I was playing poker semi-professionally before black friday and have since been playing live occasionally, but I have been back to normal people work since black friday. My wife has recently gotten a job in Chiang Mai. And we are moving there soon. I am planning on going to school there to get my masters, but I know that I will not be able to work while in Thailand. I am excited to have the opportunity to play poker online again, but I really want to know about the logistics of it all.

I know it is illegal, but I have read it is very unlikely someone will be arrested for playing online poker if you keep a low profile. A good friend is willing to stake me for online, and he lives in the states. What is the best way to get money from his account to an online site while I am in Thailand? Also, will I need a VPN to play in the country, or can I just download and play something like party on a standard internet provider?

Some other non-poker related questions. What is the internet speed like? Does xbox live work there/how well? Does netflix work? Any other standard things that we have in the U.S. that just don't work there?

Thank you a ton for your time and if there are any questions you feel need answered that I have not thought of, feel free to answer them.
you won't need VPN to play poker

internet download speeds are good. latency/reliability much worse than I am used to in europe

sorry can't help with the US related questions

I have one quick question. I am in BK at the moment, staying near Phrom Phong BTS (Imperial Queens Park Hotel), and I have tonight and only tonight free before I have to head off to KL tomorrow. What would you guys suggest.

I should also add I can't get too drunk as I have meetings tomorrow, that I am here alone on business and 26.

Thanks
No-one managed to reply to me but I guess it was a long shot. Ended up in some bar called the Penalty Spot on Sukhumvit near Phrom Pong. Was pretty quiet with a few Germans dotted around and a Filipino covers band banging out awful tunes.

I was three Erdingers deep and went outside for a smoke. A girl sits down at the table, not seeing me next to her because I was sat next to a pillar. She looks surprised and asks if she can sit down. I say of course. She was waiting for some German 'friend' to meet her. We chatted over our smokes then went inside to wait for him. 20 minutes later and he's not arrived and isn't answering his phone so she asks if she can sit at my table. She's about a 7 with a great body so I say yes.

Anyway despite me having lingering suspicions she was a working girl I carried on drinking and starting flirting with her. Ended up taking her back to my hotel and she didn't cost me a penny lol.

Anyway - just thought I'd write about my night. Onwards to KL today.

Keep the thread going strong guys - I hope to be back soon

I recently relocated to Chiang Mai as well. It took some time, but I finally got my Stars account opened. If you want to play on Stars, then you'll need to open a Thai bank account and provide further documentation to their security department as evidence that you have indeed relocated. You'll need a Thai cell phone number, too. The best way to get funds onto your site is through the 2+2 Transfer thread (learn the rules, do your research, and only work with trusted and established traders).

My apartment has decent internet, but sometimes the DSL can get bogged down when too many users are on. I don't have first hand experience, but I can't see why xbox would not work. For Netflix, use a VPN like HMA or JulyRush, but bear in mind streaming through a VPN can be painfully slow.

Are Education Visas multi entry? Are there any restrictions on the number of times you can leave and reenter in 12 months?

that depends on the embassy/consulate where you apply. around south east asia you can only get single entries. some embassies in europe issue multi entries too. you'll have to contact the embassy/consulate you want to deal with to find out if they do multis

in the end it doesn't matter since even if you only get a single entry you can get a re-entry permit from thailand after arriving (which can again be single re-entry for 1000b or multiple re-entry permit for 3800b)

multi=unlimited so (re)enter as many times as you want

Thanks for the prompt reply.

So I can arrive in BKK on a normal tourist visa, then decide to register with a language school for an Ed Visa, go to Singapore and get my Ed Visa issued, return to BKK and apply for a multiple re-entry permit? This would be exactly what I am looking for.

yes.

remember that when you arrive with the ED-visa you will get a 90-day stamp at the border and then will need to go to immigration to get extensions(need paperwork from school again for this). different immigration offices give different extensions being either 3, 6 or 9 months

i think the re-entry permit is only valid until the current extension and not the whole year so unless you plan on travelling every month it might be worth it just to get single re-entry permits when ever you need one and not the multiple one

has anyone successfully:

flown in on the 7am airasia (land 8am) to udon thani, mini buss (?) to vientiane, lodge tourist visa application same day, then pick up visa next day and leave on the 4pm airasia flight from udon to bkk?

what type of transport options are there from udon airport to vientiane? i assume i will get the lao visa at the border. how long does that normally take if you come there solo and not with a guide/group?

is the 4pm airasia flight going out pushing it? (worse case i can take the 8pm thai airways)
do the flights get full and i can leave booking to last minute or need to book in advance (wed/thu)?

thanks

there is a minibus from the airport to the border. it's 200b and the booth to buy the ticket is just when you come out from picking up your luggage.

you'll have to arrange another transportation from the border to the thai embassy

you'll get laos visa from the border, bring $US to pay for it (paying in baht is more expensive). it will take 15-30+min depending on how fast you will in forms and how many ppl are there

coming back for a 4pm might be pushing it. i went last month and was back at the airport 3-3.30pm. it's possible though (i wasn't trying to hurry as my flight was at 6pm)

i can't see the flights getting 100% full

@jspill, I emailed 2+2 to ask if they want to enable my PM's but they say I have to participate in the forums. Well wtf am I doing here? Very annoying... Anyway.. I contacted that languageschool you told me about. They offered me 180 lessons 50 minutes is 1 lesson with 1 year visa for 23000 bath. Should I take that or bargain for a better deal? I hope you read this now because I am supposed to go there at 1PM.

Also they say they have only a 1 day 4 lessons block or 2 x a week 2 lessons block. Isn't this a bit too slow paced? Or are most of them schools like this? I could take 1 hour a week private teacher with it perhaps to enhance it a bit. That will cost 500 bath an hour (50minutes) she told me. Is that a fair price? And good way to go?

i'm not back in bkk til mid-june to go along with you but it's ok as you don't pay the full fee upfront today anyway

you pay i think 15k, then the rest once the papers for your ed visa are processed, which takes 3-4 weeks, and you still start lessons. so i'll be back by the time they want the rest from you, and can hopefully get you it for 20k, which is the deal they gave us when we signed up at the same time

their website says they do 3x a week too, but maybe they can't at the mo cos of a lack of staff. personally i think it's an ok pace, the real learning comes from you applying stuff anyway, i.e. having more time to go out drinking and talk in broken thai to bargirls and taxi drivers. also i can recommend some audio tapes to listen to on the side

there are schools that you go to 5 days a week, but the course lasts only 3 months or so. i'm not sure it's a good idea to cram it into that period of time, and if you can get the visa with those
