Re: Ask us about Thailand!

PokerSpiv,

Phuket's internet is fine. TT&T premier package is only 1090baht a month and that is 2/1M adsl. they had like 3 weeks of problems at the end of June/early July but before and after that it has worked great (1 year sample).

I could get faster one too but i dont need.

I understand if you dont like people commenting about pattaya who have never been there but if you say phuket's internet is not good then you are wrong

if you know what you should have you will be more than fine. I have been fine with TT&T adsl and i have CDMA as backup. connects in 2 secs and is actually faster with download speeds than my 2M adsl but disconnects sometimes when downloading.

both are great for grinding though

if you have TT&T indy package or TOT adsl you might have (a lot of) problems

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

i understand what your saying about the thread offering advice to prospective travelers so i will offer my objective 2 cents on this topic but before i do i just have to say......in the end Bkk FtW imO

i also have to take a moment to lol at "most sun-cooked part of the issan" as thats just **** funny....

far as pattaya goes,

i feel like both sides of the coin are right far as it being cool, yet Grimy at the same time.

i wouldn't really recommend living there though as i feel that if someone were staying there they would lose perception of reality and kind of just go nuts pissing on a bunch of issan girls but thats aside from the point.

While there is predominantly a bunch of "pro" girls, same as in phuket, ill add that the times i've been to pattaya on holiday from bkk i have met decent non pro chicks that work at A.central world, B.there on holiday herself, C. a student at thai disco Noir (have in pattaya same as bkk) way way far away from the falang tourist area. So there is "non pro" women and nightlife but you have to dig a little.

One major benefit is everyone speaks english, i think pokerspiv has the right idea far as Jomtien being a decent place as its not dirty like pattaya and well obv not as nice as phuket, but does have a beach, it is clean, kind of quiet and a short 10 minute trip to pattaya if you want to have some crazy times.
there is also some stuff to see and do out there...a big golden buddha on top of big hill, if you want to ride a motorbike without surely dying like in bkk well you can rent 200 baht a day, also have speedboats, wave runners, bungy jumping, crocodile farm, elephants, unicorns, midgets and more girls from issan living there than probably issan itself.

just to cover both ends most of pattaya does have the dirty, old man falang smell to it. i sometimes read the http://www.pattayadailynews.com simply for entertainment purposes to laugh at how crazy and illogical human beings can actually be. than again i do the same thing with the bangkokpost so whatever.

and for the record im pretty maow right now. kaaaaaaaaap

But posting lists claiming that Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui are better places for internet poker is a little silly when you take into consideration that 90% of accommodation in those places doesn't have a suitable internet connection for online poker.

lol it's not like my list was definitive. a guy asked the best places to play poker and i gave my opinion. i never considered pattaya because i never thought anyone would want to live there and i think > 95% of the posters here feel the same way. anyway, you've made your point about pattaya being suitable for grinding so people should go check that place out too.

and the internet in in chaing mai, phuket and samui is perfectly fine for playing poker.

Hey guys, how are the flights between Asian countries, say from Bangkok to Manila? I did a quick check and it was $801US which seemed really high, can you get cheaper flights than that once you are there?

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Flights to other asian countries are generally ridiculously cheap.

However this doesn't apply to last minute fares on full-service airlines, which is the only posssible way you could be charged $800 for BKK-Manila.

It's more like $100, if you book in advance.

Discount airlines like Air Asia and Tiger Airlines fly all over the place for very low prices, sometimes you might have to take a flight with a layover rather than a direct flight to get the lowest price though.

Re: Thailand chatter thread

Hey guys how r u all doing?
I'm new here but have been reading these forums for a couple of weeks, just arrived in BKK 3 days ago, staying till august 29th, together with my friend rogier (and robbie for a couple of days), yesterday we went out together with sami and his friends, it was pretty funny but still not awesome or nything. Tonight nobody is going out so I decided to make a 2+2 account instead and post on this forum.

Anyway perhaps I will see u guys around. grtz.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

regarding renting places on a 12 month contract
as I understand standard practice is to pay 2 months of rent in deposit
1. who is holding this? the landlord or a third party?
2. anyone having difficulty getting this back? what is normal given the place is in order obviously?
3. is this normally done in cash when you move in or bank transfer?
4. anyone in the Waterford Diamond building around Phrom Phong who can give some general review about the building and area?

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

yeah or make sure you don't pay bills (internet, eletricity or whatever) for x months so it equals the ammount of the deposit you get screwed out of. Someone in here (I dont want to mention any (green) names) did that to great success

Landlord

Landlords in the whole world see it as free cash they can screw you out of, always depends on your luck.

Usually both options available.

Had a look at it a couple months ago, seemed like a decent building, area usual upper sukhumvit area. If you aren't renting from an owner but through one of the bigger agencies which seem to rent out unsold units directly for the developer you might eventually stand a better chance getting your deposit back.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Rent from falangs if at all possible.

They typically won't screw over other falangs because they have to answer to the rest of the expat community. Thais on the other hand only care what other thais think, and most Thais consider any white face fair game.

Typically though I wouldn't leave a deposit any bigger than a month's electric bill (4-5000 baht) with a thai, because you will never see it again.

What you could do instead is just offer to pay a larger amount of rent upfront. To most Thais 50,000 baht now is much more valuable than 100,000 baht in 6 months time, you can get some really good deals by offering large lump sums of cash.

hmm this is interesting and something i didn't consider, mostly staying in hotels for the better part of 2 months.

-u can just say no i am not paying any sort of security deposit, but here is 3 months rent up front? anyone have any experience w/ this?

i have been back in N.Y. for a while, but obv Thailand is too sick not to come back to. I'll be living in bkk for 1 year minimum starting jan. or feb. next year. Not sure how i wanna to so it yet. either apartment alone or condo/house w/ other 2+2s but feel free to pm me anyone looking to stay long term, early next year.

also when i look at websites, it seems that the ladphrao area seems the be the cheapest prices. I have stayed and seen a lot of areas in bkk and the further u get away from lower suk the better. I don't have to live right on top of suk, but don't wanna be surrounded by third world places either, w/ no access to bts or mrt. anyone have experience living near ladphrao?

The Waterford diamond have to be one of the worst big condo tower in sukhumvit, its pretty old and bad looking. Any Sansiri or Noble buildings are better than that anyway and they are the average ones out there.

Re: Ask us about Thailand!

Renting from falangs usually means you're paying falang prices though. But it could end up being cheaper if you don't get your deposit back from Thais. If only I had some kind of skillset that would let me compare the expected value of different situations...
