I've got a multi-entry tourist visa, came in on Jan 2nd, ends March 2nd. Where do I go for my 30day extension? im in Kata, Phuket. Can I go earlier than March 2nd and still get +30 days onto the visa?

This would take me to ~April 2nd, I leave Thailand on April 17th. What are my options for the extra 15 days? Leave country + come back...pay fines? Any other option?

border hop (re-entry) at any valid border checkpoint...
A) use the 2nd entry on your double-entry visa OR
B) just get a free 15-day non-visa entry which (in theory) gets me to the 105-day mark

Really don't want to leave the country if I don't have to, was only planning on going to Chiang Mai, Ko Samui etc :/

you will need to go to the immigration office in phuket town to get the extra 30 days

you will need: passport, 1900 baht, copy of passport, copy of visa, copy of departure card, copy of the current stamp that you got when you entered, one passport picture

there is a small booth behind the immigration where you can get the copies (they will know which one you need) and also you can get pictures from there.

you cant get the extra ~16 days you need without leaving the country. and if you do leave the country it wont cost you anything to use the 2nd entry (just make sure you use it before the "enter before" date if you decide so)

you could overstay and pay 500 baht per day but doing a visarun would be cheaper (especially if you book one now to KL and back with airasia for example) and it only takes ~8 hours door to door

edit: and yes you can go to immigration at any time and you will get the extension

doing a visarun with airasia to KL on 31st of march would cost under 4000 baht. depart 8.15am, be back 1pm as an example. theres enough time to go to mcdonalds at KL airport before you plane leaves back to phuket

Hey.

I'm going with my gf to thailand in February. We've been to BKK before, buy only stayed one night before moving on (@ koh san road). Never seen any of the tourist sites. Thinking of booking Chob's private tour. Is it a scam/ not necessary? 2000baht and nothing included but the guide, so total cost is ~4000baht for two ppl when all travel, entry fees etc is added. Read alot about scammers all over these tourist locations and just don't want to get ripped off.

Also booked a spa treatment for Valentine's day at Dahra Spa, plus dinner for two at the EatMe restaurant. Thinking of ending the night with a drink on top of the Banyan Tree hotel. Are these good/ok places to bring my gf for some romantic build up?

Excellent response. Thank you for taking the time to write that.

I guess it would be 4500 inc. taxi to airport and 15 days overstay is only 7500 (maybe 8000).

So I think I'd be happy paying the 3500 difference to save the headache of travelling.

If you want to save money you could go on the bustrip to Burma, cost 1500, about a 12 hour trip.

do you really want someone walking around with you and your girlfriend for 12 hours?

just hop in a cab to where you want to go and walk around at your own pace.

Thanks! Looked around some more now, and found a new deal for 1,000baht for 5 hours or 1,500baht for 8 hours (same sights included as 2,000baht one). Seems better and top rated at tripadvisor. Probably gonna give them a shot.

Dahra Spa is good, EatMe is supposed to be really good but haven't been, and drink on top of the Banyan Tree is good.

I think banana face is probably right, you don't really need a guide just do it yourself......

k, tx to both

1000 baht is just so little money that it seems like a waste not to do it if it offers even the slightest of value. I was mostly wondering if it was a scam/ or just the typical "tour" taking you to all their uncles and aunties selling counterfeit items.

Spoiler:
Sorry if I came over as being a prick, no pricking intended

As above, I dont see the guide adding any value to your trip.

Scams are easilly avoided (if thats what youre worried about) - if someone is hanging around the entrance to a tourist attraction and says its closed, or offers you a really cheap deal, or offers to take you somewhere else or generally approaches you and speaks english then just say no thanks and carry on. They arent aggressive, just annoying.

Taxis will try and rip you off with or without a guide, but the city is pretty safe so you dont have to worry about stumbling into the wrong neighborhood and getting held up at gunpoint.

guides are available (free and for hire) at places like Grand Palace if you want the history of the place, or you can just enjoy the architecture on your own and skip bits you find boring.

In regards to tours, I think in Thailand a lot of them offer a lot of value.

In BKK, you can catch a cab everywhere and go as you please, but there is something to be said about wondering around with a guide, and not by yourself. Particularly if you just entered the country.

With a guide, you get someone local to tell you all sorts of tidbits of info that are often interesting, or useful. If you think of a question, there is someone there to always answer it. That is pretty voluble. On your private tour, you can probably alter it to skip things and add things to the schedule.

Additionally, sometimes going on your own is not worth the hassle. I would rather do a tour to the Bridge and Tiger temple than to try to do this via buses, cabs, etc - or to ride my motorcycle as navigating is a PIA. There is something to be said for showing up at 8am at the hotel lobby and not having to think about anything - especially after 20 hour flight.

Since a lot of tours are about 1-2000 baht, I think they offer pretty fair value. If you are completely enamored with something you can always come back to it the next day.

I usually steer people away from tours, but if the markup is minimal and logistics are a hassle, they are a pretty good option. A lot of tours - especially outside of BKK - fit this description.

If you stay in hostels/guest houses, this may or may not be a problem. These are low-end accommodations, generally old and dingy, with standard low-end problems. You just never know.

I generally stay in hotels that are about 1000baht/night (after some sort of deal/negotiation), and I have never seen any signs of bugs/etc. The hotels generally look excellent. I generally try to see the room first before committing to the charge, unless I know the place is good.

One time I got stuck at a guest house in Chiang Mai, in a room right above the kitchen, and the bathroom had big roaches coming in and out. I switched the room. The other two times I was in small-city hotels and they both had geckos running about. To be honest, geckos seem a lot better than bugs/spiders, and in some ways interesting, so to me they are not nearly as big of a deal. Plus, they eat bugs and spiders so chances are that the place doesn't have a big/spider problem. (Or maybe the geckos go there precisely because the place has a big/spider problem?)

All in all, one disappointing thing about Thailand is that there are too many people on so little land. Jungle and unexplored tropical paradise is for the history books. You can still find patches of real jungle, but the real jungle has been destroyed a long time ago into pasture and farm land. Very rarely will you see any wild animals anywhere. You will see plenty of cattle, chickens, dogs, goats and sometimes donkeys, but you should consider yourself very lucky if you ever see a wild animal in Thailand. Sure, they are there, but not that many. I can go 30 miles outside of DC and see more wild animals than in Thailand (deer, bear, mostly). I am not sure about snakes, as I never do any serious trekking or anything like that...

OK, so this is my long answer to say 'don't worry about it', unless you are trying to do a very budget backpacking trip via hostels/etc.

Hey chaps, I'm after some suggestions if you don't mind.

Want to get my Easter trip booked but my dates fall over songkran which tilts the **** out of me in every possible way. Going for 12 days in total and will do a week in Patts after songkran. Has anyone got any suggestions where a bah humbug can avoid getting a soaking for 5 days or so?

Don't want to do Chiang Mai been a couple of times, Bkk might be a possibility but please suggest something fun away from lower suk etc. Just done Laos so that's a no, same same Cambodia. Connecting flights to Hanoi and Saigon are terrible times so that's out.

Am struggling to come up with any ideas apart from maybe Macau or Beijing, thoughts on those or any other suggestions?

Ty in advance......
