Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

Great thread Degen, et all...Thanks for answering questions...

I've never been, thinking of taking a trip, had been thinking about it before this thread.

1. Is it hard to find hotels with AC? Is AC standard or rare in Thailand? Atleast a window unit. That would be a must for me.

2. Ever been hospitalized for getting a hold of some spoiled food? You say the best food is street food, is most of it safe to eat?

AC is everywhere. Totally easy to find places with AC even on small islands like Koh Phi Phi. You could also get a room with an electric fan and toilet that requires a bucket of water to flush. Both ends of the spectrum are available. You could probably spend $180 a night if you wanted to on a room or $15 a night. Variety dude.

Regarding food. I usually would get some digestive troubles for a bit after being in Thailand for a week or so. After that I didn't have too many issues. I got food poisoning only once in 2 years. About my average for America come to think of it. Thai's eat at food carts all the time so it is good stuff, high turnover, fresh food usually. Tasty and cheap too. Food cart pic below. Fried stuff on a stick = tastyness.

One thing before liftoff.

When you guys traveled around Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui and what not. Did you just stay at hotels or did you find other places that were better?

Also what is the best way to travel around phuket. Our trip will be Bangkok 2 days in the beginning > Phuket 1 week probably > Koh samui 1-2 weeks > Bangkok/Pattaya/whatever the rest. How do you travel around phuket to krabi and the other places. Koh samui you probably just take a boat or something to the nearby islands?
Pick up a lonely planet guide. They have overviews of all the hotels as well as instuctions on how to get to all the places you want to go. I would be dead without mine.

As for rooms, what I usually do is look in the lonely planet section for the town/island and go to where the most hotels/guesthouses are and go door to door until I see a place that looks cool.

Anyways, I came in here to say Cambodia sucks really bad, but the Angkor Wat is amazing and anyone in Thailand should make a 3 day trip to Siem Reap when they need to renew their visa or whatever. The rest of this place sucks donkey balls though.

edit

^^^

right on about the street vendors. when I first got here I was kinda picky but the last month I've been picking random stuff off the menu and most of it rules.

I also ate Indian Curry for the first time yesterday and I really want to get a time machine and beat my own ass for not eating this stuff years ago

That fried stuff on a stick is also popular in HK and Singapore. It has never done anything at all for me.

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

I don't really dig on the fried stuff on a stick but I eat almost all of my meals from street vendors. Usually a rice dish like chicken with chilis and basil or some type of noodles. I don't really mess with anything on a stick

A lot of my meals come from these little food carts. Its damn good food once you figure out what you like. Meatball carts are really good especially when you are really [censored] up at 4 am after some heavy drinking.

Of course you should get an apartment. 5 months in a hotel would cost you substantially more. Check out www.MrRoomFinder.com for general prices

Re: Ask Degen Anything About Living In Thailand

That place looks alright. The furniture and everything seems to be high quality.

Personally I dont like that area. I stayed there for 3 weeks when I was first in Thailand becuase its fun but after a while I felt like I needed to be away from the super high touristy areas.

I paid 25,000 baht for a 1 bedroom in Bangkok and I felt like a baller. I was on the 25th floor and my window was a great up close view of downtown business district. I was in a more 'hi-so' area and there were tons of nice restaurants and places to chill.

Looking out my other widow I got to watch the horse races for free every sunday. Damn, I miss my Bangkok life.

You find the best deals by just wandering around town. So maybe you stay in a hotel for a few weeks and then have a look and see what you can find. A few weeks will also be enough for you to decide what area you want to live in.

Oral sex is illegal in Singapore, but prostitution is not. I dont think anyone has actually been convicted.

Beats just to clarify what you are saying. You mean for 45k baht you get a 1 bedroom apartment with a giant pool and jacuzzi that is totally private. That seems hard to believe because most of the apartments I see advertised like that one are in 30 floor high rises and every place is adverised as having a pool.By private did you mean the apartment was private not the pool?I think the guy meant the pool and jacuzzi is private. That's mind blowing if you get a private pool like that with a 1 bedroom apt.I am not trying to be a dick here I am curious myself.I have been looking for a place to stay the 1st month but they way they advertise places is quite different than the u.s where they would say community pool and jacuzzi. Thanks

I think you guys need to use a little common sense. Each apartment is not going to have it's very own swimming pool and jacuzzi. Just look at the size of that pool.

I take it you have never seen a condo where each room has its own private pool.

Here is one in bangkok:
