If you think Thailand is expensive, you're doing it the wrong way. You could start moving out of Bangkok, which probably is the most expensive "area" of the whole country. I understand that many parts of USA isn't that much more expensive, but as you said yourself, you have to take every cost into account.
Compared to my country (Sweden), Thailand is the pure nuts. I skip the freezing winter as we speak, while saving up more money than I could do at home. I live very comfortable here for $700-900 per month and I never have to cook, clean or do any laundry like I did at home.
My travel mate (american) who lives next door also loves the low cost of living here, exceptions are milk, cheese and keloggs
