Tons of shopping, in the streets and in the malls. Lots of temples all over the city. Doi suthep mountain has lots to do and that is right at the foot of the city. They have 3 parks that I can think of in the city centre. There is a really big lake about 20 mins drive away which has really cool restaurants all around it and you can swim/do some water sports. I think their are like 30 different waterfalls close by, up in the mountains. They have a zoo (pretty terrible though). And they have a Molly Malones.
i was pretty much sold on moving to cm for a few months before, now it's gaurunteed. have you been there?

OK now I feel bad. I got worried when you got all excited and checked on the internet to confirm and it's actually an O'mally's I'd not been in yet and for some reason thought it was a Molly's every time I drove past

Are O'mallys any good?

The internet is fine in Samui. It's a bit shakier in Koh Lanta, but I was able to grind at a resort there without too many problems.

Dream Hotel, Grand President and President Solitaire all have good connections.

How much per night on average to stay at dream hotel in Bangkok or one of the other recommended hotels?

Do rooms regularly become available in poker houses?

Lessu,

As if speeding around in the rain trying to avoid oncoming trucks and navigating hairpin turns wasn't enough, now you have to jump 10ft holes too?

5000 baht a night isn't that cheap if you ask me. That's about half of what I pay for a month but to each their own I suppose.

I would be vary wary of any place that offers wireless internet only. My experience with wireless in Samui is that 95% of wireless connections aren't even good enough to check email with, let alone play poker.

At the very least I would want to test the connection before putting any money down.

If you want to play poker I recommend this place:

http://news.samuiexpress.net/clients/aumpai/aumpai.html
http://www.cafe--europa.com/aumpai_luxury.html

Its 20k baht for a month. It's not on the beach but it's 5 minutes walk away.
I have tested the connection here and they have a very good 4mbit maxnet connection powering their wireless. An apartment on the top floor will get Western-quality connections. The owner is American educated and if you tell him you need good internet access he'll put you somewhere where the wireless is strong.

I spent weeks searching around the Island for accommodation with internet access good enough to play poker. This is one of the very few places I found.

Sooo, who's the BKK expert? I'm returning there next month and need tips on where to stay. I'm looking at places like Citadines/Legacy/Adelphi Grande/Aspen Suites/etc, so in the 30-50k range. I only need two things: a decent gym in the building and good eating options, so nice room service and plenty of other restaurants within easy access. Close to a park for the occasional jog would be a plus.

Anyone have a good one in mind?

Stay out of Citadines on Suk 16, it sucks

I have had good experiences on Marcopolo on Suk Soi2. I think they have a pretty decent rate at the moment.

I'm Here ! BKK that is.

But would be looking to set up / join a Poker House in Samui or Phuket

I only intend to be in BKK for 5 days or so then was going to head South and start finding somewhere to live.

I mainly play MTTs so good power/connection is even more paramount

Is Samui reliable enough for MTTs ? Not really according to Spiv's recent post

Anyone else have experience of Samui ?

Any feedback appreciated,

Thanks

I'll go to CM in october for 6 months and I would like to know if you found some ATM with a large possibility of cash-out in one time (to reduce fix fees from my bank) ?

Usually, how much are you able to get in common ATMs ?

just get cdma if you are here long term. if not, just drive around looking for houses and ask if they have telephone line and/or adsl. tt&t is what you want like you know already.

why do you want to stay in patong?

I had a regular internet connection with TOT 2Mbits, and it was ok for 4tabling.
I used this for 6 months.

I think 20K THB max is the norm.
The best way to diminish the fees is to open an account in a local bank and wire money to it.

CDMA works in Samui but I don't think you get EV-DO speeds, you only get about 160kps or so.

Where did you stay? Was it a hard line connection or wireless?

Even a TOT hardline is generally ok, the real problem is that most places that offer wireless don't have amplifiers or anything, so you get a very weak wireless signal. It's the standard Thai "mai pen rai" thing. Their customer want wireless, so they get it. The fact that their wireless is useless 90% of the time is irrelevant.

If you have a place with a hard connection to a LAN, then you should be fine. But not many hotels/apartments offer this, it's usually up to you to connect it yourself.

My connection in my apartment last time was unusable. I tried GPRS/EDGE but it would disconnect every 10 minutes or so. Eventually I just went to the Outback Bar in Lamai and used his LAN to play there every day(TOT 2mbit). I could 9 table sitngos on it, very rarely timed out. I usually stopped playing when the rain came, in case of blackouts.

Fine for me because I know the owner and his daughter makes the view worthwhile, but not everyone will be able to do this.

GPRS/EDGE is good if you just want email/web access though, it's basically free and don't need any special hardware, just a mobile phone which you probably have already.

If you are planning on using wireless in Thailand, it might be a good idea to look into getting a wireless boosting antenna. You can get a 9db gain antenna for around $150 and they will turn 1 or 2 bars into 5 bars. The only problem then is carrying it around with you.
