Yes, you can get it eazy and the quality is medium. There are some pros, but not many. We have a poker forum in Brazil and you can get to know almost all the pro's there, you can check it at www.maisev.com.

You can play poker live in PA as well, the action is terrific, but the rake is 5% uncapped.

Someone said gambling is illegal Hand_Crasher is that true? What language is that site in and is there a way to translate to English?

PA is sounding like the perfect place but i only speak english with very little spanish.

I saw ads of casinos and I was able to log on to all sites and play while in Brazil. So I don't think it is illegal.

Internet is reliable, the most of the broadband connections are DSL or cable based.
There´s no restriction by playing online poker in Brazil. The only restriction is put by the credit card operators. You would not be able to make a deposit in PokerStars using your brazilian credit card. But you probably would use your own international credit card or debit card, so its not a problem. We do have a lot of traders here to buy and sell credits in pokersites due to this restrictions, but smart people get other solutions (as entropay.com for deposits and neteller debit card for atm cashouts).

I think that for $500/mo you should have a nice spot to live.

@live poker: gambling is not allowed in Brazil, since its classified as gambling. The gov. doesn´t decide yet if poker is a game that depends of the luck or not, so its a little nebulous, but you can certainly find a good place to play live. The only problem, as they have mentioned, is the rake: 5% uncapped is insane.

here we speak portuguese. If you know spanish, it may help you, but won´t solve your problem (both languages are similar in some points). About the site, its the biggest brazilian poker forum ( www.maisev.com/forum ), its in portuguese, obv. You should get replies even if you post in english.

If you can´t speak a word in Portuguese get someone here to help you with the translations (specially in the beginning).

Casinos are ilegal, but you can find a few poker clubs. Some of them are very big.
The internet is good. You can get cable/dsl/3g. Cable and DSL are the best, 3g is kinda bad.

@ OP

i was born in porto alegre and have lived there all my life. this is not the first time that ive seen a foreigner say these things that you are saying about it. in fact, last summer we had a couple american friends who stayed at my familys beach house (1h from porto alegre via freeway/highway) and they absolutely loved it and were begging for us to adopt them at the end lol (they are 23).

ever since then and ever since ive met some outsider ive been thinking that if i were to be born outside of porto alegre and brazil, i would love if i had the opportunity of having someone to actually introduce me to it

particularly I too have always wondered why people go to thailand and BA instead of here, but its obviously because theyve never heard of it and havent had the chance to compare it and ****

pokerwise i play MSNL and HSNL and consider PA to be reallly really really an awesome place for someone who earns their life through poker. its very cheap compared to some other comparable places yet it still has a lot of very good and high life places. the poker scene 'boomed' 1 year ago and has ever since produced some quite fishy and loaded opposition, but the games that are spread wouldnt be considered to be anywhere near high stakes. across the city there are like 3 very good 'poker houses' (official casinos are prohibited in brazil) which host cashgames and tournaments (again they arent the most baller options out there) but they shouldnt be the best option for someone wanting to grind a living, keep it online.

ammm i dunno, florianopolis is also great but ive only been there a few times and cant really talk about it other than its like porto alegre but smaller and with beautiful beaches nearby

for $500/month you can rent a 2 bedroom studio in the best area of town (moinhos de vento), with all the good things u need around you like nightlife/fine dining places, amenities shops, big shopping mall with cinemas and a very big park with a lot of trees around on the streets and whatnot

As rica I also was born in Porto Alegre and lived my entire life here. Ever since I started playing poker for a living I have traveled all around the world, I've been to many many places and for some reason I always find the need to come back to Porto Alegre. We do have problems with urban violence I can't lie to you, but if you avoid certain regions of the city your odds of being a victim of any kind of crime will decrease drastically.

All the main aspects of the city were pretty much covered by what rica said, it's in fact a very cheap, clean and resourceful place to live. You always hear about foreigners saying that people in Brazil are very receptive and over all nice when in fact when you go to cities that have a big tourist traffic you will find rudeness and "dirty" people trying to get away to little schemes, but in Porto Alegre people have a VERY VERY different way of approaching things, I'm trying not to sound snob but in PA we have a way higher level of education than the rest of the country and that reflects in the way things work around here, for example the cab drivers are MUCH MUCH nicer than in the rest of the country, what I mean by that is that here we have a more American approach sorta speak, things are "more official" than in the rest of Brazil where in many situations people tend to stretch a few rules and let some things fly in order to get something done (bribes, abuse of power from the police and so on.). Though I think people from PA, are just nicer than average by default I think that would look suspicious coming from me that's why I tried to explain as much as I could but it feels a little confusing now that I'm reading it again, I hope you guys can get the message from it.

Bottom line: PA>Brazil, don't get me wrong Brazil is great but I just feel that we are ahead in terms of quality of life than the rest of the country and I really hope they'd catch up with us.

One more thing, if you are foreign and want to come to Porto Alegre you might be in luck, my mom works exactly with this type of thing she actually makes arrangements for companies who need to bring executives from outside of the country, she will take care of housing (hosekeeper or maid if wanted.), car (driver if wanted), over all guidance to the city, information about how to get a permission for your visa (extend it or make it permanent if possible.), if you guys want more information you can e-mail her at amarilisdn@gmail.com or you can add me in the msn or google talk using giovanni.davids@gmail.com for both programs, I know everything about the logistics of my mom's arrangements so I'd be able to clear any doubts you might have about anything. Just to save some of your time, there is not a fixed price for anything it's all according to what's arranged for the client so if any of you want prices you'll have to provide a list of everything you'd like to get here and she'd make a detailed list of how much each thing would cost with her fee included.

roe, Portuguese is classified as Category I language. Which is the easiest category to learn for English speakers. If you move to PA you should immediately sign up for an intensive (2-3 hour a day) Portuguese course. You can contact tr3cool about it. I don't think you can function well socially w/o learning Portuguese. However, you can probably be fluent in half an year . Before you go you can try Pimsleur's Brazilian Portuguese. It is available on some torrent sites. I did 12 of the 90 lessons and was able to get by reasonably well in Brazil. I imagine if you do all 90 it will give you a headstart and you will be extremely comfortable in the beginning.

Any thoughts on Florianópolis for Carnival? We're going with a group of 10-12, hoping to find a house near the beach. Let me know if you can set me up with anyone renting out their place.

I'll be moving from vegas this fall. Brazil sounds awesome from reading this thread, but if I moved there on a whim, it wouldn't be alone.

I'd also be up for the idea of moving there.
