Sorry Spiv, I missed this.

Im heading back to the UK this week for a month, so Im waiting until I get back. First thing on my to do list when I do.

If you find any more info or advice between now and then please let me know.

But Im 99% convinced this is the right thing to go for. Im sick of the internet drop outs lately, and its costing me a small fortune.

Has anyone here tried the CAT CDMA 3G yet? They have it here in Chiang Mai. I'm guessing it should be a lot better for grinding

I bought CAT CDMA about 4 days ago. Live in Lamai, Koh Samui. I'm very happy with it, had it running nonstop without any disconnections so far. Download speed varies from about 50-180kb/s, but as said, the stability is perfect when grinding.

Got the VW140 EV-DO modem. About 3500 tbh for the modem, and another 850 a month, or something like that.

which one is the best day spa in Bangkok? I set more value on a nice jacuzzi, sauna, pool, steam and relaxation room than on massage treatments.

I think CAT CDMA is deteriorating here in Phuket anyway. I have had more and longer disconnections lately with it anyway.

Where should I go if I want to drive to a place where I can do some snorkeling from Chalong circle(not too fare)? There is some stuff to see on the right side of Kata beach. Anywhere else I can try?

for kanchanaburi taking a gf should definitely do erawan falls as mentioned, 7 flights of swimmable waterfalls as you hike up a small mountain, very romantic and cool. but make sure you get there early, they start closing it from the top about 3 and it's all closed by 4.30pm iirc. on kanchanaburi main road there's a bunch of bars, including a good live reggae spot and a 10 baht whiskey bar

Healthland is really popular. Never been to one but their website says they have all of that stuff.

I'm planning a poker trip to Chiang Mai. What would you say is the best district to live in. Here is what I am looking for in order of importance.

1. Internet connection
2. low Rent prices
3. Convenience(mostly walking distance)

To all the people in Chiang Mai. How bad of a problem is the internet there? Where would you recommend living?

Depends on what you want. I like it a bit quiet and live in Hang Dong as do a few other poker players, but it's 15 minutes to the moat.

If I liked going out a lot stay closer to the moat or on Nimmarnhemin Rd.

Close to Chiang Mai University is also a decent area. Lots of food and college girls.

Almost everyone here has a motor bike (100 usd/month plus gas), so it really doesn't matter where you live, within reason.

If I were to go without a bike, I'd go Nimmarnhemin Rd as i really don't like the moat area.

AJackson, yeah I like it quiet too. in the hang dong area. Do you live in a house or condo? And how is the Internet situation in that area? Any suggestions on weather I should get a house or condo. I am planning to stay there long term. And thank you for the info. Really appreciate it. I'm a newbie to Thailand and to traveling abroad.

I have the MiFi. The stability is great. The speed is decent.

For anybody that uses this here is a 'secret' otherwise unaccessible options page for your mifi: http://192.168.1.1/adv802.html

Its the only way you can enable key based encryption. A huge omission from the default options they give you. You can also change the max number of devices that can connect, the transmission power and some other more advanced wifi performance settings.

Trix, where in Lamai are you? I'm guessing there's going to be a difference in reception from the hill areas vs the beach area. How many bars do you get?

Hey everyone.

I am thinking about moving to Thailand next year.
Could you name me/give me links to the best websites of real estate agencies to have an idea of what could be the prices of the rents in different regions of the country? Some webs with local prices, not some tourist swindle!

Thanks in advance! =)

Try not to use an agent, especially one with a website geared towards foreigners - you will pay more than you need to, possibly a lot more than you need to.

prakard.com is a classified type site that is mostly used between Thai's. It is the best place to get a fair price imo and certainly has a large selection.

You exactly understood what I was looking for, and what I was trying to avoid though.

Ill check prakard.com. Thanks for it

If anyone else has "local friendly" websites/advices, I would be interested.

Thanks!

@BKK 2+2ers...

i assume there are many "nice" Areas to stay in BKK...as long you are not way off BTS/MRT you can reach any destination quite cheap and "quickly" ...

Anyway:

Is there an Area in BKK which is "outstanding" to stay..or even an area where most of the 2+2 ppl stay?

what are your opinion's on staying at "On Nut"...?

i know this might depend on many reasons of each individual..(where to stay, how much u want to spend etc)...

maybe anyone can give a "price range" for a 2bedroom(1 bedroom/1 living room) condo/apartment?

looking so far on these sites: http://en.9apartment.com/ http://bangkok.craigslist.co.th/apa/

might be a little bit early, but want to gather some info in time. thx for help!

There are a bunch of areas that suck and a few areas that don't suck. There isn't really a Beverly Hills of Bangkok imo.

I believe a lot of 2+2ers are in the Sukhumvit area, which I have read described in the NY Times as an 'affluent' area of Bangkok. The Thong Lor/Ekkamai area of Sukhumvit is probably the most desirable, followed by Asoke.

On Nut is part of Sukhumvit but its way out there. Not a lot of foreigners living out there and to me it has somewhat of a busto connotation. If you are looking to live cheap you could do a lot worse - it is the last stop on the BTS. Bang Na is further out on Sukhumvit and would probably suck to live in but also probably really cheap.

Standard is probably 20k THB/month. You can get one for half that or less and you can get one for double that or more, depending where and how nice etc.
