Can I ask why you chose Mérida? I suppose for the proximity to QR. But for me, there are way better options in Mexico for living in a big city. CDMX, Puebla, Guadalajara, Querétaro, etc. It's hot as **** in Mérida (even in February when I visited) and the women are possibly the worst I've seen in any large city (most have Mayan blood and are short and wide). That being said, many do really like Mérida, so I'm sure you'll have fun there.

I'd probably take you up on it for a month, but I'm moving to CDMX in February for 6+ months.

OK, then you chose well. Querétaro and Mérida are probably the 2 safest cities in the country. But I would argue that the crime aspect is really exaggerated for most of the country, save some of the heavily disputed narco zones. I've been in 15 cities in Mexico and have never felt in danger or unsafe a single time.
