The transferring will be done from your american account so yes you need to make sure you can transfer to foreign bank accounts, which i assume all can do. Its just a question of how (online functionality or not) and the cost. Most normal banks will give you a pretty decent fx but its probably worth checking it out with a smaller transfer before doing a big one.
I transfer from my swe bank account to kasikorn for 150 baht (charged in swe) and it takes 3-4 days and fx is ok
Another way would be via moneybookers (neteller wont work in thailand) but dont really see the point of that since the fees would def be higher
