Normal english but slowly and keeping it simple.

Ex to a hot fruit seller :
Hey honey pie could you please give me one kilogram of fresh rambutan?

becomes :
Sawatdee kap, one kilo of rambutan please, kap.

I'm lucky in that I've been able to talk to Americans on an almost daily basis while in SE Asia. I still find myself saying things like "where you go?" to other farang. My friend here (American) lives in Buenos Aires and speaks with a Spanish accent when he talks to Thai or Lao people in English.

bit of a bump

currently in BKK for 2 months, was wondering a good place to buy high quality fake watches?

thats an oxymoron. My advice, take a bus to Malaysia go to china town and you'll see more fake watches then u'll ever need for cheap.

It looks like I'll be staying in Laos for a while. I started an "ask WhoIam anything about living in Vientiane" thread in the travel forum if anyone is interested. Drop me a line if you come here for a visa run or something and I'll show you around.

I just came back from the ladyboy bar in Nana Plaza. There was this one which looked like Jennifer Love Hewitt and had the best [censored] ever. She spoke quite good English as well. I bought her a drink but told her that I had no sexual intentions at all. I just wanted to talk and learn more about the ladyboy culture. She kept insisting we went to the hotel upstairs and I just had to try a ladyboy. I kept saying I was tired and kept asking her questions like are you post op or pre op, how many customers do you get a day, etc. She got kinda annoyed and kept on asking why won't I leave with her. I then said I really think you are beautiful but I just want to talk. In the end, she kept quiet and looked really sad. I feel kinda bad. I told her I would come back and buy her another drink another day and left.

FAO Degen, great GREAT post. I'm trying to read it all but more pages get added than I read everyday ;P

I'd looked into this previously but some advice would be great. How far would 650k THB stretch to? I figure I could live on roughly 44k THB a month or is this being pessismistic. I know you said a little higher than that?

I know its all subjective but really I want to know how quickly you blow money over there as I'd have a steady income but no more than $1000 a month.

Keep the good work up anyway!

It all depends where you want to live and what you want to do. If you want to live in a nice Bangkok apartment, go to good clubs all the time, and bang hookers every night, then $1k/month isn't going to cut it. If lounging by the beach and drinking at local bars is more your thing, that's certainly doable. Or do what I did which is move to Vientiane where $1000 will let you do anything you want. I personally prefer it to Thailand but I think most here would disagree.

Everyone I've talked to has raved about Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng in Laos. Flights from Thailand are cheap and bus/train travel is practically free.

I am running outta money in BKK because I can't beat 50NL for any decent ammount. I spent roughly 30k BHT a month here. Is it any cheaper over at Laos? Got reliable internet connection?

one would think that if you can't beat 50NL, there are probably easier things to do to increase your standard of living than move countries.

Laos is like Thailand except it is much cheaper and the people are friendlier imo. Check out my thread in the travel forum.

If you are looking to stay in Asia, I'd suggest East Timor (Indonesia area) or Solomon Islands.

If you are looking for cheapest in general, I'd suggest Malawi or Somalia.

To put things in prospective, Thailand's GDP per capita is about 10x higher than these countries. Thus the piss poor economy suggests much lower standard of living. So, I'm guessing you can get by on a few hours of 10NL
