Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Hey listen first time thailand travellers and some others too sadly. Sorry to break the news to you but I have to because I feel sorry for the girls that you are making sad.

I PROMISE you, they want to be taken care of, it is all about that. It has NOTHING to do with you being so god damn hot.

Believe what you want, but please give them money even if you think they are going with you because of your looks or your awsome personality!

If you are outgoing and friendly, you will be fine. The girls are very approachable, especially if you share a smile first. Most of the girls I've met speak very little English, but it's really no problem to get around. You can talk about basic stuff like where you're from, what you like about Thailand... etc etc. It's too loud to really talk in a club anyways, so just impress the ladies with your farang dancing skills and you will have a good shot at leaving with them.
lol, if I showed this post to my friends that has been living in Thailand for some years, man they would get a good laugh.

I promise you, if you stay in Thailand for some time, you will also laugh when reading this post later.

Dont worry tho, you are not alone.

Omg raze you're so right. You can also meet some really awesome friendly down to earth "real girls" near bus stops, especially on sukhumvit. Their buses always seems to be running late but they're nice and there's so many of them! It's so crazy! Bad bus system I guess.

Hmmph,

I've always thought the bus system was one of Thailand's strongest features.

From what I have seen they think every falang man is handsome except the chocolate men.

Then again the only place I have ever talked to girls in Thailand is inside Nana Plaza so YMMV.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Ok, I'm thinking of coming to Thailand in June for three months with two friends. We all play poker for a living so we'd need a house with good internet but apart from that anywhere with good nightlife will do, and maybe beaches. Any ideas on where and how I should start looking for a house/apartment? Are there beaches within travelling distance of Bangkok, is it the place to be?

I'm feeling nice so I went thru the effort of finding a few post just a few pages back for you.

My basic Take on 3 popular Thai Island/Beach Areas

Pattaya

Pattaya:
Largest amount of party and plenty of girls.
Only 2 hours from BKK.
For Thailand the beaches are pretty BUSTO though.
Also, Pattaya is pretty sleazey compared to the others.

Phuket: Best beaches IMO.
Goodly amount of party/bars/clubs/girls.
Decent access to surrounding island points of interest (Phi Phi)
More expensive in general than Pattaya.

Samui: Like a much smaller version of Phuket in The Gulf of Thailand.
Close to Phan Naang (sp blows) Island for monthly Full Moon Party.

For much more detail on any of the three:

Pattaya: I believe poster "Thomas.t" lives there.

Phuket: A bunch of us live here.

Samui: Pokerspiv lives there and he seems happy to answer questions.
Mmerli's super awesome detailed explaination of different parts of Phuket Island

Another advantage to this is that as you're driving around you get to know Phuket better and maybe you will find an area that you really like and can search more intensively there.
Plan B is going through an agency like http://www.siamrealestate.com/ or walking into a real estate agency here. This will be more expensive but might be neccesary during high season, unless you're really patient and/or not picky about location and quality of house.

Basically all 2p2ers live on the south of the island with most in Kata/Rawai and a few people in Chalong/Phukettown

Where the "best" area is really depends. A rough description of some of the areas:

Patong:
Main tourist city with a ton of bars, clubs, girls, restaurants and people trying to hustle tourists. there is a big mall with a ton of shops, cinema etc. but except for a few massive degens basically no 2p2er have wanted to live in Patong for longer periods of time.

Kamala:
Small quiet place north of Patong with a decent beach and easy access to ever nicer beaches in Surin etc. Not many restaurants, bars or nightlife in general but easy access to Patong if you wanna degen it up. there's a big group of Danish grinders living there.

Karon:
Quite a few bars and restaurants but way way less than Patong. In high season there are a lot of tourists and therefore also quite a few annoying touts etc. The beach is decent and easy access to Kata/Rawai and not too far from Patong.

Kata:
This is where most 2p2ers live. It has a nice beach (well 2 actually) but it gets very crowded in high season. There is a decent selection of restaurants (it has the best Pad Thai restaurant in Phuket ). The nightlife consists of only bars but there are a decent selection of those.

