did I hear someone call my name?

yes Im in Samui, have been here 18 months. love it here. all depends what you want/need in life really.

happy to help with any Q's

other 2+2ers that I know of in Samui are;
igetjokes
pokerspiv
(both are very friendly and will no doubt help with advice too - have both helped me out a lot in the past)

over the last 2 or 3 months I've also found my way into 2 well organised "home games" at a couple of hidden venues which seem friendly and fun, so obviously the poker community in Samui is bigger than just 2+2

Cant find the post now, but someone asked about CAT CDMA in Chaweng, and resort recommendations for using it?

I live in (near) Chaweng, and the CAT is great at my house. I havent tried it in many other local places, but Id be highly surprised if it wasnt as good everywhere in Chaweng. There are plenty of the red/white towers around, so you should never be far from one.

I would strongly advise neither you renting it our or anyone renting from you unless you have commercial rental insurance. I know a couple of people that have ended up in a whole heap of **** and massive disagreements after causing damage to the car in exactly this scenario.

Sorry to p1ss on your post, but I gotta say it.

Yes all sorted. Insurance is ok for renting.

Hey guys

I am thinking about going to thailand solo for 2-4 weeks, and have a few questions. Is the weather gonna be crap right now? Is it a good place to go alone or are there better countries (I am thinking about spending <$3000)? Will there be lots of tourists outside of bangkok? or will I stand out like a sore thumb as a foreveralone person? How does full moon party work? Do people party during the day and then boat back or are there hotels in the island?

Thanks for any input

Any resorts that people have tried with CAT CDMA that worked really well?
i stayed in the aumpai temple which was around 5500 baht. It is kind of ****ty in that it has no pool and not right on the beach. But it has good internet (same as their luxury) and ac. Just a basic studio but with good internet. It might be worth a look if staying short term and have your heart set on lamai. Maybe Spiv's place is better but he would know more.

- weather will be ok bit of rain and clouds some days but more than enough sun and always hot
- great place to go alone cos many tourists, people are friendly, english is widely spoken, its safe, good on that budget
- yeah tourists everywhere especially island areas, easy to get chatting to people, could try using couchsurfing.com too
- look up the full moon party dates and try to book some accommodation beforehand on the island. main ones are on koh phangan, hotels and cheap backpacker hostels everywhere

interested in visiting/staying in thailand in the near future, a couple of really basic questions

were to visit? (is there any must go places?)
how much do you expect to spend per week/month on accomodation/living expenses?
best location for the beach? same question for nightlife?

Sounds pretty similar to where I'm staying at the moment, except I'm a fair bit closer to the beach and bars. I was staying out near the temple for the last month but got sick of riding in and out on my bike all the time because I was always boozing, which is why I moved here (that and the LAN connection was a big plus, wireless just drops out too much).

Riding a bike around the Samui ring road while drunk is pretty much suicidal. That's why I usually recommend Aumpai Luxury to people who ask since the central location is good and it has everything most people ask for (pool, internet, big room, kitchen etc). There are plenty of other places around that represent much better value but they are located too far away to walk to the Lamai nightlife areas.

If you are happy with more busto accommodation there are a few 6-7k per month places located around here (Lamai T-Road near the old boxing ring) which is only 5 minutes walk from bars/beach, but they don't advertise on the internet so there isn't much to say except that there is plenty of accommodation available in that price range in Lamai if you want it, obv you won't get a pool for that price but the beach is 2 minutes away on a motorbike so it doesn't worry me too much.

FWIW the name of the place I am staying at is "Phuree House", it's located behind the Lamai View Hotel, opposite Finns on the T-Road that runs between the Outback Bar and One Way Pub.

hey, PokerSpiv whats your favorite part about living in Thailand, and what do you miss the most?

My favourite part is how cheap everything is, I have about 4-5x the purchasing power in Thailand than I do at home.

I don't really miss anything about Australia. Equal rights under the law maybe. As a Farang in Thailand you are a 2nd class citizen. I'm not a big fan of that, but everything else is much better. Being comparatively rich makes that a bit easier to deal with too.

What exactly do you mean by 2nd class citizen. It seems like if your American, they will suck up to you, but really just want your money.

what do you think "purchasing power" means? or are you from some magical fairyland where your relative wealth has no impact on your ability to get laid?

It's only 150m from the beach and the rooms have a separate kitchen/dining area which is nice. Also has a large pool.

There may be other places like it in Chaweng but as far as I know nobody on this forum actually lives in Chaweng so it might be hard to get a recommendation on places there. Personally I've been coming here for 7 years and have only been to Chaweng 3 times so I can't really help you there.

The place I am in at the moment has a LAN connection which is very reliable but apart from that is pretty busto, only 6500/month though.
Is your place available month-to-month? Other details of your place?

thanks,

You are not treated, at least overtly, as a second class citizen by bar girls and people selling t-shirts in tourist areas. But you will be by upper class Thai's and especially by the government and police etc. Thailand is for the Thai's, we are just their guests.

If it makes you feel any better they got 3rd and 4th class citizens too.

Unfortunately Thai's are very racist. They'll definitely view a white foreigner as 'better' (if thats the right word) than a black or middle eastern one. Probably even some Asians as well, depending what country they are from.

Oh hell yeah, they absolutely despise Cambodians and Burmese.

Thank you. I havent been in Lamai before but I think I will try Aumpai. 22 k baht sounds really good after staying a few months in a hotel in Melbourne
