That's true, the longer the flight the less the difference between low-cost and regular airlines. They can cut all the corners they want but they can't do anything about the price of jet fuel. Air Asia's prices on their long haul flights like KL-London are not much cheaper than any other airline's.

i am going to be landing in bkk on the 29th, prob be getting the train down to chumphon then getting the ferry to koh tao then on to koh phangan and after that samui.

was wondering if anyone can tell me what parts of the islands i should be looking for hotels on so that i am close to the action. also if anyone can recommend any good hotels for around $20 a night would be great cheers

also whats the deal with the train looking on the internet i cant book tickets until i am in bkk will this be to short notice to get good seats ?

If you are going to get the train to chumphon then it's best to get the night train and just get a sleeper car. BKK to Chumphon is about 9 hours I think. I doubt the sleepers will be fully booked ever since it's mostly poor Thais and backpackers on the train.

Really though the best way to get to Koh Tao is to just fly to Surat Thani and take the ferry from there. Unless you just really dig trains (some people do).

i dont have a train fetish or anything it was just suggested to me by a friend. also figured train would be good to see some of the countryside on the way

nothing is set in stone yet and would definately consider flying, what airlines are the best for flying there ?

Air Asia flies from BKK to Surat Thani, can't really go wrong with them. Nok Air (thai domestic airline) flies the same route but Air Asia are cheaper and less crashy.

You can also fly directly to Samui, which is slightly closer to Koh Tao, but it's a lot more expensive and if you are just going to Koh Tao anyway you might as well save the money. Air Asia BKK - ST flights start at 800 baht whereas you're paying about 4500 baht to fly to Samui with Bangkok Airways.

The ferry from Surat Thani - Koh Tao takes about 3 hours IIRC. The flight from Bangkok is only about 1 hour.

cheers for the heads up will check out air asia for sure, one other thing i am looking for hotels in bkk at the moment on agoda.com

do you know of any that wont charge a fee for bringing girls back to the room ? i know quite a few hotels do this but they never mention this on the website.

It's a craphole but it's in your price range and is girl friendly as you would expect being located above a bar full of whores.

It's on Soi Nana though, I haven't been to BKK for a few years, I don't know if Nana is any good any more. I think most people prefer Soi Cowboy but I don't know any hotels in that area.

Yes, Lessu would hate them for sure! There is a lot less leg room than on AirAsia. They are banned from flying to Europe due to safety issues like all Filipino aircraft companies. That said, I have used them a lot before, and never had any problems, expect for too little space for the legs.

ended up booking an executive suite with a friend of mine in the best comfort for $30 a night each, seems like a good deal and according to the receptionist its girl friendly. located on sukhumvit soi19 which is the area i wanted to be staying at so happy days

It does look a lot nicer but their quoted rate is 1850 baht which is more like $60 per night. Did you get the $30/night rate from Agoda?

its probably obvious to the thai regs who have been living there a while, but how do you tell the difference between SOME of the ladyboys compared to the legit women?

obviously sometimes its REALLY obvious, but the times when its not? whats your play on a night out? I asked this question a while back to a guy who has been living there for a few years on and off, i didnt get a straight answer, was more like "i can just tell"

I want to visit Chiang Mai I was wondering if you have any tips for hotel/appartement (Around 500$ a month) also, can you tell me what I CAN'T miss in Chiang mai? I know there is alot of temple, I would like to visit more than temple :P
