Come live in Recife. Warm beaches, beautiful women and good places for playing poker. Logical violence that has, as elsewhere in Brazil. But you can go to the south coast and visit other beaches very beautiful and have a great quality of life. Porto de Galinhas, Tamandaré and other more.

Milton, Recife is considered the most violent capital in Brazil nowadays. Sure, Porto de Galinhas rules. But I don't think Recife is suited for foreigners on vacation or for a living. (don't get me wrong, I do not recommend Rio either)

I didn't live in an apartment. I am in Brazil for about 20 days and I stayed in hotels since I moved from city to city often. I was offered apartment for short time rental but rejected it. There are tons of agencies offering apartments.

IMO Brazil has the best food and women and on top of that it's dirt cheap. I am from Eastern Europe and I've travelled all over Europe and have visited Thailand as well. As I understand Porto Alegre is 2-3 times safer than Rio and if you are careful it should be extremely safe. Don't get caught with the wrong people and don't try to live like a "baller" and don't walk in dark shady streets alone at night. You can't have everything IMO, however, given the amazing weather, food, fun people and gorgeous women, I think taking a very small risk is worth it. As they say most of the crime is getting mugged and you just hand over the money. For my 20 days in Brazil (10 of them in Rio) I have never seen any crime or problems.

I lived in the US and got robbed twice in Manhattan.

Wow.... I would never live in the NYC because it is so dangerous as I was robbed twice.

Locals would understand 70% of words if you speak it very slow.

I think $1k is fine. If you´re planning to rent an apartment (a simple one, just for you) you shouldn´t spend more than $350 monthly. Obv that, if you want to live in the bay area of a famous city, wake up every morning and see a beautiful beach through your window its gonna cost you a lot. Regular way of life here is pretty cheap if you got a wage paid in USD.

so what are the main differences between curitiba and porto alegro? which one would cater more to someone who'd like some greenery/nature outside of wherever you'd live?

No. they arent fooball fans. they're vandals.

But is true that police have proper no trainment.

I´m from Belo Horizonte (kinda close from rio and São Paulo) wich is a huge city and i´d advise poker players to go to the south part of brazil.

If you are used to live in a big city i´d tell you to go to Porto Alegre. PA is one of the big ones, you have all kinds of stuff going on (partys, etc) and the girls look simply amazing. Gisele Bundchen is from that state.

If you like a smaller town floripa is an amazing city. Gustavo Kuerten (tennis player) is from Floripa. The beaches are beautifull, and on vacation time the town gets crazy with all the tourists. Party everywhere.

If you love psychobilly music you gotta go to Curitiba, cause it is the PB capital of brazil!!! All the big Psychobilly bands have gonne there, and they have some amazing music festivals there.

I advise everyone to visit Epitacolandia. Specially for the guy who wanted "greenery/nature outside". Some people will tell you it's not a real city but it is.

As far as I understand the major ways are:
*getting married
*having a kid with brazilian woman or adopting a kid
*investment visa
*work visa.

For investment visa you have to invest $50k. I'm unsure if it can be real estate. For work visa you can probably find an agency to set up a fictional job. Getting married and having a kid seems a bit over the top and expensive.

FatKing, where are you guys living in Brazil?

Violance in Brasil is certenly overated. I was born and live now in Brasilia but I have lived in 4 different cities (including florianopolis and curitiba) and have never been mugged/robbed/have a friend or heard of someone who got kidnapped or was envolved in some big violence scene. This big violence stuff you find mostly in the big cities (sao paulo, rio de janeiro) and it's mostly on the "suburbio" like you find in US too. There are a lot of places in US in which the suburbio is very dangerous. Brasil is obviously much more violent than US in general, but it's not like you can't walk on the street or you'll be mugged. It's not like that.

You shouldn't be affraid of spending your vacation here, it's a beautifull country, with lots of amazing cities, and you just have to research first and know where you're going/be a little carefull and you'll have no problem, and it's realy worth it.

One city I really recomend you guys to come is Buzios. In "alta temporada", as we say here (I don't know how to say it in english, but it's mostly on vacation summer time, january, february [carnaval]), it's the most awesome place in the world, with the most gorgeous women, excelent food, amazing beaches, and the most awesome night at "Rua das pedras" where you'll find the best restaurants, nightclubs, bars, etc. The most "popular" beach (where you'll find tons of beautiful women) is Geriba, but it's nice to visit other smallers beaches too cuz they're beautiful.

Another great place to go, but more of a winter (july) type city, is Campos do Jordao. It has a very European, germany/dutch look and it has a great "night" too with very good restaurants and clubs and bars. I recomed you take a cold day and go to a fondue place at night, drink a good wine or a hot chocolat, it's awesome. The city has a very good vibe imo.

The south cities they've mationed already are really good as they've said, and worth going also.

btw, I just don't understand why it's good "for poker players" especifically. Gambling is ilegal here and there are no casinos and not many live games. It's a great country for anyone to come, including poker players, but has nothing to do with poker.

The only thing that happens on a more going on basis is car theft and smaller thefts. My car got robbed once and of all my friends I think a couple got theirs stollen as well. But most of the time they find the car a few kilometers away abandoned, in the worst case the insurance pays it. As for smaller thefts I never have been, but my sister has one time (I got 3 brothers).
lol, this is not standard for brasil in general. it happens a lot that they open your car and rob the stereo and leave, but to steal the whole car, having happened with you and a couple of other friends too is not standard. it's pretty rare imo
