Be interesting to hear how he's supporting a family.

A kid only costs like $200/month or whatever in Thailand, Thai's manage it.

Check his thread? There's a hundred pics of the kid. He posted a graph showing he was making $30k/year after rakeback, tax free that's more than enough to get by in Thailand.

Is everyone's goal supposed to be to live in SEA forever if they can do it? I never thought OP had this goal - and he mentioned not wanting to play poker - I think he was going to work on a YT channel. So , it didn't go perfectly, but good experience - go home, re-baseline your life, and plan for your next goals.

Re: Clueless kid moving to Manila - Never been to Asia before

Seemed like his goals changed pretty quickly once he got there though. At first it seemed like he was planning to bang lots of girls, but then realized he prefers an LTR. I'm sure if that was still going well he'd definitely be viewing Pasig as a long-term destination.

Also, the YT stuff never got off the ground and he mentioned several times some variation of "next week I'm FINALLY gonna grind 50 hours a week". So the posters here were merely responding to what he himself repeatedly claimed.

I agree though, he's young and it's a great life experience, no big deal if he has to go back and if he wants to return, he could easily make it happen in a year or 2.

Excuse my ignorance, but how do 22 yo. westerners make it happen in SEA in a year or two, if they're busto at present? Magically grow skills and increase efforts multifold, because ... they're home again and then make a killing at what? I'm still not in the clear on how that's ever going to work.

I agree and I give this advice in other threads - if you can't grind at home and support yourself from poker you sure as ****e not going to be able to do it from a third-world country. I think that's why most of these travel threads end in a busto conclusion.

Pretty much what I asked, stacking shelves at the grocery stores for a year or two won't fix anything

By no means I'm intending to flog a dead horse. He's been pretty straight forward with the prospect of potentially ending up where he apparently is. Talk about aiming low though... but OK, odds were stacked against him.

Just all those people padding him on the back on top of it and suggesting a retry in forseeable future owe us an answer on how exactly that will ever be feasible.

I have been poker pro for many years but while traveling around the world I met a ton of guy doing just like this. I mean they would work in their country 6 months-1 year and living hermit life and after they would go Thailand/Colombia/Argentina whatever. They weren't really poker pro they were just guys that were hoping to use poker as a way to stay just a little longer. It just with poker as other forms of gaming it is just harder and harder to do it semi professionally .
They would always hang out with poker pros and often living with them too often getting busto (no surprise here).

Personally I don't see anything wrong with that approach. The problem is Hero of this Story tried to replicate kick2dante story without any real life skill and no poker skill to back it up (dunno what kick2dante does now for a living but remember back in the days he was beating nl100 fr on 888 and was really putting the volume too (I was playing the games there too) ).

But again if he just create a realistic plan (I will go to Germany work 6 months- 1 year save all I can and come back to live here for as long as possible and the repeat) I don't see anything wrong with this.

I met quite a few young guys when I was traveling doing just that. Don't see anything wrong with this tbh.

People dont have a problem with this type of plan, people are questioning how easy others are suggesting it is to save up the cash to get back out.

Assuming OP has no skills that render him applicable for anything other than a minimum wage job.

He'd have to fly home, find a place to live(hes young, but not young enough that living with your parents isnt sad), he then has to look for and get accepted for a job. Minimum wage in Germany is $10.50/hour pre tax(according to a 30 sec google search), so even if he manages to scoop a full time job(40 hours/week), he'll only be clearing ~$1300/month.

I knew a guy who saved $10k in a year working minimum wage for his Asia/Australia trip, but he was grinding like a mo fo, 70 hour weeks with two jobs, OP cant commit to playing a game for 100 hours/month.

If he is forced to go home, probs best to focus on getting life sorted and giving up the Asia dream, unless of course he finds himself in the situation were it is viable(starts an online business).

Best bet if you go busto in Asia would be to try to obtain an Australian work visa, work on the farms for a few months and then youll be back with a reasonable bankroll in 6 months(I think).

Re: Clueless kid moving to Manila - Never been to Asia before

Couple of good answers. Thumbs up.

While your experiences with certain people and ideas on how to continue with this lifestyle are within reason, I'm looking at the long term picture.

Grinding seasonal jobs in Australia, going back home stacking shelves and then going back to the Philippines. If you're 20something that might seem like a plan, but what about those that actually get older with time?

IMO the only sustainable way is to have income during the times in the Philippines, therefore the odd job abroad only acts as a way to finance an extended holiday. Thus entrepreneurial spirit is asked for, but so far we haven't witnessed much in this regard.

And don't get me even started on social security, pensions, health insurance, etc. Do you really want to sacrifice the best years of your life to get into a solid financial situation (education, job experience, promotions don't happen while stacking shelves) for chasing tail?

Imagine you'd be able to sustain yourself in the Philippines on this level for the next 20 years, then you're 40something. One disc prolapse later you're basically ruined and that's only a mild hiccup compared to what could really happen on the way.

As a German, stating the affairs of 2017 and in no way applicable to the distant future, you're pretty lucky to have the fallback to a safe survival (which isn't pretty, but at least you won't have to fear for your life) by virtue of the tax payer. In SEA you have nothing of the like without income.

I'm glad I found SE Asia much later in life.

I would be a wreck had I found it at 21...

Maybe degen wise you'd be a wreck but getting to SE Asia at 21 is the nuts. Mind you living on 600 a month still wouldnt be great even at 21.

BGC is the nuts im staying there now, wouldnt stay anywhere else. That being said u just wont find anything for less than a 6 month contract unless u wanna pay 2k+ a month (talking about new, modern apartments)
I got mine through a girl who is friends with the owner and I still had to pay 6 months in advance+ 2 months deposit 480k total first day

I think your best bet is airbnb and bargaining with the owner for a 2 month rental.

I'm not sure if bgc has it, but there are some short term rental places in Makati.
