1) http://news.samuiexpress.net/clients/aumpai/aumpai.html

Has a reliable, 4mbit wireless connection. However, if you are going there I recommend telling the owner that internet is important to you, so then he can put you in an apartment where you will get the strongest signal (usually 3rd floor).

As for great hotels? Typically resort-style hotels won't offer decent internet in their rooms. Since they don't cater to business travellers. And there isn't much business travel in Samui.

2) You need a special CDMA aircard, which you can buy from CAT internet in Nathon, on Samui.

However, as far as I know, Samui does not get EV-DO speeds, you will only get a 150k/s connection using CDMA on Samui.

Question for some of you more experienced travelers. I want to try and make some money on my trip to offset the cost of the trip. I've been two times before. I bought some nice purses and wallets and had no problem bringing them back into the US and made a little profit selling them. I was seached on my second trip back. They didn't really trip about any of the stuff I brought back. My question is, how much stuff are you able to bring back? Is there a number, like say 10 purses, where they say that is too much? Thanks in advance for any input.

Take a look at US customs website, they will spell it out there.

Generally though the worst thing that will happen if you take a lot back is that you will have to pay import duties on their estimated value.

Skype is something like $.03/minute to call the US or free if whoever you're talking to is also using it. This is probably your best option unless you need to receive calls.

coming back to phuket pretty soon to stay awhile this time, couple questions:

how easy/possible is it for an american to open a bank account?
i have health insurance with international coverage, is it worth it to keep it? or is it cheap just to go to the doctor hospital in an emergency, etc

One of the cell companies here called True has calls back to the US from your cell phone for like 2 baht (5-6 cents) a minute. Might have been a promotion but I def think you can get better rates than $.28 per minute from one of the cell carriers here.

Yeh the best rates to call back home are through InterSim I believe. Thats part of the TrueMove network or something. You can get them in any 7/11

It is a good idea to keep the travel insurance. I mean I went to one of the proper hospitals here and I was only there for 24 hours for some minor tests and the bill came out 30k. Another 2p2er was in a minor accident and had to get some surgery on his hand. I think it was like 200+k
