Thanks for the offer. I do appreciate it, but don't need it.

I am looking to be able to deposit in the future to take advantage of deposit bonuses and, of course, be able to get money on there should I need it. More of a looking ahead kind of thing.

My friends aunt owns an internet cafe with computers for gaming and really cheap rates. It is next to the coca restaurant across the street from the Telecom building.

Are there hotel rooms in Bangkok that rent by the hour, in close proximity to the bars/nightlife?

Ask any of the girls you pick up, they will know where the short time rooms are. There are plenty...........

Ok good to know.. I was of course only inquiring as I have haphazard sleeping patterns!

Another question... the travel guide recommends www.letapartment.com/ to find serviced apartments over 1 month in Bangkok... however this thread seems to conclude its better to just turn up and stay in a hotel until you find somewhere. So which is it? Is committing to an apartment from that site before leaving a bad idea? And what's the best way to find an apartment once you get there and avoid getting ripped off?

Also, how obtrusive are staff usually in serviced apartments e.g are you allowed guests, do you have to sign in/sign out etc? I've stayed in a service apartment before with Asian staff and they never left me alone.

Just stay at a hotel for a couple nights, during those few days checkout a handful of places you're interested in staying in....choose one

probably most optimal

My friend is a hairdresser - well trained in the UK and very capable. Would there be anywhere in Phuket he could get a good paying job or might there be enough interest for a good freelance hairdresser?

doubtful. most people here weren't fond of the mention of a $25 haircut when some 2p2 asked if anyone was interested in his fiance's service while they were here. not sure what demographic would have interest considering even the most BOC community there isn't

edit: tourists prob get their hair did before they go on vacation anyway

Hairdressing is something Thai people can do, so your friend would be competing against people making <500 THB/day. My girlfriend gets her hair done in a salon for a couple of hours every other day for about 200 baht a pop.

To earn a western wage in Thailand you have to bring skills that are outside the scope of Thai people (a lot of which is English-language based such as teaching or hotel management), or use the internet for a home-based business/gambling.

Your friend is in the same position as the guy who posted here asking if he could work as a bouncer in nightclubs - they have skills which are readily found here, and nobody will pay western prices for a service they can easily find for Thai prices.

For reference a men's haircut in Thailand costs 100-150 baht which is $2-3.

If your friend knows a lot about hairdressing and wants to live in Thailand then he should open his own shop that employs Thai hairdressers.

If there's 1 skill that is in drastic shortage among Thais it's business management.

now this is the truth. of course, if there's one skill that westerners coming to thailand think they have, and are lacking... it's business management. it's easy to see how poorly run every business over here is, but that includes nearly all the falang businesses. if the friend was skilled in running a business, it's doubtful he'd be working as a hairdresser.
