I do not think he meant light skinned by genetic. I think he meant that overclass independent girls in thailand are much more likely to have light skin because they are more careful about being in the sun. It is a status thing.

In many countries it is the "working people" who is dark by the sun because they are out on the fields working in the sun. Thererfore the rich people do everything they can to stay out from the sun to show that they are rich.

Long time ago it was status question even in Sweden to be as light skinned as possible. Not by genetic, but by avoiding the sun offcourse.
