I'm gonna hijack this guy's questions with my own about Phuket.

I'm planning a trip sometime in April. My friend and I want to stay in a beach resort, but also be close to the main town area of Phuket (clubs, nightlife, etc...).

We're looking at a max budget of $150ish/per room/night. Any recommendations?

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

The "main town" of Phuket you are thinking of is called Patong Beach (or more specifically Bangla Road). So any resort in that area will be close enough to walk to it.

if please anyone can help me getting on a better trip in phuket!?
yeah iam not a fan of lower sukhomvit either basicly soi 1-15 is filth central. plenty of other places to stay unless you wanna be right on top of the action, stay closer to siam or higher up on sukhomvit, and it will not be as crazy.

i guess you should avoid patong or at least bangla in phuket since u didnt like it @ lower suk

yea most of the beaches where tourists stay are on the west side of phuket with patong, kata and karon being the busiest beaches.

it's not where the all nightlife is though. there are few discos south in nai harn and rawai and several clubs in phuket town which is on the east side of phuket. there are some resorts there too but i think you might not enjoy that as much as being on the main beaches atleast for the beginning.

I would probably stay around kata somewhere and then take trips to the many beaches near kata and later in the evening you could explore that nightlife options. kata is around same distance away from all 3 places where there are clubs that we have been to (nai harn/rawai, phuket town, patong) so you won't be too far away from anything if you go there.

I've never been to a hotel/resort here so can't recommend one. If you find some online I can atleast say if the location sucks but possibly not much more.

If you are coming in april I suggest you come around the thai new year

I liked ratchadamri as location. as long as you are not more than 10-15mins walk form bts (i guess you never are?) you are pretty close to anything atleast in my limited experience.

I've stayed at both silom and sukhumvit 2-3 times each and not planning to go (stay) back there either. probably going to stay in ratchadamri from now on whenever i visit.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

About the fighting training I can offer.

I am also up for training you guys in self deffence for baht instead of receiving poker coaching. I can do individual or group courses, intense short term, or a few days per week, long term if there is any intrest.

All I want is 500 baht per hour and then you can be as many as you want to share the cost. As long as I get 500 baht per hour, I do not care how many will be in the class.

I think coaching is fun and I have a bad economy, therefore the cheap price.

You can then tailor cut your training exactly how you want it. Like I said before, I can cover all about deffending against weapon attacks or threats, several opponents etc.

I can help you get the correct instincts for deffending yourselfe when getting attacked, (this is really important, since technichs are useless if you get stressed and forget about them when getting attacked) etc,.

I can also just do normal basic MMA och boxing with you if you would like that better.

Contact me if intrested.

Thomas

Sweet, I will check the hotels around Patang and Kata...How is Kammalla?

Visiting during the new year sounds like fun. We were planning on coming April 17th, but maybe we could push our trip up a week to coordinate with the new year.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

i would avoid kamala, just b/c it's also not in patong, but is further away from the south side of the island where there's a lot of cool stuff (and all the 2+2ers)

the best resorts are all in this area (kata+karon), I believe. i've only been to a few, and stayed in none, so i don't have the most educated opin... my roommate put his mom up in Movenpick in Karon, and it was sweet. high season i think rooms are closer to $300, but by then the price should have come back down some. I think rooms were about $150/night in July.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

I spent a few days researching hotels in Patong Beach last year. I ended up booking at the Millenium Resort.

The location is probably the best in Patong Beach. It is built right into the Jungceylon Mall, which has a bunch of bars, restaurants, shops, massage parlors, an outdoor beer garden with live music, and a good food court (food courts in Thailand not like in the US, they serve awesome, supercheap food). Bangla Road (the main nightlife area) is right next to one side of the Mall, and there is an outdoor market with food and shopping on the other side. The beach is about a ten minute walk away.

We rented a poolside cabana room with our own hot tub for $180/night, you could also rent a standard room for about $100/night. This was during low season.

If you're not trying to impress anyone, there are also a bunch of guesthouses in that area where you can get a room for less than $20/night. Nothing special, but clean and air-conditioned with internet access. Check hostelbookers.com.

I actually preferred other areas of Phuket when I visited (Patong was too touristy with tons of street hustlers), but only stayed in Patong and took daytrips to other parts of the island.

i don't know much about kamala. i've only driven through kamala to go up to surin/bang tao beach when we stayed there for couple of weeks on my first weeks here so i'll let someone who knows more to tell you about it.

I assume things there are a bit cheaper and it's quiteter than patong but ppl still want to stay there since it's close to patong i guess. location wise i think you are better off with staying south from patong and not north (kamala, surin, bang tao are all north while kata, karon, nai harn are south) but that's just imo

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Hey Phuketguys

I am a 30 year old pokerplayer from Holland. I have just arrived in Bangkok and will be staying in Thailand for about 6 months. The plan is to rent a house in Phuket, or better even, live in a nice big house with other pokerplayers.

At first I was going to come with a friend of mine but he had some financial problems. I decided to go anyway and it would be great if we could meet up in a couple of days.

So please leave a message with a phonenumber or email and hopefully see you soon!

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

my impression everytime i looked for rentals in phuket, theres more and cheaper big villas and apts around there than kata/karon though.
and iam pretty sure most of the biggest/ most expensive resorts are up north around bangtao/laguna and mai khao etc.

bangla road is so ugly: sex tourists, prostitutes, lady boys and annoying people who want to scam you everywhere

the beach in patong and the parties are nothing compared to the islands imo

they are basically the same place, lumpini park is perfect for running and is about 5 minutes walk from convent road.

I lived just off convent road for 6 months and loved it, easily my favourite area in bkk. Has tons of really nice restaurants and has a lot going on. It's primarily a business/expat area so you just don't get hassled at all for tuk tuks/massage/tailors etc.

I should be clear though, this is all SOUTH of silom road. as soon as you go to the north side of silom it gets seedy very quickly :P (patpong)

other people know alot more than me on the subject but there is 3g access over large parts of bkk. I don't know if they have the usb sticks yet but you can use your iphone if you have one.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

after walking around a good deal of bkk this past week if I lived here I would def want to live near lumpini park, very beautiful with plenty of park space and not crowded at all. definitely the best place I saw this week to get away from the craziness of bkk.

plus your walking distance to BTS and MRT if your near the park, definite plus imo

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

hey,

a friend and i (we are 21 and 23 from germany and play NL400+) are in Thailand now ...we were one week in Bangkok and now we are in Krabi and in 4 days we go to Phuket. Until now we stay in a hotel,
but we want to rent a house. In the Hotels we were they had internet (wifi), but its expensive(500baht per day per laptop) and very bad...its slow, often disconectes and sometimes
we have hours of no internet.

Now we want to rent a House or a Appartment (2 rooms) in Phuket. Of course its the most important thing for us to have internet that works well. And of course it would be fine if the house/appartment
is in agood location.
It should not cost more than 1000$ per month.

Do you have any experience or tips for us were we can find a house/apparment like that in phuket?

greetings,
JABOOOOO
