Say you're a student. Unless you're like 50. Vague things like "Investor" seem way more suspect to me.

cant you just say that you are a tourist that s what your visa says, having a bank account here is so much more convenient than relying on some credit card raping you with fees on a daily basis.

I don't know about depositing yet but this is the 4th f'ing day that I have scheduled my day around waiting for pokerstars to call me at a set time and they have not called. Becoming pretty damn irritated and who the hell uses land lines in 2011

Why did you give them your landline? They don't know the difference between a land line number and a cell.

Also, that sucks, I got my call right after I told them I was currently available.

There are so many people making investments down here right now. There was even an article in the Phuket Gazette if it was legal for people without work visas to be doing day trading and it seemed like it was okay.

So my Girlfriend and I just moved to Rawai a week ago or so. I'm trying to grind it out and she's working at one of the schools. We've set up a blog if anyone is interested. (Sick picture of an octopus!)

http://phuketstonejoy.blogspot.com/

(It's also got a list of some of the prices we've paid for things if you are planning on heading this way)

Flat tire was too expensive and I knew it at the time, but I asked how much afterwards. I've heard the going rate is 150 ish? How much do you pay for DVDs? I was under the impression that in Phuket the standard price was 60. Ty

Which laptop 3G plugin do I get and where?

I walked around sukhumvit and didn't really see these things in Emporim/etc. How much should it run me? I only need it for 2-3 months.

I paid around 1.4k for AIS 3G stick which is the only provider that covers all(most) of phuket. in bkk i guess you have more service providers

it should cost under 1k per month after that

I bought one at True Shop (7.2 Mbit), it's like 600 THB /month Fair Use Policy (so unlimited 3G) well they are supposed to drop your speed to 1 Mbit if you use over 1.5Gb data or something, but I never had speed dropping although I was over it a few months ago

The stick itself was like 2.7K THB if I remember correctly

You should be able to find it at any True Shop (I got mine at Fortune IT Center)

oh forgot to mention about that limit

with AIS the "unlimited" package has 3GB of 3G per month after which you are down to 384/384kbps speed

Don't buy your stick from the company. If you buy a 3rd-party modem you can use it anywhere in the world. The company will help you set it up if you're having trouble.

$US800/month will get you a very nice place of your own in Samui. As always, its best to get here first, rent a hotel, and go house hunting. You'll get a better house in a better location at a better price.

So I if I go with a company, I should go with AIS for good coverage? If I'm travelling to Krabi/CM/Mae Sai or something, I want it to work. And it will cost about 2K for the stick, and 600B/mo for the plan?

Is there any key phrases I should use when asking for this? Will they understand what I'm talking if I ask for "wireless 3G modem for laptop". Where can I get a 3rd party one, and how much?

(In India, I traveled with a 2G stick and it was fairly usually sufficient for my needs. In India, the stick runs $30 and the prepaid unlim 2G plan about the same each month. )

Train ticket has been booked to Pak Chong (town next to Khao Yai). I'll report back when I get a chance.

i dont know if AIS has 3G in krabi. check their website for the coverage maps

the sticks are sold everywhere now at least in phuket. just ask for 3G stick and see what they have

Someone told me the Hull Consulate is cracking down on the 1 year multiple entry visas now?
Whats my best option aside from there to get one?

Would I be able to buy 30" monitors in Chiang Mai? How much? If not, how much for 24" ones? Trying to decide between shipping my current setup or buying when I get there

Thanks

Just some probably obvious, simple Visa questions:

1. If I get a 60-day tourist visa, do I still need proof that I'm leaving the country within 60-days? (I am only in Thailand at first for a week but am leaving by overland so I was told I can't just have the 30-day visa exemption as I have no proof that I'm leaving)

2. When you get a double-entry tourist visa, do you get 2x 60-day entries, or 2 separate entries within a 60-day period (total time 60-days max)? I have people arguing for both and would just like a clear answer.

3. When you arrive by overland and are given the 15-day visa exemption period, do you need proof that you're leaving within 15 days?

*Basically I have return flights to Thailand for an 80-day period, but plan on leaving the country after a week overland and returning overland about 45 days into the trip. I am hoping to enter the second time with an overland visa exemption and then fly from BKK to Myanmar, and come back a week later. If I do this I will arrive with <30 days in Thailand left and won't need a visa. However if I don't do this I'll need to have a double-entry / organise a tourist visa whilst there during the trip.
