When you get an account at a bank, do not leave without a letter in English with your name and address on it. Sometimes they charge you a small fee for this although at Kasikorn I got it for free.

A cheap Thai cell phone will work.

I know this is 'OT' but if I relocated to Canada and got my cell carrier to extend coverage for Canada, would this count?

You technically need a land line but they allowed my cell phone with a Thai number ; I wouldn't try anything beyond that. I'm 90% sure your # should start with the country code of where you're moving to.

Thanks for the information. I will be headed to Chiang Mai in a few days. Excited to hopefully get back online. Love Chiang Mai too.

If there are any couchsurfers in Chiang Mai or people interested in Couchsurfing let me know, I'm sure I'll be organizing some CS events once I arrive

Hello.I have found a house from this site http://phuketrenthouse.com/
The thing is the villa manager(i contacted house owner or sth.and after we made the agreement,he gave me her contact)wrote me and asked for 50% of the price in advance.
Isn't that way too much.Should I negotiate with them to send them less? The trip is about to take place in January,so I am not really sure what to do.Can I get scammed or sth?
Please any advice would be appreciated.

Do not get a house without seeing it in person first.

How can I see it in person, when I live half across the globe? And the thing is the house is for 12 people and we need to make some serious travel arrangements-tickets,visas etc. so it is not like I can go and find another one if I don't like it Also as far as I have searched there are not that many houses for 12ppl or more that are not very expensive(1k/day is way too much).
I think the owner is non thai(considering the person I contacted and made the agreements is the owner-his name is David McCuloch-don't know maybe he is scottish)
We are renting for 2 weeks,so it will be like holiday

Can you pay with a credit card so you can challenge the charge if it's a scam?

"On receipt of the deposit I will confirm your reservation and send you a Receipt and Booking Voucher for your records."

They basically gave me a bank account and a promise
I haven't responded yet,I wrote here first for an advice.

I don't know if this site I posted above is sth. like a travel agency or stuff.Basically I travel quite a lot and often book hotels online and I wonder if they have some kind of legitimacy or protection or sth.?

Tnx for the responses guys. The thing is a little bit more complicated.I need to make things ready in the next two weeks-house and stuff,so I can promote the whole thing. It will be like a New Year's holiday for people from my company.Like the best employee etc.
But I need to have everything set and go ,so that I can promote the whole thing. Is there any way that i can get a guranteed house(I mean I will be sure that I can go there in 4 months and everyhing will be fine)from a secured site or travel agency or sth.?
They want me to ship half the money now and I know this sux.But on the other hand I cannot promote the thing, then wait till January and then start searching for houses.Pretty f**d situation

having to pay half up front for a 2 week rent in the busiest period of the year is hardly unreasonable
Ask us about Thailand! Quote

ya it's not like it's 6 months up front or anything, for 2 weeks I see no problem with them asking for everything up front honestly.

So it is completely standart, even though I have ZERO insurance against scam?

Think about it yourself and you might have asked for both weeks upfront. 1 week is the minimum a landlord should ask.

And yes, you still can get scammed.
