Have anyone look into the educational visa here in Phuket? Is it possible to study something else than language, like thai boxing or something else cool?

thats how it was when i worked as a dj, hopefully some can chime in on local variations in bkk.
thanks man. that sounds like a lot of partying. what if i was to offer to do it for free? as long as they thought i was decent, would that increase chances a bit?

very wrong there. no respectable dj works out what he is going to play and in what order to mix it before a gig. might aswell put on a cd then. you read the audience and go with the flow.

its probably not too hard to get a gig in a small club tho. just dont expect to earn any money from it or to be playing infront of an audience (that you like)

probably a little bit. money is not the concern in the beginning. u want to increase your experience gradually. so, start really small. afterparties are perfect. ppl are happy and drunk/drugged and care less. get to know the djs, bring a small bag of records, cds, whatever you use. ask the dj to put your records there while you are at the club. if he asks, say you played at a friends party or something before you came there. make sure you check out the booth. do you know the console? if not, watch the dj very closely. where are the different knobs? can you see all things properly? do you have a small flashlight with you? (you should have). u must have your own headset. are there other dsp's connected to the console? what are they? does the club have a sound engineer present? if so, what are his responsibilities? is the monitoring ok? if not, can you mix without external monitoring?

if all these things are ok, and you still feel confident you can make the crowd happy, hang around the booth. Dont ask for a session, just hang. a dj might not show, a dj might get sick or whatever. if something like this happens, step in and say you can spin a few tracks. or wait for them to ask. repeat this step at many clubs over a very long time. you will get a chance at some point.

obv this strategy only works at small clubs pre or post peak hours.

nhourmess is correct. the most important is to know exactly what style the crowd likes long time before you play (i mean days). but this is only a general frame. what you play must be decided by the hour, mood of the crowd, what the dj before you played, etc. this really means that its not possible to play a long session without a huge collection of media present. its just not possible to make the proper adjustments with a few records.

i remember someone was talking about being a DJ in bangkok in this thread or the chatter thread. recently, i've been thinking that is something i'd really enjoy doing since a) it would give me an excuse to learn something new, and b) it would be really fun to play what i consider good music for other people.

so, how hard is it to get gigs? even if you're not a DJ, i'd be interested in how hard you think it would be. how difficult would it be to play at a place like the bed supperclub on a regular basis? (i see they have 3 resident DJs every week.)

i basically have no experience, but think my musical taste is different from most DJ/clubber types so that would be either an asset or a negative. i don't know. (i'd play bands like animal collective, modest mouse, old 50s rock like the everly brothers, psych, swamp rock, with a healthy amount of rap thrown in....overall i'd try to keep things "dancey"). when i went to clubs in tokyo they just played the most standard american hip hop songs and i felt ridiculous getting down to that kind of music - but thats probably what a lot of people want....

any info about DJing in bangkok would be cool!
Mate the fact you've never even used a pair of decks, hardly into clubbing and want to play rock music, means you haven't got a cat in hells chance of getting a gig anywhere apart from some crappy little bar that doesn't care.

For starters most djs play dance music, most clubs/bars want dance music, and if they don't care too much about what kind of music the dj plays they will probably be some chessy bar that plays crap chart music all night.

Before you can even think about djin in a bar/club you should get a decent set up at home, one that is similar to most club/bar set ups. So something like a pair of pioneer cdj1000's and a pioneer djm 800. Practice on them for the next 2-5 years, spending a hell of alot of time collecing music you think will get a dance floor going and playing at friends parties or maybe down your local bar infront of friends.

If your really detmined to play rock music, you might as well mix through your laptop, because unless your going to be a sratching wizard your not going to be able to beat match band music, and some software will give you more abilty to mix things up more creatively. I'd use something like Ableton or Traktor.

To play at somewhere like the bedsupper club you'll need to be doing this for at least 5-10 years and have experience of playing in other clubs, and you'll have to be very good.

Sorry to dampen your dream, but you have to be realistic. Djing isn't easy, and like anything it takes alot of time, practice and experience to get good at. You could probably get some decks today and be playing some little bar in 12 months time. But don't expect to be playing to big crowd in decent club/bars for many years to come, and thats only if your lucky. I suggest you go clubbing to proper clubs and see some big dj's, this might put things into perspective for you.

I know when I go back to thailand i'll be trying to look for the odd gig in bangkok. Somewhere like the 808 or bedsupper club would be a dream for me to dj at. But i've been djing 10 years, play house and techno and have good contacts in thailand from djing in phuket last time I was living there. So a gig like that to even me seems only slightly possibly and only if I get very lucky. I'll probably be aiming to play at some of the lesser known clubs 1st and see if I can build from there.

Also,

gotta chime in on the DJing discussion here:

http://www.viceland.com/int/v11n5/htdocs/hey.php

Based on my limited experience I can say that rocking the party isn't all that difficult. Although I bet that actually getting paid decent money at a decent venue is probably extremely difficult (partly of course because like I said, rocking the party isn't all that difficult so obv lots of people will be able to do it).

Anyways, based on what I've heard around the better clubs in CM I've definitely caught myself thinking "whoa, how did the DJ do that?" numerous times so yeah, there are talented DJs and untalented DJs... but at the end of the day both DJs can push the ****** button to play Lady Gaga and make the girls go wild, it's not too complicated.

very good article. got to love viceland. i had no idea DJing was such a snob-filled affair. i just want to play some tunes man!! if i play interesting music and am able to do dj well enough to get people dancing...have a clue what i'm doing...willing to work for free...i think it would be a fun thing to do.

guess it just won't be at the bed supperclub.....maybe in twenty-five years when i've acquired an adroit command with a fair dose of club savvy.

i'd like to be like the Major Lazer DJs. they mix rock, rap, baile funk, tracy chapman and make it danceable yet psychedelic. that's what i'd like to do. i'm not going to be playing techno. i might play house but not only house. that might be what nightclub goers crave. but people also like rock/rap they can dance to.

go to new orleans and you'll see "dance parties" everywhere that play dance rock (50s style) mixed with old school/hardcore rap mixed with psychedelic stuff. it's a magical combination that can get people dancing. you could listen to techno all your life and understand how to dance to this music as well. it's also more fun and less sterile imo. that's what i want to do.

tell that to phaseone and diplo. the only difference is they know how to DJ--a process that can be learned if you've got good musical taste and the desire to do it.

Mate, you really don't have to tell me much about music. I like many kinds of genre's, and have dj'd nearly all of them. If you want to be a basic dj that doesnt really mix, just plays one track after the other and you know your music well, I'm sure you'll be able to get a party going and probably educate a few people too. But if you want to play out in club's you've got to be able to be alot more creative on the decks with your mixing to impress a promoter and stand out from the other dj's. This will take alot of time and practice.
If i was going to play out rock music, mixed with some house and rap I'd be creating special re-edits of my fav tracks so they have more bass and a consistant kick drum so I can mix perfectly. I'd also probably learn to scratch so I can drop tracks in with some impact and also a very entertaining way. You could play alot of breaks music that has alot of rap/soul/funk vibe to it, which has a very party atmosphere and easy to mix once you've learnt how to beat match and blend tracks.

Something like what this guy plays:

http://soundcloud.com/the-captain/th...-supermix-2010

Indie dance music has been big for the last 5 years or so. With dj's/producers like Simian Mobile disco merging lines between rock, house and techno.

One of the best that mixes up all kinds of genre's, but heavily on the hip hop, funk, soul side is Dj Shadow. But to learn to mix like him could take a life time.
