiting.

I keep hearing it 'should' work but I would like it if someone could give me a definite answer with supporting links if possible!

If I have to wait a year, I'm going to have to change my plans (currently learning to drive).

Only thing I can find about the 1 year is for rental car firms, requiring you held it for one year. Fortunatly I am going to buy. I will give some insurance companies a call tommorow and find out for sure!

unless they changed the rules, buying a car is a pain in the ass if you have no fixed US address.

Is that from an insurance point of view? Or because it needs to be registered or something?
