Yes some of us have. I tend to prefer Issan peoples , in general to the fake hiso BKK types.

I'm currently in Udon Thani and enjoying it.. prices are so cheap.. 10baht for a thai coffee, 30-50baht for a thai meal..
I spent the new years with my GF in her home near Nong Khai, and went and got my Visa extension yesterday at the UT immigration office.. a breeze. Not many other young falangs here..but if your running with friends or need a change of pace from Phuket/Bangkok/Chiang Mai.. I recommend to stop over here..
Basiclly, if you get out of BKK or Phuket prices drop almost everywhere in Thailand.
Nong Khai seemed really cool. Stayed there 1 night several times.

I know a lot of people use the Thai Embassy in Laos these days for Visas, and recommend UT for a few days. I'm staying near the bus station, as I took the bus up here.. I'm a nit lately..trying to find the cheapest ways in LOS (land of smiles for you noobs). I've spent the last 2 1/2 months in Phuket, and it's a nice break to be out of there..so many non-Thais and prices are high right now. Bangkok for a few days this weekend on my travels back south, but thought I'd mention a place I've not seen much feedback on.
Yep Nong Khai is cool.

I'd also say I've been using a DTAC pay as you go service on an Nokia E72 for a modem..and no problem wherever I stay for modem access...
I did stay in a barn, and **** in a squat toilet for 5 days (with no TP) during New Years. But 400 baht bought the whole party beer, and we had a good time singing Karaoke, etc.. I was at my GF's "mama's" house. But was fed well, and rent was free..( I kickbacked some baht for the good nature of it). And saw some 'real' Thailand for a change.
Yep did the squat shtter multiple times. But, compared to conditions in the field in the military, didn't phase me.

I'd also like to comment to all the 'playas' who like playing mental games with the bar girls.. get off your computers for a week and see where they come from, and how they live. It was a welcome change to the norm in Phuket, etc.. But I do miss the great beaches and daily swims in the oceans..
Yes, attitudes of the "I have hiso Thai friends who hae Hiso families" can get quite boring.
The beaches/mountains are what kept me in Phuket for years now.

BTW..there are casinos rumored in the works in the North area
I can't say it any more clearly than to STAY THE **** AWAY FROM ANY LAO/CAMBODIA/THAI CASINOS UP THERE.

Best luck to all in 2010!! Let's keep the poker players in Thailand connected and welcome all the noobs to the LOS in the best way possible.
