Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Where can I get my phone unlocked and how much should I pay?

Do Jay Mart (phone shop in bts) or do I have to go to MBK?

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Looked at few studio apartments in chiang mai the last two days, the apartments i was interested in were in the Hillside condos NW of moate, and Riverside SE of moate, can anyone help me decide between these two areas, the apartments were pretty similar, also down for beers in chiang mai whenever.

Westside of the city imo is the best area to stay (Nimmaheiman Rd, Huay Kaey Rd, Suthep Rd.) It's less touristy, cheaper, is close to the mountains and has the best bars/restaraunts.

If I didnt want to stay in this area then somewhere by the river close to Nawarat bridge, good view restaraunt the riverside restaraunt would also be pretty cool. That's on the East side of the city though and pretty far from the places I like to go.

Should be going out tonight. Pm me ur # to meetup

They are both decent area's but imo the north west is much better. All the 2p2ers live around this side and it's got better clubs/bars. I lived really close to the Riverside condo for 6 months and was really happy to move to the West side of town.

I'd guess there are exactly 0 foreigners living there and if there are they are part of some tourist business there. come check out phuket yourself, take a trip to phi phi and you'll understand my story better

what kind of stuff are we talking about?

yes, a lot of activities in phuket
Cool thanks for the info, I appreciate it...we've definitely ruled phi phi out for those reasons.

I guess we wouldn't be bringing that much stuff, just whatever is normal for a 3 month stay plus laptops. Can you fly into Phuket or do you have to get there another way? How easy is it to buy a decent sized monitor or get one shipped there?

yes phuket has an international airport

if you can't find a suitable monitor from phuket you can get some shops to order you one from bangkok. fellow 2+2'ers just ordered some 25" and 26" from bangkok just in the last 2 weeks

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

I have a mobile unlock question that no one has been able to answer for sure yet.

I'm in BKK and I have a Blackberry Curve that I used back in the states. I would like to use it here. The thing is, I had Verizon (huge mistake) as a service provider. Phones from Verizon don't use sim cards. There isn't even a slot to put one in the phone.

Anyone know if it is possible to use the phone?

The Phuket governor doesn't get it. Meters will solve nothing. They need to break the standover gangs so competition can come in.

yep it's just for show. Even with the really bad publicity that jetskis got it only really got half-solved. Imagine what it would take to actually solve the huge transportation problem. Too many influential people are making baht I guess

Hey man! This is an INTERNATIONAL TOURIST DESTINATION. Therefore it's ok to steal as much possible as quickly as possible.

The only fix I could imagine would be to install Jhonny as the Phuket Minister of Transportation.

I don't think I've been sick from food here once and I'm probably a more adventurous eater than most. Street food is totally fine, etc.

For full moon party you should get there 3-4 days before full moon night if you want to save money and get a decent room. Not too many scams really if you use common sense. When I first came to Thailand right after college I spent about $1k over the course of a month traveling all over, and thats including rooms (nothing baller obv). Its probably a little more expensive now but you can still have lots of fun on a budget.

eat: everything? i've been fairly adventurous here but have stayed away from anything in ball form. The one thing I look for at street carts and small restaruants is high turnover/people actually buying their food. Don't want to eat stuff thats been sitting out all day unrefridgerated and had flies all over it. common sense imo

drink bottled water vs tap(pretty sure regular tap water ****s with some people as its different than elsewhere).

scams- basically everything is a scam for tourists, ask around a couple places b4 booking/buying, haggle some with taxi/tuktuk drivers if there are others around, etc. The taxi based tours seem like total scams to me fwiw.

some tourists I talked with a few days ago were telling me how they were told to avoid all street food which is pretty lol imo. Isn't it part of the thailand experience to buy some meat on a stick and not know wtf it is your eating?

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Avoiding tap water is actually a good tip. I don't know for a fact that it will make you sick, but it does taste horrible.

As far as street food goes, anything is fair game. If you're used to perfectly clean, 5 star restaurants only, however, don't eat 100% street food from the beginning (unless you have a strong stomach). Eat one 'street' meal a day for a few days so your body can adjust to it. Soon you'll be able to handle it without any problems, which is good because some of the places on the street are the best food in BKK. Personally, I didn't have any problem just eating whatever I wanted from the beginning, but I have always had a strong stomach. If you're alike, feel free to try anything and everything. Most food is delicious!
