Sorry in advance if this is the wrong forum, just wondering if any residents of Australia/New Zealand know what the deal with tax on our poker winnings is...

- are there ways around it if we do have some tax obligation?

thanks, Kaki.

For Australia, the laws are kinda fuzzy. But I can tell you there isn't a single professional gambler in the country who pays taxes on his winnings. There are some huge horse/sports gamblers with 8 figure yearly winnings as well (who aren't taxed).

NZ is supposed to be the same.

Yeah, NZ has same laws and are also very fuzzy, i've done a lot of research into it, asking my tax lecturer at uni, asking an IRD guy in my class etc, asking mates who work in tax for big 4 accounting firms etc.. The short answer is poker is gambling therefore not taxabe, although theres a lot of grey aroud it. I'm petty sure there isn't a person in NZ or Aus who has ever paid tax on poker, or any form of gambling for that matter. Therefore I wouldn't worry about it.

I remember reading about how Joe Hachem didn't have to pay any taxes on his WSOP win because he is Australian. So I assume that no, you don't have to pay taxes on poker winnings.
