my post was about getting thai driver's license. rutang posted about changing a bike in thai's name to his own name when he is here only on a tourist visa.

my post about getting the thai license

rutang's post about changing the bike's ownership

You should probably get some thai to help you translate when you go buy the bike. even some bargirl with ok english is good enough, just make sure the bike doesn't end up in her name

why bother? if you're set on getting a 9-5 and a regular life, why give yourself a taste of the liberty you'll be missing for the rest of your days? I'd suggest working hard, saving for retirement, then come over here at about age 60, and then instead of knowing your whole, miserable, slave-like existence what life could be like if you were awesome enough to grab it by the horns... you can just wish you had moved here as a young man when you're old and bitter about everything anyway.

cheers for that guys, although maybe its not going to work for me this trip then, i'm renting 1 month in lamai then 5 months in mae nam, so i dont think i'll get a lease for that as no real contract just month to month, so no alien residence right?

how about i just buy it and pay the old bill a few hundred if i get pulled!?! or get girl i "trust" to buy and she puts me on insurance, renting 6 months gonna cost 21,000 and the bikes only 10,000 to buy. so even if she stitches me and keeps it at the end i still save 11,000! a bar owner (ex B.G.) ive been chatting with seemed to think it was possible, but i didnt push her on details as even though shes fun and friendly, i wouldnt trust her futher than i could throw her, and shes no waif.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Would appreciate any advise/suggestions regarding finding a nice place to stay in BKK November 18th thru 24th.

I've been in BKK dozens of times, but I always stay on/near Khao San Road. This trip I'm interested in finding somewhere else to stay, but it needs to be convenient to where I need to be during the day.

I go to BKK to buy silver jewelry, so each day I work for 10:00AM to 6PM. I'll prob. spend two days buying on Khao San, 2-3 days buying a shops along New Road (the area where the Oriental & Shangri La Hotels are located), and one day at some shops near Zen World Trade Center. Sundays I usually go to the Weekend Market.

I usually pay about around 500-800 baht/night for a nice (by Khao San standards . . .) room w/ aircon, TV, hotwater shower, etc.

Any websites or names you can give me for hotels / guesthouses in my price range would be greatly appreciated!

Also, where IYO is the most centrally located area for me to stay?

Finally, my nights are free, would def. be interested in meeting any 2+2ers livng in BKK.

IDK what kind of bike you figure to score for 10k baht, but whatever it is, it won't be close to as good as a bike you pay 21k to rent for six months.

brand new these bikes go for 40-60k and a good bike will be around 20-35k used, with only cheaper models in the lower part of that range

it was nothing special but reasonable condition little twist and go, its prob 8 years old, from a guy running one of those little bike repair places. he had a step through for 5,000 this was a bit tatty though.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

In your opinion:

What are the three best Thai restaurants in Bangkok?

What are the three best seafood restaurants in Bangkok?

What are the three best sushi restaurats in Bangkok?

I am going to be in Bangkok Nov. 19th-24th. I'll be working all day but want to eat the best food that Bangkok has to offer at night. Any & all advice and suggestions greatly appreciated, anyone want to join me send PM.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

I just bought my CDMA EC226 this morning in chiang mai, and I definitely recommend it, thanks to the posters who suggested this to me!

No problem for poker (on pacific/888 network which says a lot!) and i'm downloading stuff on usenet at 200~300 ko/s.

--

Oh and for poster above try the semi open seafood restaurant directly under chong nonsi BTS station, it's not fancy, but they sure know how to cook!

His prices are accurate.

A honda wave rents for about 3k baht per month (150-200 per day if you pay day rate), but you can pick one up easily for 10k baht, which is what I did in Samui.

It's definitely the way to go if you are staying 2 months or more. As said you can sell it when you leave for the same amount assuming its still in working order.

I got mine registered in the name of some pub owner's wife. They aren't going anywhere and keep it at their house for me while I'm overseas.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

2+2 is a poker-related site + this is a forum about Thailand = there must be some home games going on in Thailand!

I'm going to be in Bangkok next week for business. I'll be busy during the day buying jewelry, but at night I plan on eating great food, drinking cold beer, and if possible, playing some poker.

Can anyone help me find an open home game??

Honda Wave is a manual and a lot lower powered than a step/airblade/click.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

My honda wave is a 100 cc automatic clutch, I think they make them in about 15 different version FWIW.

I bought it in a private sale from a farang who used to rent them (Jax Bikes in lamai for any lamai people - he also used to own the Cheeky Monkey bar). 10k baht is a pretty good price but 10-15k is not uncommon to get one depending on age and condition.

Thais are notorious for overvaluing cash on the spot. Offer them a lump sum payment and they'll often take it even if they'd get more if they were being paid monthly. Expats in Thailand use this to their advantage all the time. Thai wants 10k per month for a room? Offer them 60k upfront for a year and you probably have a deal.

I thought this was the case. I'll be renting a condo for a period of 3-6 months, and have no problem if all the baht could be upfront, if i could avoid hoping they give me the 2 months security deposit back within the time frame of my visa expiring. My concern with doing this however, and not month-month, is what sort of action could be taken, if the landlord just took all the baht upfront then kicked u out. the last thing i want to do is deal w/ thai police.

Believe it or not landlords have reputations to protect, especially when a large amount of their business comes from Farangs. The worst I've ever heard happen is overcharging for electricity, which is pretty common.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Motorcycles.

Where to buy decent motorcycles? I'm talking about 400cc+ bikes. I'm not interested in scooters. I saw redbaronbkk.com and tpmotorcycle.com and they seem very expensive - asking prices are about 2x or more than it costs in the US. They do not list Chinese knockoffs bikes on their sites...

What do I need to legally buy? In terms of paperwork...

I am thinking of flying in for 6 weeks or so to ride around Thailand/Vietnam/Laos/etc and selling the bike back.

Airport charges 50 baht for their taxi service which the driver charges you, plus highway fees. If he hit sukhumvit and drove directly down it during traffic rather than taking side streets or whatever then this might not even be overcharging.

I suppose three out of five isn't bad but you are not so knowledgeable about Australia if you think there is a nationwide closing time. Shop and bar closing times vary from state to state, vary according to what day of the week it is, and may vary between localities within a state. For example, bars in Brisbane are currently obliged to close at 5am. There is no set closing time in NSW and some bars are open 24 hours, though local authorities force bars to close at midnight in many suburban areas. Early shop closing times are still imposed in Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia. The other states have deregulated.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

So far Bangkok's 2+2 members haven't been too forthcoming w/ answers (see my posts above) . . . perhaps you can help me w/ this one:

Years ago you could buy most any kind of pill at a pharmacy--uppers, downers, whatever. Seems like the last few times I've been in Bangkok I'll I can get is Valium.

Does anyone know of a pharmacist in Bangkok who's willing to sell something stronger?

Any 2+2ers who want to get together for beer, food, poker, whatever, send me a PM.
