It shouldn't be too hard to find a place unless you're really picky. For 10k it obv wont be super nice, but you can find something that is liveable for sure. I recommend taking a look inside the "Chaofa Thanee" complex on Chaofa West. I used to live there in a half-decent 2br house for 12k and there are quite a few smaller/cheaper houses inside this "gated" community and there is a shared pool. It is opposite the main TOT office (about 1km past Chalong temple coming from chalong circle).

PS. there are also an appartment-type building on the Big Buddha road with a pool on the roof. I believe the appartments are exactly 10k but its possible thats for longterm leases. I dunno for sure.

If that's the case then it's no more difficult to do the same thing in Samui.

trying to get 3bb premier package as main internet is still my advice though having cdma and needing to use it has been more frequent lately. 3bb apparently changed owners again (according to thaivisa) and is named triple net now and have been worse in the last 6 months than last year when it was very reliable.

I use 3bb for downloading stuff. I get about 380kb/s with my 3.5mbps connection and use it for grinding mainly but lately they have had a lot of outages and then i will connect with cdma which has better latency to poker sites I use but much worse download speeds (from my place i get max 75kb/s though you can get 200+ if you have optimal location).

also worth noting is that at least with windows 7 if I get disconnected with either of my connections connecting with cdma takes only couple of secs so if your site is fast enough to recognize the new connection you will get back to the hand you were playing unless there were only few secs left. I tried switching around the internets on ftp and it was fast, party is worse.

other options i havent tried are the cat adsl but it is not available everywhere afaik and then TOT standard service which should be available everywhere though no one has ever said anything good about them.

rutang was talking about TOTs new fiber service that they got to the mansion before they moved out but as for reliability I cant say yet. it is also much more expensive than the services i have now

3bb premier package 3.5/1mpbs 1167baht/month
cdma "3.1mbps" 845baht/month
thanks!! i will look into phuket and samui. i am really excited! i don't care about download speed. i just want reliable connection for grinding.

i only wish i was into asian women, then i would never leave. but fml, i like blonde hair and blue eyes

What are your internet options in Chiang Mai ? Is the Cat CDMA the best option there too ?

Update for CAT users or prospective users

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/...st__p__3661327

CAT is now selling the alcatel mifi 2200 for 8k baht. This can run up to 5 pc connections and would be an amazing option as a backup for a grindhouse.

The standard USB dongle (EC150) is now only 2900k baht.

http://www.thailandcdma.com/index.ph...d&productId=51

So basically to get yourself set up with a CAT CDMA connection which works almost anywhere outside of Bangkok or Pattaya you are only looking at 3000 baht initial outlay and 850 baht per month.

while wolfram came to thailand and spent most of his time in his room on AIM, i'd consider other options. I guess it's worked out for him just fine, but most of us get out and do things....

Internet on Samui is fine if you are with the right company, it's just that obviously since Samui is a smaller place with less places to stay you'd have to look a bit harder.

Igetjokes is still on Samui grinding afaik, be interested to hear his experiences with internet access.
I have 3bb's Premier connection here, and its been fine. I haven't had a disconnect for 6 or 8 weeks now. I think most of the outages have come due to storm-related blackouts, which suck but there's not much you can do really.

Jimmyhat1000 is grinding on CAT CDMA in the same building as me with excellent results I believe; good reception and no dropouts. I think the only advantage CAT has here is that it works during the blackouts, so if the power suddenly goes out you can grind as long as you have battery power in the laptop. Personally I just stop playing if a storm is passing overhead and haven't had a problem.

Pattaya does not really have a usable beach compared to the wonderful beaches here in Phuket.

Jomtiem, or anywhere 30 mins south of Pattaya. I doubt I could live in Pattaya itself anyway, it would be too much after a while, besides I personally hate beaches,

Define usable? Pattaya has plenty of beaches. They may not be as nice to look at as Karon beach but they are fine for swimming and they cool the place down which are the 2 main reasons for living near beaches imo.