Rawai/Nai Harn:
A more spread out and laidback kind of place. Really nice beach in Nai Harn (probably the nicest of all the bigger beaches down south). It also gets fairly crowded in high season but not nearly as bad as any of the above mentioned areas.
besides bars here and tehre there are a few decent clubs located in Rawai/Nai Harn + it has a Tesco Lotus/Mall kinda thing so shopping is easier than in Karon/Kata
Btw if you value a nice view from your house you will more than likely NOT be able to find it here (in Patong/Karon/Kata this is possible)

Chalong:
Cheaper area with almost no tourists even in high season and in close proximity to Central Festival mall which has a really nice Cinema, restaurants etc. and also close to a massive park (where weekly 2p2 sport games are being played)
Downside is no beach, no views and very limited nightlife but its not too far from Rawai/Nai Harn if you wanna go to the beach.

Phuket town:
Also cheaper area with basically not tourists. It's a relatively big city and there is lot of nightlife with a bunch of really nice clubs and bars. You will also find a ton of cheap restaurants and generally a nice athmosphere (ie you wont constantly have to say no to people trying to sell you crap). Downside is no beach and a bit of a drive to get to one.
Pokerspiv (lives on Samui) Rebuttalls/Opinion on Samui

On the other hand Samui is much less crowded than Phuket, and in off-season you often have the beach to yourself. That's a major plus for a lot of people.

http://images.google.com.au/images?q...N&hl=en&tab=wi

Cliff notes:

Phuket: Much bigger and more developed, more services available, more expensive, beaches with waves. Easier to get to both by air and overland.

Samui: Quieter, less expensive, no surf, less major shopping centres etc. Harder to get to since only 2 airlines fly there and there is no causeway to the Island so you have to take a ferry if not going by air.

I've been to Phuket 4-5 times and I much prefer Samui (particularly Lamai) because it's a small community and it's much easier to fit into the expat scene there.

It's also pretty good for the 20-something party scene since Samui is still pretty firmly on the backpacker "banana pancake trail", but Phuket really isn't since Lonely Planet long ago decided they were too cool/hardcore for Phuket. So if you are into meeting other young falangs who don't play poker then Samui/KPG is a better place to do it than Phuket.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

The weather in June is not that great (rains alot), so your best going to bangkok for the nightlife as it is far superior to anywhere else.

There are beaches fairly close to bangkok, but there not really that great when compared to samui/phuket. You can fly to Samui/Phuket in ~1 hour.

Rain can also affect internet connection so that would be another reason to choose bangkok as it has the most solid connections.

Your going to have to get a serviced apartment for a stay of 3 months.

Legend! High season is November to Mid-April, is that right? Do you know of anyone who has a spare room or three for rent in June-August? Longshot I know. Kata is sounding good to me...thanks for the help.

Whats the internet like in Kata? Do most of the serviced apartments have internet already set up, and how easy is it to get set up if not? And how easy is it to improve the connection if it is poor?

Properly setup Interwebz in Phuket are fine. In the 3 years Ie been here they have gone from mostly reliable to almost 100% provided you follow the basic steps of advice given by those with experience.

For short term, your best off buying an air card (~8KTHB + 800THB/mo) for your primary grind. This will allow you to hunt housing mostly unrelated to internetz. This will give you a much wider range of houses to hunt. You can use the house/apt interwebz as a backup/use for browse whilst relying on your aircard come grindtime.

Time to setup is not long. Landline based setups vary from 2days to 2 weeks to setup based on location and company.

Air card can be up and running as soon as you get it out of the shop.

Will one air card do for three people, or is it per person? And this can just be plugged into a laptop and it works fine? So what you are suggesting is that I fly out with no accommodation booked and then just house hunt? Will it be hard to find three rooms in Kata for three months starting June?

I believe you can buy a "router" aircard (bit more pricey) that can service the 3 of you in a common house.

Finding rooms/apt/house in Kata in June will NOT be that hard.

Our usual recco is book a few nights at this hotel: http://www.katabeachstudio.com/

An use the 1 st few days to hunt around on MBs for longer term accomodation.

In June (right in the middle of low season) availability is high and prices are lowest, so youd be coming at the perfect time to hunt and save.
