Pressed for time and haven't lurked the entire thread yet, but I literally just heard the other day that poker in Brazil even existed and I can't wait to look into it more.

My family is from Brazil and I have been going to Rio my entire life, and tbh I feel more safe in the areas I spend my time there than I do a lot of time in Chicago. Obviously there are districts that are incredibly dangerous for tourists, but I couldn't imagine how one would end up there.

This is going to be an amazing excuse to spend an extended period of time in Brazil and travel to the South, which I hear is beautiful from all my friends who live there, since I've only been to Rio and São Paulo.

Just got back from 2 months in rio , planned to stay for 10 days but was too good to leave, I stayed in a hotel in Copacabana for a bit then met some locals who said Ipanema is way better , and i much preferred it especially if your thinking longer term, Copacabana just feels a bit unsafe .

Ipanema is like 10 min cab ride from Copacabana , beach is no more than few mins walk , few bars/clubs/restaurants , supermarket, gyms, tennis clubs , and feels a lot safer , im planning to go back in September if your about then

Florianopolis. Not as big as Rio (not even close), less crime, less polution, fair weather. Nice towns and beaches to visit around the state. Cons: very touristic, but most beachtowns are anyway, and Floripa is the less problematic of all imo.

It´s not the cheapest brazilian city by any means, but with the currency situation, it might be good value for poker players and ppl with dollar/euro etc incomes. Keep in mind BRL is a very volatile currency and goes into extremes (overvalued/undervalued) far more often than your normal currency, so the good value part may change.

Thanks you for the reply.

In Florianapolis you feel you are in Brazil or its more look like you are in "holidays" with european and american?

I actually live in Playa del Carmen (Mexico) and i like this place because we are like in holidays but we can find lot of locals and the city is "human sizing". (200 000 peoples) and party is ok. I'm a bit scary about big city like Rio.

Definitely I feel I am in Brazil when I visit Florianopolis (maybe Argentina lol). Most tourism in Brazil still comes from brazilians. Due to its proximity, you´ll find many argentines and uruguayans, but never surpassing local tourists. Not saying there aren´t europeans and north americans, but when you consider the overall city, the beaches etc, it´s still Brazil, the language you´ll mostly listen will still be portuguese etc.

Climate, despite being so close to Argentina/Uruguay, still is considered tropical, but if you want to catch warmer climate, avoid the winter months. Smalltowns upstate, especially in the mountains, can get extremely cold and experience heavy snowfall. Countryside also received a very big immigration wave from germans during the first half of the 1900s, so if this is not your thing, avoid the countryside and stick only to the beachtowns.

Party scene is pretty good in Florianopolis and other cities on the shoreline like Balneario Camboriu for example.

Btw, local population is a little less than 500.000, so not too big, but definitely not a small city.

hello, i'm portuguese and i wanna know, how much it actually costs to stay in brazil in a cheap city but near the beach.
like renting an apartment, internet, common bills.
for europeans is it easy to get the visa?

The same as brazilians going to europe (reciprocity), so you can stay up to 90 days without a visa as a tourist (within any 180 days period). Hum, can´t say for sure as it varies a lot depending on the place/region/how touristy is the place/etc. Also remember that short term rentals are more expensive or might be close to impossible to get, so your best option might end up being airbnb.

One place that I remember as cheap and nice was João Pessoa, in the northeastern tip of Brazil. Normal rent there for a small apartment (1-2 br) in safer neighborhoods was smth around 1500-2500 BRL including taxes+"condomínio" fee (common expenses of the building). Internet I´m basing on how much it costs here right now, should be around 100 BRL for 15 Mbps which is usually the lowest speed as far as I remember. Faster obv gets more expensive. Other expenses (electricity, cell phone etc) , probably around 200 BRL. Groceries, 900-1500 BRL/mo. 1 EUR ~ 4.48 BRL.

Cheers

Yes definitely Brazil is one of the good place to visit. I had visited Brazil in 2015 and experience was good. I enjoyed food, hangouts, restaurants etc there. I also liked the environment very much.

Hi, I plan to go to Rio in November 2019 with my friend and his gf. If we like it we gonna spend there 3+ months. I m collecitng information now. Is there any RIo telegram/skype/fb group with pokerplayers or expacts? I heard that Leblon is best area to stay for foreigner (people speak english, safe and nice). I was in Brazil 6 years ago in Florianopolis and I remember it was a mare to find any accomadation and everything was so expensive. People in real estate agencies simple didnt give a **** lol and they spoke 0 english. I dont have too good memories from Florianopolis but my friends moved then to Rio and told me it was completely different story and amazing. So yea it s time to check it out. I d like to go to gym , training mma and maybe learn salsa or samba. Maybe some recomendations in Leblon area? I will be thankfull for help especially with finding accomadation.

PM me and I’ll send you my WhatsApp number

You do not need to stay in Leblon. A lot depends on your experience traveling, budget and expectations and how many women will be staying with you. Rio can be dangerous (theft) but can be mitigated pretty substantially.

Ipanema and most of Copacabana should also be just fine. Copa by far the cheapest. For me it’s better to be near the beach. If beach isn’t important then more options open up. I’d definitely try and pick up some basic Portuguese. Several schools do crash courses for foreigners to help with basics like menus and directions.

But Rio is the GOAT. Sick quality of life.
