If i was going to play out rock music, mixed with some house and rap I'd be creating special re-edits of my fav tracks so they have more bass and a consistant kick drum so I can mix perfectly. I'd also probably learn to scratch so I can drop tracks in with some impact and also a very entertaining way. You could play alot of breaks music that has alot of rap/soul/funk vibe to it, which has a very party atmosphere and easy to mix once you've learnt how to beat match and blend tracks.
Something like what this guy plays:

Indie dance music has been big for the last 5 years or so. With dj's/producers like Simian Mobile disco merging lines between rock, house and techno.
One of the best that mixes up all kinds of genre's, but heavily on the hip hop, funk, soul side is Dj Shadow. But to learn to mix like him could take a life time.
sounds like good advice. i told you what kind of music i want to play. i did not "tell you about music". i said something about night parties in new orleans which are unlike anything else i've seen in the US. i'm sure you're a totally competent DJ.
it sounds like what that guy is doing is fairly involved. he samples everly brothers "cathy's clown" around the 28:24 mark (i fast forwarded). that's exactly they type of song i'd like playing. anyways, this stuff is very complex and chopped up. this guy is less like a DJ and more like whatever Girl Talk thinks he is.
anyways......this isn't the Ask us about DJing thread....so i'll stop derailing.
"COMPLIMENTS: One of the best things about DJing is when you play a really kickass song and people come up to you dancing, going "I love this song!" You get all proud and pretend you wrote it. You're like, "Thanks!" Yeah, I downloaded "Youth Gone Wild," I rule. It's like being told your air-guitar skills are ****ing SICK."
