True anyone can learn. But I think the main issue here is you havent even started and your talking about getting a gig somewhere. You should just be thinking about learning to mix. Most people get a pair of decks and stop using them after a year or two. They can mix a bit from this experience, but in no way ready for playing out infront of a crowd. Go get some decks, practice none stop for the next 12 months, record some promo mixes to give to bars/clubs, and if your any good you might get a shot.

Oh and I youtubed both of them guys. Looks like they produce music too, but pretty poorly.

Based on my limited experience I can say that rocking the party isn't all that difficult. Although I bet that actually getting paid decent money at a decent venue is probably extremely difficult (partly of course because like I said, rocking the party isn't all that difficult so obv lots of people will be able to do it).

Anyways, based on what I've heard around the better clubs in CM I've definitely caught myself thinking "whoa, how did the DJ do that?" numerous times so yeah, there are talented DJs and untalented DJs... but at the end of the day both DJs can push the ****** button to play Lady Gaga and make the girls go wild, it's not too complicated.
LOL, the guy who wrote that article is a complete idiot and has clearly only dj'd at crappy chessy nights.

Yeah any dj can press a button and play lady gaga for the girls, but the difference is the good one's won't and the bad one's will.

Most of the dj's in thailand arn't anything special, so the chances of landing gigs are alot higher. In the UK it's a hell of alot different. Djing is seen as more of an art, and many dj's produce music too. Until you've been to see the very best you can't really understand why djing is an art.

Oh and the book 'how to dj properly' will teach you everything you need to know about the subject.

But if you want to play out in club's you've got to be able to be alot more creative on the decks with your mixing to impress a promoter and stand out from the other dj's. This will take alot of time and practice.
If i was going to play out rock music, mixed with some house and rap I'd be creating special re-edits of my fav tracks so they have more bass and a consistant kick drum so I can mix perfectly. I'd also probably learn to scratch so I can drop tracks in with some impact and also a very entertaining way. You could play alot of breaks music that has alot of rap/soul/funk vibe to it, which has a very party atmosphere and easy to mix once you've learnt how to beat match and blend tracks.

Something like what this guy plays:

http://soundcloud.com/the-captain/th...-supermix-2010

Indie dance music has been big for the last 5 years or so. With dj's/producers like Simian Mobile disco merging lines between rock, house and techno.

One of the best that mixes up all kinds of genre's, but heavily on the hip hop, funk, soul side is Dj Shadow. But to learn to mix like him could take a life time.
sounds like good advice. i told you what kind of music i want to play. i did not "tell you about music". i said something about night parties in new orleans which are unlike anything else i've seen in the US. i'm sure you're a totally competent DJ.

it sounds like what that guy is doing is fairly involved. he samples everly brothers "cathy's clown" around the 28:24 mark (i fast forwarded). that's exactly they type of song i'd like playing. anyways, this stuff is very complex and chopped up. this guy is less like a DJ and more like whatever Girl Talk thinks he is.

anyways......this isn't the Ask us about DJing thread....so i'll stop derailing.

"COMPLIMENTS: One of the best things about DJing is when you play a really kickass song and people come up to you dancing, going "I love this song!" You get all proud and pretend you wrote it. You're like, "Thanks!" Yeah, I downloaded "Youth Gone Wild," I rule. It's like being told your air-guitar skills are ****ing SICK."

eh....diplo is awesome and famous. he might not play only house and techno, but he is a DJ. i could dance to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2nmgcVbfKE or this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBcd5...eature=related what's not to like?

i downloaded traktor pro. good idea? whatever hardware i get, hopefully it doesn't take up much space.

so if my main goal is to just have a good time and get girls dancing (in thailand), then why should i care? i should obviously try to do a very good job. but the fact is only pro DJs are likely to get pissed off if i'm not doing something in particular. most people know nothing about DJing and just want to dance. pressing play is definitely not my plan. derailment continues....

thanks for the book rec. i've already downloaded one book so it's not like i'm not trying.

No probs, also 'last night I saved a DJ saved my life' is worth a good read. But is more about the history of djing, which helps to appreciate it.

Not sure what this has to do with Thailand, I am sure there are facebook pages where you can argue about what kind of music is the most awesome.

right this now has nothing to do with Thailand.

cliffs notes to last 10 posts: being a DJ is next to impossible and the Bed Supperclub is the equivalent of Madison Square Garden for DJs the world over. so my plan would be to 1) learn how to dj 2) play at smaller clubs. if it happens, i may post about it.

Special about Thailand: All farangs are DJs or wannabe DJs?

Why not start a "ask us about being a DJ" thread instead of spamming here?

Hey guys,

I heard about this cool thing called Thai boxing. I want to go to thailand and be a Thai boxing instructor but I have no experience. I do like watching kung-fu movies though.

What are my chances?

There is a clothing market close to Central Festival which might be a lot more fun for a girl then a boring mall, which one can find in all countries. I think it is mostly open on Sundays. I do not remember the name but it is on the road towards big Buddha from Central Festival, on the left side of the road. Lol. not very helpful this, but I sure someone else can direct you better if your GF is interested in going there.

i'm not saying i want to join the NBA. i want to play music for other people to dance to, that's all. i'm capable of that. your comparison assumes i know nothing about music (not true).

i've learned that bed supperclub is far from a viable option. i'll end that "dream" and try not to spam anymore about the dark, futile arts of DJdom. i'm just glad my parents weren't DJs or DJ idolizers, because then i might be working as a janitor at Trader Joes (if i had not already killed myself after wallowing in all that pessimistic unattainability).

sorry for the derail. i just wanted to play tunes, man!

i think you are talking about the night market. it is located one set of lights south from central festival on chao fa west. they are open from like 4-5pm until around 11pm on saturday and sunday evenings

uh true. i can't DJ yet. rub it in why don't you! it also assumes that i know nothing about music (not true). it also assumes that it's some very futile ridiculously impossible thing to learn...yet we've heard from two pro DJs in a day. i don't have that special sauce.

i'd like to ask a Thailand related question. hopefully i haven't eliminated all goodwill after all this DJ talk.

i've been looking at condos in bangkok at sites like bkkcondos.com and housecondobangkok.com. i'm wondering if the prices listed are generally set in stone, or if they're probably inflated. if they're inflated, how much are they likely to be inflated by and should i expect some of them to lower their prices?

no they're not. it varies a ton as to how long you can get them too

Judging by a quick look at the bkkcondos.com site, the prices are inflated by around 50-100% compared to the going rate for a 1 bedroom apartment in BKK.

Obviously it's hard to tell what the quality of the apartments is like from a couple of photos, but for 30,000 baht/month for a 1brm place you'd be wanting something pretty balla, whereas that seems to be about the minimum price on bkkcondos.com, and they go up from there.

thanks. that's really good news. so a place like below should maybe be $700-$1000USD instead of $1350? i hope, it looks awesome. i just hope most of the places are willing to go lower and they're expecting me to bargain.
