As No3Putts said, The Siam courses are really good. I have played both of them and they are outstanding. Pretty generous fairways, but tough around the green. They were in great condition a month ago. The LPGA tournament was just played on the Old Course, they have also played the tourney on Plantation also.
If you are going in May, they have sport days with reduced green fees. You will probably pay about US $100 for everything. That might sound like a lot, but in reality you are getting green fees, cart fees, caddie fees, caddie tips and transportation to and from the course. Try that here in the US on a PGA quality course.

There are many other good courses too. Laem Chabang is about 30-40 mins from Pattaya and is also outstanding.

I have also played Burapha, Phoenix, Bangpra, St.Andrews and a few others.
They are not quite at the level of Siam or Laem Chabang, however they are a little less baht and also a great time.

The caddies there make the rounds even better, for the most part you will get a cute Thai girl who laughs a lot, knows the course, and will be able to help you read the greens. Many of them also play good golf. I have played many rounds with some of them and they are very good. Like anything else some caddies are better than others. After playing there a few times you just request the caddies you like.

If you are going to play a few rounds there, let me know Ill put you in touch with the guy I book through. He will make all the arrangements, book the courses, set you up with good caddies, provide the transportation etc. He also plays a lot, so depending on the day might play with you if you need a fourth. Highly recommended!

If you need more info let me know.
tyvm for all the info. i will be the only person that golfs regularly and my friends play here and there. which course would you recommend that is reasonably priced and moderate difficulty? ty again

Yes it is about a one hour drive from Pattaya but well worth it.

If I had to pick one I guess it would be Burapha, reasonably priced, moderate difficulty, However if you are there in May I would check out the Siam courses.
They have Sports Days ( I think Tuesday and/or wed.). Probably wouldnt pay much more than Burapha. Definitely more difficult though. Enjoy.

bought a 3.6mb 3g aircard with ais simcard. it is very very very slow, pages take around 1-2 minutes to load and mostly fail.

when i use the same simcard and tether off my iphone it is alot faster.

any ideas why?

guy at shop also told me even though its 3g, that there is no 3g available anywhere in thailand (im in phuket). prettty sure i read somewhere here it was available!?

also - what is the best simcard for phone calls + unlimited internet, as i am currently switching sims on my iphone when i want to use the internet or phone people (got a true move sim and ais internet sim).

True Move has a 599baht per month deal. Unlimited 3g, 300 min call time and 200 texts a month. Not sure if there is better but I didnt really shop around

If you get the True Move sim for your mobile make sure your phone support whatever frequency they support. My busto Nokia doesnt so I cant use it with True 3G.
When I talked to AIS they told me their 3G only works in the Siam Paragon & World Center Shopping malls. Rest of service will be edge. So stay away from that

Check your settings. With my aircard you can set it for either EDGE/GPRS (2G) or HSPA (3G). If it's set to the wrong one it will never connect to 3G and will be slow if it connects at all. Hope that made sense, it's 3am. I also believe there are large areas of Thailand with no 3G service.

True 3G is only available in Patong, Kata and Karon. Edge is not suitable to grind on.

Arriving in Bangkok at 935pm on saturday april 23. Staying for 3 weeks.

Should I book a hotel for the first night, or just find one when i get there?
Should i try and have Baht on me, or just change money or use ATM when i get there?

Thinking of staying in a furnished apartment for about $250usd for 3 weeks, I do want a nice place, cost is a little bit of a factor but would be ok with paying 500-700 to stay for the 3 weeks. Are regular hotels a better idea?

I might be able to get out of BKK for a few days, maybe Macau? full moon party? other suggestions?

Book for your first 2-3 days to save dicking around and getting lost etc in a new city, then find something your happy with for longer. Don't get fixated on events like the full moon party, if you really want to do it then fine, but there is plenty of good night life to be had in most places where tourists are in Thailand.

ATMs charge foreign cards 150 baht, so prob best to exchange a large amount, e.g. at your home airport with no commission charge on amounts over 20k is a usual deal you can find. then you also have cash on hand in the unlikely event thai officials ask for proof of having cash since you'll be getting the 30 day permission to stay stamp on arrival (rarely ever check, but officially it's required).

Having a hotel booked for the first night would make it easy to give directions to the taxi driver at the airport, just show the girls in the taxi queues the hotel address. dream hotel in sukhumvit is a usual recommendation and in the heart of town.

The $250 for 3 weeks in a furnished apartment is a great deal, much cheaper than any but the worst of hotel rooms, so I'd go for that. Make sure you get a double entry visa if you want to head to Macau. Krabi/Koh Phangan/Kanchanaburi/Lopburi/Ayutthaya/Tubing in Laos/Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia are some common places people like to head to, depending on interests

book a hotel in advance. you really want to be looking one after a long flight at 10-11pm ? easier just to hop in a taxi and go to you prebooked hotel

maybe no flat fee but how does the rate compare ?

not well, especially at airports.

imo change enough at bkk airport for the first night (food&taxi) and then the next day change more cash to baht / use your atm card whichever is cheaper.

there are huge differences between countries on using atm card or changing cash so look up the fees beforehand. changing cash in thailand costs you around 1% usually compared to xe.com rate

this.

only realised after the second month i was getting 47~ thb/£ from ATMs while the exchange rate on xe.com was 49~, thats like 4%, right?

shame it took me about 4 10-20k withdrawls to figure this out
