Hi!

Is anywone here from Koh Phangan? My gf and i are hopefully going there in 2 weeks, for 2 months probably.
How is the 3g network there? What is the max amount of tables playable without loosing connection? Are there many dropouts? Which aircard works best?

Is this http://www.phanganisland.com/index.p...ch&banner=true a reliable/secure site for renting?

Thank you very much for the help!

Some quickfire questions:

1. Best site to book flight from BKK to Phuket?
2. Best simcard deal (I'll be in Phuket mainly but probably buying it in BKK). Price etc
3. CAT CDMA seems to be the best for grinding. What is the best provider for around Phuket and how much does it cost.
4. Where can I buy a CDMA in Rawai, or should I just get one in BKK first?
5. Do the converter plugs need to be a certain voltage to stop my laptop and other items from frying?
6. Recommend a good travel book(s) to take for translating Thai etc?
7. How much money would I need a month NOT including accomodation, internet, phone, to live decently in Phuket?
Partying twice a week / Massages almost daily / Buying all my food / Eating out maybe 3-5 times a week / 20k baht on tours a week / Bike Rental / Laundry

Just need a really rough figure.

Hope someone has the time to help out, thanks.

1. best airline www.thaiair.com (check their promo page if your fly dates happen to match with their promo here: http://www.thaiair.com/offers/specia.../index_en.html )

some low cost airlines: www.airasia.com www.nokair.com www.bangkokair.com

2. for what use?

3&4. Cat is the only provider for cdma. they have got 2 offices in phuket (in central and in patong). use the patong office. another posted said they were out of CDMAs a week ago or so though. last time i checked a new CDMA cost around 5-6k and you got 3 months free use (after that 845baht/month). i dont think you can buy one from BKK since cdma doesnt work in BKK.

5. better i dont answer this

6. i use thai2english software on my computer. have found it best for translating. thai for beginners by benjawan becker is a good beginners book to start learning thai

7. partying is too wide a term to be able to put a $ figure on. one hour thai massage with no specials is usually around 300+tip, eating out for me is usually about 500 baht on average, you can rent a bike for 3000-4000/month. no clue how much using laundry services cost per month

Never been in Thailand, but I am planning my trip now, so I can help you with questions 1 and 6

1) Always check out airasia.com, they have a sale till 13. feb. If you travel 4may -31. jul you can find a lot of tickets for 20 usd per pers (one way). from BKK to Phuket. They have 7 flights per day to Phuket

yuo can as well check
http://www.bangkokair.com
http://www.bangkokair.com
http://www.thaiair.com/
http://www.fly12go.com/ch/howto/

6) I bought
Thailand's Islands and Beaches (Lonely Planet Country & Regional Guides)
The Rough Guide to Thailand's Beaches & Islands

Both were pretty cheap at amazon and both are quite similar and I have not decided which one is better (I even do not recognize which one I am reading because I switch them often). Both cover information about BKK and southern region with islands and beaches. Both includes very small vocabulary with basic words and expressions for tourists.
You still can find a lot more reliable information on internet. But they are a good backup to read when you are traveling in a airplane or bus or in the bed before going to sleep.

Lonely Planet have a little latter edition (July 2010) and seems to have a little more information about prices.

personally i wont touch 1-2-go airline. they crashed on phuket 3 years ago and like a year later were put on the EU blacklist. they were even banned from flying inside thailand for several months before.

with so many (better) options out there no reason to fly with them IMO

1-2-go are cowboys - Firefox won't even let me browse their website without safety warnings.

Ty!

Simcard, just for general use. Won't be spending a lot of time on it unless there is cheap prices to phone back to the UK (but probably planning on using skype). Just something with free minutes and txt, maybe 3g for iphone.

Cat CMDA.. I am going straight to rawai so it will be difficult getting one from those places.. do they deliver online or anything? Would love some advice on this as its a big one for me.

For books I just meant a general phrase book to carry in pocket to help with simple words and stuff.

How much would the massages cost with specials, and how much are drinks in gogos and the other stuff?

Thanks for help.

you think you will spend all your time in rawai only ? it is just a small part of phuket

from rawai central festival is about 15km away and patong 20km

dont worry, youll get a bike when you come and get to experience the whole island

Hey folks,

you have an link or some other info who rents a solid beachhouse with 4-6 bedrooms for a fair price next month or in six weeks? Nothing to fancy. Best would be if you had good xp with them yourself. Phuket Region or somewhere else where it is nice would be fine :-)
thx for help

In Bangkok, Khao San Road is the best place. Will see a few white chicks in route 66 on weekends.

In Phuket there is a few clubs where you'll find some but it's slim pickings. I think Rock City, Club Lime and Seduction are where they are most likely to be. Although a Phuket reg will probably have a better idea.

There is also the Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan and there will be tourists on the surrounding islands.

Although generally unless a girl is backpacking with a group of her friends or is a air hostess, they tend to come here with their boyfriends for the most part and you are probably better going to Sweden or Australia as previously mentioned.

Anyone here who grinds with a 3g stick/phone tethering? I want to play poker for 1 month but find a cat cdma card too expensive for just 1 month.

Some people in Bangkok tether using their mobile on the True network.

Supposedly stable within Bangkok, but not sure about other places.

Exactly my situation.

I was thinking of buying the cdma after sellign it when I go back. If the 3g is stabnle enough that'd be better obv.
