I'd just like to chime in on the hookers / non-hookers issue.

I lived in Thailand for 6 months in 2008 during an internship and returned for 4 months in summer 2009 (am heading back soon to work professionally).

I'm a bit shocked at the number of people that seem to have lived there longer but are saying that there are essentially only hookers or super conservative virgins. While there are certainly tons of full-time / part-time hookers everywhere you go, and it's true that you will meet "traditional / conservative" Thai girls that won't be willing to go the distance with you, there are PLENTY of girls in between. Some people will be able to meet them / build relationships, and some won't - I think there are a couple factors that are important (no particular order):

1) length of your stay: if you want a "real" relationship, you pretty much have to be living there for a significant period (6-8 months+) or at least on some schedule where you are there for 3 months and gone for 3 months or something like that. That's not to say you can't find a girl that will just mess around with you for a shorter period, but it's harder to get that going. Thai girls aren't stupid: if you say in your first conversation that you're "heading out next week / month" it's not going to happen.

2) where you are looking: it's not gonna happen at a go go bar / beer bar. if there is ever a question of payment involved, you messed up. it might happen at a tourist / hi-so club (examples: former Santika in bkk, seduction in hkt), if you catch some normal thai girls there (i.e. not freelancers) and are smart enough to be able to figure out the difference as the night goes on. If you want to meet a normal thai girl in the nightlife scene, go to the clubs where they go with their friends. Be prepared to be one of the only, if not the only, foreigner there. Examples: Thong Lor / Ekkamai area in BKK. Other than that, university areas (plenty in BKK), coffee shops, malls, etc. are good places. Just don't be a creeper - have a reason to be there. Don't just aimlessly wander a uni campus approaching women.

3) Thai language ability: the more the better, and even a bit of the basics will help you a LOT. A lot of the normal Thai girls that would be open to a "normal" relationship (as we would call it) will speak some amount of English that they learned in school. This could be 50 words or fluent. Many speak more than they will admit or know because they hardly use it. (Some won't speak enough to go anywhere with. Too bad.) My advice, if you're serious: learn some. Get a tape, take a class, meet some Thai people where you live, whatever. Thai people, girls especially, will love it if you can use it - even if it's just a little - and expect you to make tons of mistakes.

4) your age: Yes, this matters. I don't mean to discriminate but if you're an older guy looking to get a great relationship going with a normal Thai girl, good luck. Would a 19-27 year old woman in your country date a 40-60 year old man? Maybe sometimes, but it just doesn't happen as much. You have less of a chance in Thailand. (Hooker scene is totally different. Sometimes relationships come out of that, good for them. They usually don't last.) Consider the age thing the same as you might in your country - generally look for people in the same age range.

5) your appearance: don't be a slob. Again, same as your home country - dress like you're going out to meet women. Be reasonably groomed.

6) network! Maintain friendships with the people you meet, and go out with them. Thai people are very very social - go to eat with your new friends, and you will be constantly introduced to new people. Go out with them on weekends.

In general, the scene isn't too different from what there likely is in your home country. You will have to look through the veneer of the pay-for-pleasure scene, and yes, you will meet conservative women. However, as university students and twenty-somethings go, especially in Bangkok, there are PLENTY of "normal" girls that would be open to having a relationship with a foreigner / farang if that guy is the right guy.

Hopefully that sheds some light on the scene. I felt the need to share because I think a lot of people (on this board and in general) have that misconception about Thai women - that they are hookers or super conservative. It just isn't true, but you have to be serious with them and yourself.

Side note: these girls are as silly, silly hot as the rest of them. IMO hotter because they haven't sold their body to 50 guys before you.

Really? Because in my home country it's simple as hell to find a one-night stand with a girl who isn't a hooker in any bar or club on any given night. From your own description that doesn't happen often in Thailand.

So the scene is very much different.

i stopped reading about here as i never met a girl that wasnt ready to be shipped by someone. Hiso, loso, soso or agogo. only 1 girl but she was of royal lineage which meant you had to tie the knot before exploring the spot. im sure you said some good stuff but sorry it was hella long.

Thai girls in a nutshell well...

Basically a thai girl is like an animal in heat.

Some may not agree but this is my opinion/experience having lived here over a year now. You can have whatever you want, whenever you want as theres just so many women. period! there are good girls, bad girls pretty much theres to many girls! This is good. All the thai men stay in the villages n stuff to farm and since the women cant farm they go to BkK to find work whether its at a gogo or a factory or a bank. That and theres the other ones that just live out here anyway=alot of women.

bottom line thai girls are like animals in heat. to them sex is casual and it shows in there dialect as there is words like gik(**** buddy) and 2nd wife. i mean they actually have a word for that which reflects something about there culture.

i probably could have said that a little clearer but am tired from drinking many bottles last night so ill leave it at that.
