haven't done the 3 day hiking trips but went with some other university students on an "academic mission" beyond the tourist-sales oriented village and there are actually legit tribal villages out there.

not in the primitive technology sense but in the sense that there are peoples that have been generally nomadic over the last 100+ years from southern china and are living out there.

you can go anytime after you came into the country and probably best go before your permission of stay finishes. if there are holidays/weekend when that finishes they might not charge for overstay and still give the extension

is this location good? friend told me to book at the lower sukhumwit, is this close?

lower sukhumvit is the main tourist hell with silom/khao san afaik

but i guess if you want to pick up 1 working girl for every finger every day it's a good location.

to answer your questions:

good location? imo no but depends what you are looking for

is that close what your friend recommended: yes

I would listen to the bkk experts here though and not me

Might be getting a house with some other heads-up players and Thailand is one of the places we are thinking about.

Is it good from March-May in Phuket/Ko Phi Phi?
How possible is it to rent a house for 3 months on Ko Phi Phi?
Best method of getting our stuff there?
Is there a lot of active stuff to do in Phuket (scuba, rock-climbing...etc?)

That hotel is right in one of the red light districts. I wouldn't stay there but whatever floats your boat imo

I wouldn't recommend staying there, but it depends if you enjoy hanging around old white guys fawning over ugly hookers and ladyboys.

If it were me, I'd probably stay in Silom.

phi phi is not a place to stay long term. it is a very small island with handful of guesthouses and _ALL_ the stuff there is for tourists who come visit for 2hrs-few days and that's the max you want to stay there. How much are you guys paying for utilities?

I just got slugged with a 2300baht charged for 1 month electricity, which is nearly 3 times more than I paid last month, and about 3 times more than I ever paid in Melbourne where I was running twice as many electrical devices.

Seems kind of exorbitant given I use AC sparingly, use a laptop/22"monitor 6-10 hours a day and barely watch TV.

Water use came in at 500 baht. Is this normal?

Do you really think the Thais are paying thousands of baht a month for electricity? My bill is 600 baht for last month (though not much AC there since it's the cool season), and I'm still getting ripped off by paying almost double per unit (6 baht).

Edit: 500baht for water is also ridiculous.

Here in Pattaya you pay more per unit the more you use.

At some places where you pay electric fee to the apartment owner offcourse you often pay more than what the original bill says. Therefore people sometimes pay up to 8 baht per unit.

Most Thais don't use aircon, so their bill is significantly lower.

But yes, if you own your house and pay for electricity directly from the government, the price is 3 baht per unit.

i pay the government rate which i guess is around 3.5baht per unit and my bill has been around 2.2k in the last few months. we've got 2 computers and 2 monitors and use a lot of aircon so I guess it's ok price

i used to live at the end of soi 4 in a cheap apartment. not too bad, as long as you are close to skytrain. not so much to do in the area except the nightlife which is kind of low life orientated. if i wanted to live on lower sukhumvit i would at least move up to soi 12 or better even to 26 or so near emporium is pretty awsome.

Just got 3G aircard (sahm jee A-cod) and True sim. I can't understand the way the plan works since everything is in Thai. Is 3G free or is there no additional charge for 3G (ie you are still having wireless hours subtracted)? Do I need to sign a contract with True in order to get the 799 baht/month unlimited plan or can I prepay? Speed seems decent so far.

I"d have to know the exact soi to be sure but the general are in the circle on the website is fine.

15K for a 2BR is a decent deal esp since it seems to already have phone/interwebs.

I was a bit surprised to see something this low in rent on siamrealestate site.
